This is my first time stumbling onto\u00a0askastudent, and\u00a0I’ve\u00a0been able to gather a lot more info on\u00a0uni, which\u00a0thanks\u00a0sm!! \ud83d\ude1b\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And for my question(s), I was wondering if it matters that I\u00a0fail\u00a0a course?\u00a0I’m\u00a0in grade 11, and I\u00a0actually have\u00a05 credits right now (that is if I\u00a0don’t\u00a0fail one of those courses ?). The subject itself\u00a0isn’t\u00a0important to me since\u00a0it’s\u00a0a yearbook course, and\u00a0I’m\u00a0planning\u00a0on going\u00a0into the social sciences or politics, preferably in St. George (or other campuses\u00a0I’m\u00a0still debating ?). But I also know\u00a0UofT\u00a0(and I’m\u00a0gonna\u00a0guess other unis as well) looks at grade 11 courses, which is\u00a0kinda\u00a0freaking me out \ud83d\ude41 I do have a 86% average right now (without the course I’m failing since there hasn’t been a grade out for it yet…. ?),\u00a0I’m\u00a0doing decent-ish\u00a0in my courses,\u00a0esp\u00a0w my current mental health and constant missing school for counselling or other issues ?.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also wanted to know if universities would care that\u00a0there’s\u00a0a sudden boost in my grades for gr12 (hypothetically, if\u00a0I could even manage that ?). I’m only doing pretty poorly now because of my current family situation and from missing a bunch of school, I obviously plan on doing much better in gr12 and I was planning on taking Virtual school for the\u00a0maths\u00a0because I work better at my own pace, but I’m worried\u00a0UofT\u00a0would think I’m cheating and not that I’m actually able to lock in or something like that because my 85% in math is suddenly 90% or more (My mom keeps telling me this so I’m\u00a0kinda\u00a0scared ?) and a lot of people keep telling me a lot of different things like grade 11 doesn’t matter only gr12 does, or that gr11 really matters. And then I get told if I fail a course, or get my average under 85% I can’t get into any “good” programs, so I really just don’t know what to believe, and I can’t exactly trust everything Reddit says all the time ? nooooow\u00a0first things first: failing a course, especially in grade 11, does not spell doom for your admission chances.\u00a0<\/span>for social sciences,\u00a0uoft\u00a0will be looking closest at your top\u00a0six grade 12 u\/m courses (assuming\u00a0ontario?), including\u00a0english<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0yes, they will look at your grade 11 marks, but failing a non-required course when you have an otherwise good record\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be the end of the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

also, side note…. yearbook course? maybe i’m just dumb, but i’ve never heard of yearbook-making as an actual, for-credit class. crazy times we live in, huh…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

as for virtual school, that\u2019s totally fine as long as it\u2019s accredited (i’m assuming you\u2019re referring to ovs here) or through your school board<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0and a jump from 85ish to 90ish is absolutely not a problem, in fact the admissions people often really like to see improvement!\u00a0a jump of that much\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0be suspicious.\u00a0breathe easy, you will not end up on\u00a0uoft\u2019s\u00a0most wanted\u00a0list just for showing improvement.\u00a0uoft\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0even HAVE a\u00a0most wanted list… well, as far as\u00a0i\u00a0know.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so, being an unfortunately chronic reddit user,\u00a0i\u00a0too was on r\/ontariograde12s at your age and saw all the people absolutely losing it when they got, like, an 83% in a course.\u00a0don’t\u00a0let them convince you that\u00a0an 86% average is\u00a0somehow bad.\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0still within consideration for most\u00a0utsg\u00a0programs, is safe for a lot of\u00a0utm\/utsc\u00a0programs, and\u00a0is\u00a0absolutely enough\u00a0to get into \u201cgood\u201d programs all over\u00a0ontario.\u00a0you just\u00a0gotta\u00a0remember that most of the people you see on those forums\u00a0are equally clueless to how unis\u00a0actually work, OR, if\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0in\u00a0uni, they may only be aware of their specific circumstances. plus,\u00a0i\u00a0hate\u00a0to say it, but\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a lot of keeners on there.\u00a0don’t\u00a0feel bad\u00a0comparing yourself\u00a0to the worrywarts with 98%\u00a0averages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
