decoding UofT: is it all just a british colony?

Do you know what it means when U of T grads identify themselves as “9T0”, “5T2”, etc. How is this converted into their year of graduation?

And…are all U of T buildings named in homage to their Oxford University counterparts in Britain? Eg. Trinity, New, etc…

that is UofT’s clever way of being clever. 9T2 is 92, but with a T for toronto in the middle. i’d like to know what this year’s will look like. 0T2? that looks pretty stupid.

the colleges are actually named after famous people who at one time had something to do with the university, but are dead now. here is a brief run down of the naming of the colleges:

innis > after harold innis, communications pioneer. he questioned the validity of freedom of speech, fitting right into the attitude of overworked undergrad professors.

woodsworth > after james shaver woodsworth, minister and pacifist. he was at one time related to william wordsworth, english poet, but immigration screwed up when his grandfather was getting off of the boat in halifax.

new > after j. alfred new, a conservative british lord who attempted to establish feudalism in upper canada.

trinity > after the holy trinity of course. trin’s property is actually a triangle with a small representation of the father son and holy ghost at each corner.

victoria > after julie andrews, who played the transvestite in the hit musical victor/victoria.

university > after sir francis university, inventor of tuition. nah, i am just kidding. the truth is that the admin at uc has a history of being really boring and unoriginal and that was the only name the could come up with.

st. michael’s > after the archeangel, patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and sickness. during the second world war, a bunch of UofT students become paratroopers and died, so the catholics named their college in their honour.

so you see, it really has nothing to do with oxford.

cheers,
