alcohol,  commerce,  st. mike's

the secret password is ‘cold tea’

Hi askastudent…
Been cruising your website for the past half hour and couple questions popped up:
1) Exactly how hard is UfT Commerce? I haven’t got my acceptance letter yet, but I can’t decide between art degree with a business major or just the hardcore business. Call me a hippie but I’m really not all that interested in money.
2) Is St. Mike’s a college of Catholic girls gone wild, finally free from the iron grip of their parents? If so, unfortunately, I think it’s my destiny.
3) Lastly (a stupid question but considering my background, see above) how should one get alcohol underage? Am I just going to have to continue sucking up to (not literally) 19 year olds for favours?
Thanks a milllion…

hey hey. thanks for persuing the web site. here are the answers to your questions (as best as i can do when it involves catholicism and underage undergrads):
1) to maintain your stay in the commerce program, you’ll need to have competitive marks. the unique thing about commerce is, unlike our hopeless future in arts and science, commerce grads actually get recruited by big companies right outta university. which means they look at your undergrad marks, and your ability to tie a windsor knot. be warned.
oh and many people manage to do double majors in commerce and another associated artsie program. my friend wilson is doing a double major in cinema studies and commerce which to me, seems like the smartest move of all.
2) contrary to popular belief, st mikes isn’t girls gone wild: rosary edition. i mean sure, there’s gotta be some girls who flee from their repressed upbringing (probably from woodbridge) by over-indulging in smirnoff ice and the all-male residence next door. but like any college, you’ll get a whole mix of personas. fun fact: st. mikes is also most applicant’s last choice, which means that st. mikes also has the most…stupid people? and in a residence environment, it’s the dumb people that are the most fun. and easiest to manipulate – which means you can watch your first choice TV shows in the common room. but don’t worry – st. mikes is not all philistines and chapel fanatics. it’s just…people.
3) as for drinking underage…well, off the record, askastudent can list a few places known for serving anyone/anything (including inantimate objects) the sauce, but you may have to email me at askastudent.innis@utoronto.ca for specific details. (tell me something that proves your undergrad student cred too. askastudent doesn’t want the feds involved.) but as usual, get an older sibling to give you an old driver’s liscence, bring along sharpie pens to make fake marks on your palm, and wear low-cut shirts to impress the sleazy brunny bouncers. or just pre-drink. most bars are lame anyways.
and keep in mind that no self-respecting 19 year old is going to buy underagers drinks. and the kind that will aren’t worth the sexual favors.
cheers, askastudent

I’m from SMC (St Mikes) and its a really great college full of school spirit and great programs such as christianity and culture and book and media studies, as well as the new concurrent education program at u of t! Yes, it is Catholic based so a lot of student groups are focused on social justice – such as our out of the cold program..but there are so many diverse groups as well…we have a really cool newspaper. Most of the students at St Mikes are European though, this is true…
A lot of great parties are organised by SMC…our graffiti party and the cowboy/school girl party! There are many awesome things about SMC and Im glad to be part of this college. I dont understand why ppl feel as though it isnt a good choice.
