{"id":14603,"date":"2015-06-02T12:06:19","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T16:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=14603"},"modified":"2019-08-01T13:12:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T17:12:54","slug":"i-just-want-to-keep-bees-with-other-alumni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=14603","title":{"rendered":"i just want to keep bees with other alumni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>last year, i tried to give uoft&#8217;s graduating class of 2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=9046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most solid advice that i could<\/a>, before they were dropped kicked out of con hall and into the so-called &#8220;real world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>i still stand by that advice (especially the one about dr. phil). this year, though, instead of dwelling on all the horrible and scary-sounding stuff that awaits us all beyond graduation &#8211; poverty, under- or unemployment, unstable\/temporary jobs, etc. &#8211; i want to remind graduates of some of the NICE THINGS about being a graduate of uoft.<\/p>\n<p>(all of the things i&#8217;m about to mention are provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Alumni and Advancement<\/a>. take a poke around their website if you&#8217;d like to learn more.)<\/p>\n<h3>1. career help<\/h3>\n<p>so, you&#8217;ve graduated &#8211; you&#8217;re alone, you&#8217;re afraid, and you&#8217;re without a job. the familiar doom and gloom of the job market in the post-2008 recession that we&#8217;ve all heard before.<\/p>\n<p>FORTUNATELY FOR YOU, little grad, the office of a&amp;a offers a number of career services for young professionals. for up to 2 years after graduation, alumni have <a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.utoronto.ca\/services\/career-services\/career-centre-for-recent-grads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full access to their faculty\/campus career centre<\/a> for free. which is nice, because as a jobless person, you probably don&#8217;t have a lot of money that you can spend on services to help you find a job.<\/p>\n<p>but if you DO happen to have a little money kicking around, you also have access to a large number of <a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.utoronto.ca\/services\/career-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career coaching services<\/a> at a discounted price.<\/p>\n<p>if you&#8217;d like to do a bit of shmoozing &#8211; i mean, networking &#8211; why not attend one of Alumni&#8217;s Shaker events? they&#8217;re free, and they take place at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.utoronto.ca\/events\/shaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hip urban hotspots.<\/a>&#8221; no more stuffy rooms in UC for you. now you&#8217;re FANCY.<\/p>\n<h3>2. the library<\/h3>\n<p>you don&#8217;t want to be one of those plebs who can&#8217;t get to the stacks at robarts, do you? after all, you&#8217;re really going to need easy access to that Welsh literary anthology from 1834 when you&#8217;re working 40 hours a week.<\/p>\n<p>for just $22.60, you can buy an <a href=\"http:\/\/my.alumni.utoronto.ca\/s\/731\/index_clean.aspx?gid=1&amp;pgid=797&amp;sid=731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alumni ID card<\/a>, which grants you access to the stacks until THE END OF TIME. alternatively, you can pay $70\/week for an <a href=\"https:\/\/onesearch.library.utoronto.ca\/alumni-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alumni reader card<\/a> and you&#8217;ll be able to loan stuff from the library, too.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Continuing Studies<\/h3>\n<p>working can be a bit mind-numbing, especially if you&#8217;re used to the pace and rhythm of a university course. yes, i know that sounds ridiculous now, as you cheer and celebrate (read: drink copiously) the end of your time at school.<\/p>\n<p>however, formal education can be a tough habit to break. besides, learning is a lot more fun when you don&#8217;t have a $30k degree hanging on the line.<\/p>\n<p>to ease that transition from school to work, why not sign up for some courses at continuing education students graduating this year get a <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.utoronto.ca\/how-to-register\/alumni-benefit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$750 credit to spend on one continuing education course<\/a>. take a course in anything from business &amp; professional studies to creative writing.<\/p>\n<h3>4. faculty club<\/h3>\n<p>ever wanted to feel like an overprivileged white man living in victorian england? well NOW YOU CAN, with your very own membership to the faculty club.<\/p>\n<p>the faculty club is a great place to meet people who were successful in a previous era, sit down in fancy chairs in fancy rooms, attend events with other fancy people, learn valuable skills through varied <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facultyclub.utoronto.ca\/Membership\/Etiquette-Seminars.aspx#How_to_Succeed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">etiquette seminars<\/a>, and &#8211; this part is my personal favourite &#8211; be part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facultyclub.utoronto.ca\/About-The-Club\/Faculty_Club_Beekeeping_Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beekeeping club<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>if you&#8217;re a recent grad, your <a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.utoronto.ca\/services\/faculty-club\/special-offer-for-recent-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first six months of membership are free, and the next 2.5 years of membership are half-price<\/a>. which is actually a pretty great deal.<\/p>\n<p>congratulations, grads, and good luck out there!<\/p>\n<p>aska<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>last year, i tried to give uoft&#8217;s graduating class of 2014 the most solid advice that i could, before they were dropped kicked out of con hall and into the so-called &#8220;real world.&#8221; i still stand by that advice (especially the one about dr. phil). this year, though, instead of dwelling on all the horrible and scary-sounding stuff that awaits us all beyond graduation &#8211; poverty, under- or unemployment, unstable\/temporary jobs, etc. &#8211; i want to remind graduates of some of the NICE THINGS about being a graduate of uoft.
