Hi! I am a grade 12 student who has applied for <\/span>lifescience<\/span>\u00a0at all 3 campuses. I am scared that my final chemistry grade will end\u00a0<\/span>up<\/span>\u00a0low 70s. I will be able to get my admission average to mid to high 80s but should\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span> be worried like I am scared that they will reject me for having a low grade in a science.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hi!\u00a0<\/span>I’m<\/span>\u00a0currently a grade 11 student in an Ontario high school, and I just\u00a0<\/span>recieved<\/span>\u00a0my final marks for semester 1. They range around 70-89, which I was really\u00a0<\/span>bumbed<\/span>\u00a0about. There were many\u00a0<\/span>ups and downs<\/span>\u00a0this semester.\u00a0<\/span>I’ve<\/span>\u00a0heard that grade 11 marks matter for\u00a0<\/span>university, and<\/span>\u00a0will look at my grades.\u00a0<\/span>I’ve<\/span>\u00a0always been curious to\u00a0<\/span>appy<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>uoft<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>espcially<\/span>\u00a0social sciences. i’ve decided to answer both of your questions in the same post because, guys, have you seen how many admissions questions i’ve gotten lately? i <\/span>even\u00a0added\u00a0a new section to the\u00a0faq\u00a0page for\u00a0you guys<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0now\u00a0<\/span>of course<\/span><\/i>\u00a0i\u00a0love getting your\u00a0questions\u00a0but it might save YOU some time to check out that\u00a0faq.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ok with that out of the way,\u00a0i’m\u00a0gonna\u00a0do a bit of an infodump.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

low\u00a0chem\u00a0grade?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

at\u00a0<\/span>utsc<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>utm<\/span><\/a>\u00a0life sci admissions are\u00a0generally high\u00a070s and low\u00a0to mid\u00a080s,\u00a0respectively, but\u00a0as you mentioned, yes,\u00a0<\/span>the admission average\u00a0for life sci\u00a0at utsg\u00a0is mid-high 80s.\u00a0<\/span><\/a>however chem is NOT a required course for the admission stream.\u00a0this means\u00a0that if\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0your lowest\u00a0mark\u00a0(or\u00a0second-lowest, if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0taking 8 grade 12 courses), it\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be included\u00a0in your top 6 average that\u00a0uoft\u00a0looks at.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now you may ask,\u00a0aska, how is chem not\u00a0required\u00a0for life sci?\u00a0and the answer is…\u00a0well, it depends.\u00a0<\/span>some\u00a0upper-year\u00a0programs of study\u00a0do require you to have taken high school chem to enroll<\/span><\/a>, but they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0require you to have gotten a specific grade in the class, just that you passed it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

wait\u00a0wait\u00a0wait, so does grade 11\u00a0reallllly\u00a0matter?<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

worry not my friend, while\u00a0uoft\u00a0DOES look at grade 11 marks, what you get in grade 12 will matter more. 70-89 is a pretty wide range and since the admission average\u00a0for soc sci at\u00a0uoft\u2019s\u00a0main campus is\u00a0<\/span>mid-high 80s<\/span><\/a>, you\u2019re probably already in a good spot! i also have to mention that uoft has two other campuses: <\/span>utsc (located in scarborough) recommends around mid 70s for soc sci programs<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>utm\u00a0(in\u00a0mississauga)\u00a0asks for an overall average of 75 and min 70 in english.<\/span><\/a> totally apply to all three! and yes, I’m a bit traitorous for this, but… you should definitely have a shot at soc sci programs at other unis too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
