coo coo for chemistry!

Hey Aska,

So, I did horribly on my first chem midterm for chm138 and decided that I would drop it before the drop date, I am now thinking of taking it in the summer. Do you think that is a good idea? Would it be harder? Easier in the summer? I know the work load will be a lot more intense as things will move by fast, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle it. Or do you suggest that I take chm138 next semester and chm139 in the summer? Please help!

Thanks!

Hey hey!

To be completely honest, I think it’ll be harder if you try to take CHM138 in the summer. I don’t have anything concrete I can link you to, but judging by your situation, if you had trouble during the normal-paced version, an accelerated course might not be the greatest idea.

But if CHM138 is offered next semester, I strongly recommend taking it and then basing whether or not you want to take CHM139 in the summer off of that experience.

Cheers!

I would actually advise the former. Do it in the summer if you are taking it ALONE. Having it twice as fast when you are taking nothing else is exactly like taking 2 courses in a normal paced semester. And if you take 2 in the summer, it is equivalent to taking 4 in the Fall/Winter. That is still easier than taking it as a 5 course load (and the students in the summer are less strong competition). As long as you do your work in the summer, which is equivalent to 2/4 courses, you should do better. I wouldn’t take a very difficult course with 4 other courses; I’d leave a lot of time for it for the summer, so I can focus and actually spend time on it.

    Good luck.

However, beware, as it is a prerequisite. If you drop in it in the summer, either you take it in the second half of the summer (if it is offered) or you risk not taking your second year BCH210H1 requirement as it has CHM138H1 as its prerequisite.

Chemistry is chemistry. What does your time allow you is my question. Anyway, getting it out of the way should not be the approach. Aska points that out, and you realize that summer classes will be “intense”. Do it the old fashion way, plow through it in the reg sem. Just saying.
