{"id":9173,"date":"2014-08-19T11:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-19T15:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=9173"},"modified":"2019-08-05T00:39:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T04:39:54","slug":"transportation-in-t-dot-part-1-the-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/?p=9173","title":{"rendered":"transportation in t-dot &#8211; part 1: the GO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>a lot of the nightmare stories high school students tell about uoft are related to transport. &#8220;the campus is so big,&#8221; you whisper to each other in lockered hallways, &#8220;that people there have to take the <em>subway <\/em>between classes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>not true. some of us (including me) are so lazy that we do, in fact, take the subway, but if we (i) weren&#8217;t so <a href=\"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/chandlersunday.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stubbornly lazy<\/a>, then we (i) could easily walk.<\/p>\n<p>but people still spread rumours. so i&#8217;m here now to GRIND THEM INTO THE DUST.<\/p>\n<p>this crash course for commuters will be divided into three parts because everyone on the internet has the attention span of a goldfish, and none of us want to read anything that&#8217;s too long (even this sentence is bordering on challenging for me, and i wrote it).<\/p>\n<p>today: the GO train\/bus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>to travel using the GO system, you will need the following:<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestocard.ca\/en-US\/Pages\/ContentPages\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Presto card<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>this baby gets you anywhere (read: mostly anywhere until you really need to use it somewhere and it turns out they don&#8217;t take it -.-).<\/p>\n<p>instead of buying a tickets or monthly passes all the time, a Presto card can be reloaded with money for however long you need to use it. you can buy a Presto card at most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestocard.ca\/en-US\/Pages\/ContentPages\/CSO.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GO transit terminals <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestocard.ca\/en-US\/Pages\/TransactionalPages\/PurchaseFarecard.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">order one online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>to use your card, &#8216;tap&#8217; it on a <a href=\"https:\/\/askastudent.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/prestomachine.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Presto machine<\/a> at your train station or on your GO bus, and voila! you can preset your Presto to a default trip (eg. Oshawa &#8211; Union station), or, if you don&#8217;t want to do that, just remember to &#8216;tap off&#8217; (i.e. tap your card at a machine again) when you reach your destination (note: this only applies when you&#8217;re using the train, not the bus).<\/p>\n<p>once you get your Presto card, remember to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestocard.ca\/en-US\/Pages\/TransactionalPages\/AssociateFareMedia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">register it online<\/a>. that&#8217;s the only way you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gotransit.com\/public\/en\/fares\/taxcredit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claim it when tax time comes<\/a>. registering your card also allows you to deactivate it if (let&#8217;s be real: when) you lose it.<\/p>\n<p>finally, make sure to ask for a student discount on your Presto. ain&#8217;t no sense in getting even more broke than you&#8217;re going to be already. and when you do, you&#8217;ll need&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gotransit.com\/public\/en\/fares\/studentid.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a GO Student ID card<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>you&#8217;ll need to show this card along with your Presto any time someone checks your fare. you can get your GO ID at the <a href=\"http:\/\/map.utoronto.ca\/marker\/tcard-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-Card office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3.
