aska: a comment from a student who was bitter about the level of care received through our counseling treatment services. rage on sister

hi, i’ve been having trouble adjusting to university life (ie. making friends, school, etc..) and have been experiencing some depression. I went to counselling services however was told that I would be put on a waiting list approximately 4 weeks before i would get recontacted and get some real help. The way they talked to me made it sound more like a business rather than they’re trying to help me out. they said i only have 20 sessions meaning “hint hint, don’t come here more than that cause that’s all your fees pay” This is extremely frustrating because it takes a while before people have the courage to go in for help, yet when they do, they’re put on hold and treated like garbage. I think things need to be changed because if i feel like this, i wonder how students with larger problems feel. anyways i felt worse coming out of counselling services than i did going in. thanks i wanted to vent and inform.

to avoid this limit, make an appointment with your family doctor and see if they can help you out with a good recomendation of a new psychiatrist. if you don’t like this doctor, for any reason, then be sure to get another one, again through your family MD. you need to feel comfortable before you can open up with somebody. another option, if you need help beyond the 20 treatments, then go to in-services at the clark institute @ college and huron. they’ll help you out.
depression can be tricky, especially when it’s compounded by the stress of class and school, and starting again in a new social setting. i really hope everything works out for you. if there’s anything we can do to help you out with the causes of your depression please feel free to let us know. we’re here to help.
cheers,
