hi! i\u2019m a grade 12 student who\u2019s just applied to UTSG social sciences. I\u2019m interested in psych research as a career but more on the arts side. i know that psych is only offered as a life science and is really science heavy at u of t, but i read on their website that social sciences and humanities students can also declare a psych major if they have the pre reqs to do so.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so i\u2019m wondering, exactly how much wiggle room would i have with customising my courses? im kind of worried about having to take a lot of hardcore science courses. its really not my vibe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

also, would i have to double major? because they don\u2019t offer a ba in psychology do they?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

i’m super excited to answer this one because it\u2019s something i already knew a bit about!! in bygone days i was also considering psychology, and as a not very sciency person myself, was a bit disheartened to see that uoft only offered a science degree for psych.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

you are correct that <\/span>utsg only offers psychology as a science program<\/span><\/a>. HOWEVER, the fact that you applied to the social science admission category <\/span>does not <\/span>mean that you can\u2019t do a psychology program. within arts and science, <\/span>your admission category doesn\u2019t restrict you when it comes to which classes<\/span><\/a> and programs you can take.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the only thing you\u2019d have to watch out for is the <\/span>prerequisites for the program<\/span><\/a>. i\u2019m gonna assume here that you\u2019re an ontario student. for the psych major, you have to have a passing grade in grade 12 calculus and vectors and grade 12 biology.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now as for how sciency the program <\/span>actually <\/span><\/i>is… well, <\/span>let\u2019s take a look at the required courses<\/span><\/a>. the only one that jumps out at me as truly math or science-based is <\/span>statistics I<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

now, you COULD double major, or you couldn\u2019t. see, the way programs work at uoft is a little wacky. if you wanna do psych, <\/span>your options would essentially be<\/span><\/a>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
