i\u00a0missed the deadline to accept my\u00a0first year\u00a0residence guarantee\u00a0offer\u00a0by three hours because\u00a0i\u2019m\u00a0a dumbass.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

im\u00a0on the waitlist for university,\u00a0vic\u00a0and new college now.\u00a0is\u00a0there any hope of me getting an offer? or should\u00a0i\u00a0give up and look for off campus housing?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

oooouch i’m sure that was painful. but remember, you can make dumb mistakes and still not <\/span>be\u00a0<\/span><\/i>a dumbass.\u00a0we\u00a0all make\u00a0stupid\u00a0mistakes,\u00a0even (or\u00a0maybe especially)\u00a0aska.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

i couldn\u2019t find any official information about how the waitlist would work for you, since most of it was for upper-year returning students. however, there were a few ancient reddit\/facebook threads that said it was first-come, first-serve for first years. i can\u2019t say for sure if they\u2019re right, but it\u2019s possible. in that case you\u2019d have to be near the very front of the line, since i’m assuming you got on the list 3 hours after the guarantee window closed<\/span><\/p>\n

the fact that you\u2019re on three different waitlists gives me hope too, especially if one of them is for the college you belong to, since you\u2019d probably get priority there. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

i also found an old aska post from 2016 which says that<\/span>\u00a0waitlist offers start going out in late\u00a0june\/early\u00a0july<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0not sure\u00a0if\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0still the case, but if it is, you might\u00a0be getting one soon!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now while i do think that there is a very good chance that you get off the waitlist, you should still have a backup plan. the first place i’d start with is<\/span>\u00a0uoft\u2019s off-campus housing site<\/span><\/a>. they have a bunch of resources and programs, as well as a\u00a0<\/span>handy-dandy housing finder that lists places for rent by trusted owners<\/span><\/a>. if you have a friend who\u2019s also coming to uoft, you might want to consider being roommates with them, since it\u2019s usually cheaper to split a 2 bedroom than rent a 1 bedroom\/studio on your own. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

you\u00a0can also check out the standard rental sites.\u00a0<\/span>realtor<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>zillow<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>rentals.ca<\/span><\/a> always have a ton of listings, many more than the uoft housing finder. the downside is that you have to be a lot more careful when considering renting a place listed on one of those sites, since they aren\u2019t vetted nearly as much as the those on the housing finder. if you ever find yourself questioning the validity of a listing or just need some help,<\/span>\u00a0uoft does provide support<\/span><\/a>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

in the end i think it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll get off of the residence waitlist, but i can\u2019t make any promises, so i think it\u2019s worth it to start searching for somewhere off-campus just in case. if it ever comes down to it, uoft also has an <\/span>emergency housing support program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that can help\u00a0you find somewhere to stay.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
