all that $$$ going straight to The Man

Due to some unfortunate circumstances with OSAP, I had to pay for school on my own last year. It was really painful because every paycheck I got (till the end of the school) went straight to my tuition. This year (15/16), I would like to get assistance from OSAP. I have just finished submitting my application.

Would OSAP not give me money if my estimated financial amounts are too high?

They are high because, when I estimated my amounts, I assumed I would be working full-time till the end of the summer. (So far, I have been working full-time since May.) If something changes.. like maybe I get fired tomorrow and can’t find a job for the rest of the summer.. how would they know?

    ———————————————

    hey there,

that sucks, man. don’t you love how the UofT Corporation Inc. continues to demand money in exchange for its services? despicable.

i’m assuming you used this aid estimator to see how much funding (if any) you’ll likely receive based on your current circumstance. (if you didn’t use that…you may want to try it).

if the estimator says you’re not eligible for funding, then that is probably an accurate reflection of what actual OSAP will say. however, just because OSAP says no dice, doesn’t mean you’re out of luck in terms of funding. you can always talk about your situation with your registrar’s office.

every college has some amount of emergency grant funding for their students, in case you suddenly lose a job, gain an unexpected expense, or your trust fund runs out because you bought one too many yachts (again. Dammit, Wilbert Charles Samuel the Third, when will you learn?).

also, students whose costs aren’t completely covered by OSAP for whatever reason can receive extra assistance from UTAPS.

finally, if you were to suddenly lose your job or have some other financial calamity, you can and should definitely report that to OSAP by altering your application online. that way, OSAP will know your situation and might bump up your funding. which is always nice.

sassing is truly an important pastime

Okay I feel like this is a stupid question that I’ll probably find the answer to right after I send this email, but I’m having a mild panic attack about this, so asking around can’t hurt. Okay, so I’m at UTM and I just dropped a Y course, which brought my course load down from 70% for this semester to 50%, so I’m now considered a part time student. I’m not on OSAP, but I did get 30% off my tuition, I know you have to inform OSAP when your course load changes, or it can effect your funding in the following years. I downloaded and filled out the Financial Aid Change Form, I’m just not sure where I’m suppose to submit it or address it to. The Office of Registrar? The Financial Aid Office at the downtown campus? I’m just so vexed as to what to put on the front of the envelope.

Thanks so much for your help. And if I do manage to figure this out on my own than sorry for wasting your time.

    ———————————————

    hey there,

not at all! i actually don’t consider this a waste of time. even when people ask me which college is the best college, EVEN THEN i don’t consider it a waste of time. i find sassing them is time well spent.

anyway, yes, that form is produced by the registrar’s office, and page 36 of this presentation says that any changes to your status relating to OSAP should be reported to them, so i think it’s safe to say the form should be going to the registrar.

    best,

  • OSAP,  part-time

but i FEEL like i’m here all the time

    Hey Aska,

I am currently taking 4 courses, one full year and three half year courses, for a total of 2.5 FCEs. I would like to drop one of the half year courses but if I have only 2 FCEs will I become a part-time student? I am on OSAP so will this affect that as well?

I wouldn’t mind being a part-time student but only for this semester- I want to take 3 courses in the summer so if I do end up going for part time, how difficult would it be to do that then change back to full time in May?

    Thank you!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

if i could have one wish in all my life, it would be that people told me what campus they were on before they asked a question. alas, there seems to be no genie in sight for me.

in any case, on all three campuses, you need to be taking at least 3.0 FCEs in the fall/winter terms to be full-time (it’s articulated slightly differently on each campus, but that’s what it boils down to).

so if you’re in 2.5 credits, then you’re already a part-time student. that may affect your OSAP, and i would recommend talking to the financial counsellor at your local registrar’s office about it.

applying for OSAP and registering for courses in the summer term is a completely separate process from registration and OSAP in fall/winter, so if you’re a part-time student now, that shouldn’t at all affect any future semesters. all you have to do to be full-time in the summer is sign up for at least 1.5 FCEs.

    money on TAP

    Hi,

I recently stumbled upon an email from OSAP (November) reminding me to update my income on the application. I was awarded a 2014-2015 UTAPS grant ($4000+) from the school with a letter clearly stating that an OSAP report is not needed. However, the section under Income Received During Study Period on the OSAP application says, “Do not report any award, bursary, and/or needs-based scholarship received from a public Ontario college or university if the college/university informs you in writing that they will report the award to OSAP directly. If you have not received notification in writing from your school, then you must report this income”.

From this point, I’m a bit confused as the letter about the UTAPS grant states that an OSAP report is not needed, yet the OSAP application indicates I must report the award/grant if the school has not done so. The UTAPS grant has essentially paid off the rest of my tuition for this year as my account balance is at $0.00. I am receiving the rest of my OSAP funding (also $4000+) in 2nd semester that I was supposed to use to pay off my tuition, which will now be used to excessively pay for upcoming textbooks. I do not want to be overfunded and forced to repay more than I have to after graduation. Thus, I have not updated my income yet, what should I do?

Should I report the UTAPS grant? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

if the university told you that you don’t need to report UTAPS on your OSAP, then that’s because the school has reported/will report it for you. seems to me that OSAP statement is also telling you NOT to report the award, since you were “informed in writing that [the university] will report to OSAP directly.”

from what i can tell, it’s all up to the school now; they said they would report it, which means it’s out of your hands. sit back and relax. have a drink. enjoy the wonderful weather we’ve been having.

however, if you want to be absolutely certain (which i would recommend), you can always call enrolment services and double-check.

    have a rad rest-of-the-afternoon!

gimme an O gimme an S gimme an A…

Hey there, when can I start to apply for 2015-2016 OSAP?

    ???????????????

    hey there,

i can’t find any documentation about this because enrolment services’ information (no disrespect, guys) is a teensy bit out of date, but my SECRET SOURCES here at aska HQ tell me that it’s typically not until may.

so don’t start freaking out about it just yet – you’ve still got some time.

    takin’ care of business, everyday…

    Dear askastudent,

Google and the terrible UofT website have been able to answer the majority of my questions but unfortunately not these ones. That is, however, where you come in.

    – Will my OSAP cover the first payment on my residence or will I have to take care of business myself?

    – Whilst applying for Victoria College I checked off my interest in residence. If I (And I will so this is a non-issue) fail to get into Vic will I have to confirm my interest in residence at all the other colleges I may end up in? I like to deal with things as pre-emptively as possible, to prevent future issues and so if I could deal with this now it would be best.

Thank you very much for your time wise askastudent. Have an excellent, fun filled evening.

    Sincerely,
    The Muscles Champ

    ???????????????

    hey there Muscles Champ,

*huffs* how dare you call the uoft website TERRIBLE? terrible, with its circuitous, illogical tangents and constantly moving web pages? nonsense! it’s not terrible, it’s?magical.

    1) it all depends. apply for OSAP, and when they release an estimate of how much aid you’re eligible for (that’s fancy talk for how much money you’re likely to get), they’ll tell you the dates that each instalment will be released.

then you just have to figure out when your residence fees are due, and do the math. and then you can, as you said,?take?care of business, whatever the case may be.

    2) nahh.

basically how it works is that, if you’re interested in residence, you do everything through a myres application. you’ll have to indicate your initial interest in residence through myres by march 31st.

then, once you’ve been accepted to uoft and given your college placement, you’ll log into myres again. at that point, myres will recognize which college you’re a part of, and they’ll only list residence options that are available to you. so if you get into vic, you might?be given vic residence and chestnut (which is not affiliated with any college), for example.

i hope you also have an excellent, fun filled evening, Muscles Champ. and thanks for the kind wishes.

    cheers,

#1 enrolment services fan right here

Hi, I wish to be not named, but anyways, my question is ,

I had 2 credits in Fall(which is now) but dropped it to 1 credit and transferred 0.5 credit to next semester, Would I be on OSAP probation since I’m currently doing 1 credit instead of 1.5(due to 60% course load rules)? ?I would be a part-time student for the fall term, but then I’d be a full time student in Winter, would I still receive my second installment?

    ???????????????

    hey there,

i don’t know if you’d go on probation, but since you’ll be below the 60% of a?full course load?required by OSAP, you might run into some problems. they may reassess you next semester and then require you to pay back some money – or maybe not. they may or put you on probation. i’m not sure.

that’s why?i would talk to enrolment services about it as soon as possible. whatever the case may be, they can solve the problem before it becomes an actual problem with OSAP. they can advise you or adjust your status, or whatever other sorcery it is that happens?in those offices.

    best of luck,

    aska

P.S. why does everyone tell me not to reveal their name? what do you think this is, the Enquirer? c’mon people. i don’t even reveal my OWN name.

  • OSAP

    i want my money!

does aska know how long it takes for an osap probation decision to be made after a letter indicating proof of academic progress is submitted to enrolment services? got put on probation cuz didn’t complete 4.0 credits cuz transferred campuses and credits don’t count towards program usually so i dropped courses to save money/time. it shouldn’t be a big deal i think/hope but i would like my funding ASAP.

    ???????????????

    hey there,

this time of year, enrolment services has a pretty fast turnaround time for this sort of thing. i would say that anything bordering on 2 weeks is longer than typical right now.

if it is coming close to two weeks since you submitted your letter, just contact enrolment services again and ask them when they expect the decision to be made.

you can also ask them whether the fact that you changed campuses is having any effect on the wait time, while you’re at it (it may, but i can’t say for certain – it’s worth it to ask).

    xoxo, good luck,

    aska

registering without payment: a last resort

    Hi!
So the OSAP deadline if you want your fees deferred was June 30th, and I?applied by then, but there was a mistake in one of the digits of my SIN
card so I had to redo the application, which happened in July 5th.

I’m worried that my fees won’t be deferred by August 18th, which is the?deadline for fee deferral. What do you think? Will my app be processed in?time? I’ve handed in everything else, they are still pending my income info?for verification from CRA & UofT has to send in my admission information.

I’m going into first year, btw!

Thanks so much, I could really use an answer on this.

    ???????????????

    hey there,

WOW, that is a really annoying reason for having to redo your application. my sympathies.

as far as i know, you’re able to defer your payment as soon as soon as you receive an estimate from OSAP (“[i]f you have applied for OSAP and have been assessed by OSAP as receiving financial aid for the coming school year, you may defer your fees until your OSAP arrives”).

once you receive that estimate, i would go online right away and try to defer your payment. that may happen before you get verification from CRA and uoft, so keep an eye on the estimate first and foremost.

however, if it’s coming up to the august 19th (19th, not 18th!) deadline and you still haven’t gotten an estimate, you can go to enrolment services to fill out a form that confirms that you’ve applied for OSAP, and that will allow you to get a registered status while you wait for the estimate (the form will look something like this).

good luck and go speedily (literally, you don’t wanna miss that deadline)!

    OSAP knows all your secrets

    Hey there!

I am in a bit of a pickle. I have not yet paid off my last year’s tuition and there is a financial hold on my account on rosi. The thing is…I plan on paying the whole thing back by the end of the summer (I am working and making money thankfully). The real problem is that I was on osap probation and I had to argue my marks with a professor and the marks on rosi might change…but will osap be able to see my marks if there is a hold on my transcript? I have also switched schools so I will no longer be coming back to utm.

    Please let me know,

    thanks in advance.

    ???????????????

    hey there,

the university puts a hold on your financial account in order to penalize students, not the ontario government (politics is a punishment unto itself, amirite?). so the fact that you can’t access your transcript has no effect on the reports that the university makes to OSAP.

i don’t know when exactly they make reports, but OSAP does have access to your marks regardless of any holds. if your marks are in the process of changing, either improving or getting worse, then that will be reported to OSAP. i’m just not sure when.

i’d recommend that you talk either to a financial aid advisor at utm or the equivalent office at your new school so you can figure out the exact timeline of all this and what to do from here on out!

    best,

    aska

dead and alive lines for OSAP

    hey,

When were/are we supposed to apply for osap if we’re in second year?

    ???????????????

    hey there,

i like how you said “were/are” like you’re already resigned to the fact you may have missed your chance. well, at least you’re prepared for failure. i admire that in a university student – you’re sure to go far.

there’s no hard-and-fast deadline to apply. OSAP says their deadline is 60 days before the end of the study period for full-time students.?however, depending on if you need to defer your fees or need the money for some other reason, you should probably apply as soon as possible.

really, to be certain that it would be processed by the deadline to defer?(August 19th?for Fall/Winter), you should have started in late May/early June, just because some students have to take additional/unforeseen steps in their application that may take some time to complete. also, you never know how long it’s gonna take for OSAP to process your stuff.

if you apply now, you’ll still probably be okay to defer, but you might not actually get the money from them for a while after that, so if you need OSAP for things other than school fees (rent/groceries/leprechaun taxes etc.), you may want to come up with a plan B.

tldr; go online and apply right away.

    cheers,

    aska

tfw the government doesn’t make any sense anymore :((

    Hello!

I need to know whether or not OSAP checks your credit score/file every year you apply. I know they do when you initially apply but I need to know whether they do one every single year you apply or just the first time. My ID was stolen last summer and now my credit score is completely screwed but its not my fault! So i need to know whether I should alert OSAP of the fact that my credit score is bad because of fraud or whether it will be okay and I will still be able to receive OSAP despite my credit score being terrible.

    THANK YOU!

    ???????????????

    hey there,

ugh, i dread OSAP questions. how can such an important organization?have such a crap website? and why does there have to be?the whole circus of looking on the OSAP website to find info, and then having it refer you to your school’s financial aid office, then the financial aid office referring you back to OSAP…and on and on??

buttt i’ll answer your question because you used a lot of exclamation marks and seem so enthusiastic about this whole thing.

i went online and looked at OSAP’s definition of a credit check. they say that?”if you?re older than 22 and have never received an?OSAP?student loan the government will conduct a?credit check?to review your credit history.”

the way?i read that is, “if you’ve never received OSAP before, we’ll do a credit check,” i.e. if you have received it, they won’t do one. also, according to this helpful ryerson site?(no longer active), students who have already received OSAP in previous year don’t get credit checks.

so i wanna say you’re safe, BUT since i couldn’t find any up-to-date information on a UofT page, if you wanted to make absolutely sure (’cause credit’s like, pretty serious business or something i don’t know i’m not an adult), it may be a good idea to call enrolment services and have them confirm it for you.

also, i’m sorry that person stole your ID, that’s really horrible. i hope they buy something with it and then choke on the receipt.

    best,

    aska

the school’s got your back on this one

hey aska! I got an OSAP question for you! so I applied for summer OSAP and currently my status says ‘school must confirm enrolment’ the fine print says “Your school must confirm enrolment no later than 30 days before the end of your study period”. I only took classes for the first semester meaning the last day of my study period is June 27th?. what will happen if the school confirms my enrolment to late?

    ???????????????

    hey there dude/dudette/non-gender-specific dude-person,

if you applied for OSAP correctly and on time, the school should already have confirmed your enrolment to OSAP.?it’s possible OSAP are being slow pokes and not showing this on your OSAP account yet, but that’s all them. just this once, there’s nothing you have to do to help along the process.

if you really want to make sure about the status of your OSAP app*, you can definitely contact?enrolment services to double-check that everything’s going smooth as peanut butter**, but i don’t see any reason to panic?just yet.

    cheers,
