{"id":21780,"date":"2018-07-26T14:57:26","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T18:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=21780"},"modified":"2019-07-18T14:13:01","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T18:13:01","slug":"is-it-philosophical-to-be-ambivalent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=21780","title":{"rendered":"is it philosophical to be ambivalent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, I&#8217;m going into Life Sci this fall and I was wondering if Philosophy will be a heavy elective to take in my first year?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>hi!<\/p>\n<p>oh god, i hope i&#8217;m not too late with this one, since<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.utoronto.ca\/current\/course\/timetable\/1819_fw\/index_html\"> first year course selection is TODAY!!!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/4VU8y7Uxgv39tJtRWe\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"scared wreck-it ralph GIF by Walt Disney Studios\" width=\"282\" height=\"118\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m really bad at answering these kinds of questions, &#8216;cuz i think that how &#8220;heavy&#8221; a course is is totally subjective. like, i&#8217;m reeeeeeealllllllly bad at math, so even a &#8220;bird&#8221; math course would feel like a huge feat to me.<\/p>\n<p>in my very humble opinion, the most important part of deciding whether or not a course is a good elective is whether or not you&#8217;re interested. personal anecdote: when i was a wee first year, i took a science course as an elective that i wasn&#8217;t all that interested in (i just wanted to fill up my timetable and i thought fulfilling my <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.calendar.utoronto.ca\/degree-requirements-hba-hbsc-bcom#Breadth%20Requirement\">breadth requirements<\/a> would be a good idea). unfortunately, because i had no interest whatsoever in the subject material, i ended up doing really badly in the course. womp womp.<\/p>\n<p>so, i can&#8217;t really say whether or not philosophy would be too &#8220;heavy,&#8221; that is really a judgement call that only you can make. think hard, potential future philosopher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/a5viI92PAF89q\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"interesting batman GIF\" width=\"270\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p>good luck!<\/p>\n<p>xoxo,<\/p>\n<p>aska<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, I&#8217;m going into Life Sci this fall and I was wondering if Philosophy will be a heavy elective to take in my first year?
