OSAP,  probation

expect some serious “I told you so”s

Hi! I have a question about OSAP. Last semester I took 4 courses and I failed one, and this semester I took 4 courses but I dropped 2 because they were too hard for me. I believe I’m on OSAP probation but I only received a letter telling me to start repaying the loans 6 months from now. I plan to take 3 courses (2.0credits) in the summer session. Is it still possible for me to apply for OSAP?

Oh, you frivolous toddlers, will you ever listen to the dry bureaucratic stipulations recited before you every time you engage in some sort of institutional procedure? “be sure to notify admissions and awards if there’s any change to your course load”, “if your income has increased, indicate it on this form”, and so on and so forth. But usually we disregard all that boring official rambling, an eye-shutting attitude that later boomerangs right back at us.

But hey, I’m no better, so I guess I’ll stop with the wrist slapping for now.

So, according to the online info I found, if a student fails to meet the academic requirements for osap, s/he “is put on OSAP probation; remains eligible for OSAP during the probationary period of 1 study period”. I guess this means summer session as well. Just remember you need to “maintain satisfactory academic status in all subsequent study periods to maintain OSAP eligibility”.

My hunch is that ?study period’ is referring to session, which in your case includes the summer session you’re about to take. So I guess this means you can’t screw this one up, cause if you do you’ll lose all your osap rights.

I would ***strongly*** advise you to meet with your registrar’s office’s financial counselor asap, and discuss your situation with him/her. And for pete’s sake, start reading the fine print!!!!

hey! so this was my first year attending post secondary courses , just shortly after the first month in i suffered from a medical / emotional crisis and missed about of month of class . I went back and decided to try and turn it all , unfortunatly i did not pass and of my courses because i had missed to much and couldnt make up for it even though i got all 80’s and 90’s on the remaining assignments and tests , it didnt seem to pull my final grades up to a pass , so im wondering , second semester starts in January and im suppose to receive osap sometime around the 26th of december , i registered for all the courses i failed and plan to retake them for the second semester. I’ve paid my minimum fees already but now im worried i will not receive my second term osap funding seeing as i did not meet academic standards , help! What can i do ? Am i still able to retake those courses this sem and receive funding to do so or am i screwed and start job hunting?

hey, i don’t know if this is still an issue, but basically you should be good for Winter term – OSAP won’t get your updated marks until April, meaning you’ll get your second term funding. However, if you only get 2.5 FCEs by the end of this year, you haven’t met the minimum 3.0 credits that OSAP needs you to get in a year, and that puts you in trouble for the 2014/15 year. So what you’ll want to do about that is go to enrolment services and see what you can do in the way of letting OSAP know what’s happened. You may have to write a letter to them, and then they can decide to put you on probation. That gives you time to get your marks up in the next year (2014/15), while still receiving funding. Hope that helps!
