I’ve\u00a0been accepted into the UTSC Arts & Science co-op program; and while initially planning an intended major,\u00a0I’ve\u00a0recently been exploring other options more thoroughly and found one that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0really interested in at UTSG, specifically the Architectural Studies program at the Daniels Faculty. I came across your webpage and posts while searching for information\u00a0regarding\u00a0the internal transfer process and first-year course planning, and I wanted to ask a few\u00a0general questions\u00a0from a student perspective:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How realistic is the UTSC to Daniels transfer pathway in practice?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it common for students to take some Daniels or other St. George courses during first year before transferring?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If a student transfers after first year, do most first year credits usually still count toward the Daniels degree as electives\/breadth requirements, or do students often end up significantly delayed?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

oo\u00a0i\u00a0really love your question, it got me doing a ton of research. which\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0a complaint btw, it was\u00a0a great opportunity\u00a0to expand my\u00a0amazing and ginormous\u00a0repertoire\u00a0of\u00a0uoft\u00a0knowledge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

first of all congrats on your acceptance to utsc!! getting into uni is probably the biggest step of all, so you\u2019re already halfway there. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now sadly, i can\u2019t exactly tell you HOW realistic it is to transfer to daniels, or if it\u2019s common. i’ve personally never seen it, but i’m sure it does happen. i just haven\u2019t met anyone personally who’s done it, probably because aska isn\u2019t exactly the biggest social butterfly in existence. surprising for a person crouched behind a computer all day, i know.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the daniels website does mention transferring into the faculty from utsc<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not like it never happens.\u00a0<\/span>you can see more about how credit transferring works here<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0but basically, all\u00a0of your\u00a0utsc\u00a0courses and the marks you got in them will be\u00a0retained. none of them will apply to your\u00a0daniels\u00a0program, but they will count towards completing your degree.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

oh also, another thing you\u00a0have to\u00a0consider is that you may end up taking a program in the faculty of arts and science (st\u00a0george\u2019s\u00a0faculty for\u00a0the majority of\u00a0undergrad\u00a0programs) along with\u00a0your\u00a0daniels\u00a0program.\u00a0this\u00a0is because even the specialist in architectural studies is only 10.0 credits, and you need 20.0 to graduate.\u00a0it seems like this should be\u00a0relatively easy\u00a0once\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0in\u00a0daniels, but to be 100% honest with you,\u00a0i’m\u00a0not sure how exactly this works.\u00a0gasp, yes, unfortunately\u00a0aska\u00a0is not omnipotent :\/<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

i’d really recommend getting in touch with the undergrad admissions or registrar\u2019s offices at daniels to find out about how that whole thing works. there’s so so much red tape to navigate at uoft, ESPECIALLY with transfers, and talking to someone who knows what\u2019s up will make that infinitely easier to navigate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

as for what you should do in first year… you can totally take some courses at daniels if it\u2019s possible for you to get downtown easily. you can <\/span>check out the requirements for the program(s) you might wanna do here<\/span><\/a>, and from there check the first- or second-year courses that are available to non-daniels students. lots of them ARE restricted to current daniels students, but not all. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

another recommendation would be to take some utsc courses related to potential programs you\u2019re interested in, just in case you change your mind and to have a backup plan. if at all possible, i’d try to have certain days only for utsc courses and others only for daniels. because as someone who travels somewhat frequently from downtown to utsc myself, i think i would die if i had to do it, like, three times every day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

anyways that was super long-winded but i hope it helped, it was very fun to do all this research for you. in the end, though, i’m no academic advisor so i really really think you should reach out to <\/span>admissions\/the registrar at daniels<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and also\u00a0<\/span>the utsc registrar<\/span><\/a>. they will light the way (any house of the dragon fans? no? sigh…).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
