Hi,\u00a0I’m\u00a0a grade 11 student in\u00a0ontario\u00a0and\u00a0I’m\u00a0taking advanced functions and\u00a0I’ll\u00a0get\u00a0roughly an\u00a089 or 90 if I do\u00a0really good\u00a0on the final. The thing is, my school\u00a0doesnt\u00a0offer calculus so\u00a0I’ll\u00a0have to apply with my AF grade unless\u00a0i\u00a0take it in\u00a0nightschool\u00a0the first semester of next year.\u00a0\u00a0So how are my chances of getting into\u00a0rotman\u00a0(finance and economics) and if\u00a0theyre\u00a0not good, should\u00a0i\u00a0take calculus in night school to get a better grade and apply with that? if not, what can I do to improve my chances<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

these two asks are so so SO similar that it\u2019s scaring me a little. the logical side of me assumes you two are bffs who go to the same school and both realized you should consult the very wise askastudent you found on google. but part of me kinda hopes that you go to school in two entirely different cities and had the same idea at basically the same time because you have a crazy psychic connection….<\/span><\/p>\n

ok with that out of the way, to answer your question(s). it’s definitely not weird for schools to only have calc in second sem, i’m pretty sure my medium-sized high school did the same thing. i’d be pretty surprised if your school truly didn\u2019t offer it at all, though. from what i know, every school in ontario has to provide any course that\u2019s required for post-secondary programs. but if not, then yeah, night school\/online school is a valid option. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

however. with that said. i would highly, highly encourage you both to take calc in day school during your second semester of grade 12. that’s right, aska is getting a little serious with this one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now this is of course not to say that you\u2019re completely doomed if you don\u2019t follow my advice, but there\u2019s quite a few reasons why i think you should just stick to day school for calc. for one,<\/span>\u00a0the rotman admissions website says that they encourage students to take courses\u00a0in their day school if possible<\/span><\/a>. while this isn\u2019t an automatic disqualifier and you could probably explain this away IF your school doesn\u2019t offer calc at all for some reason, you might as well avoid doing anything that could potentially hurt your chances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

another reason is that… your marks in advanced functions aren\u2019t bad at all. the <\/span>rotman website says that mid-high 80s averages are the general range they\u2019re looking for<\/span><\/a>. i know that it can get competitive and you\u2019d prob wanna be a bit higher than that to feel safe, but even THEN, having an 88-90 in one course will not make much of a difference to that average. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and also, hate to break it to\u00a0ya,\u00a0but calc is\u00a0<\/span>probably\u00a0<\/span><\/i>gonna be harder than advanced functions. imo, pushing it forward into first sem will only make things a little trickier for you in what will probably already be a stressful time! both of your advanced function marks seem pretty solid to me, so it\u2019s not like you\u2019d need calc to \u201csave\u201d your average anyways. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so\u00a0what\u00a0i\u00a0think you\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span><\/i>do to improve your chances is, as you said, to start prepping for an awe-inspiring supplemental application.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the supplemental app\u00a0<\/span>will include some timed written and video responses<\/span><\/a>, usually about your skills\/interests and community involvement\/extracurriculars. the questions change every year so there\u2019s no way to know for sure what will be asked, but you can work on strengthening your involvement in ecs, volunteering, or a personal project, as well as jotting some points down about why you\u2019re interested in business (and rotman in particular).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
