    in a perfect world…

Sorry if this isn’t the proper way to ask!

Is there any way to change the start time you’re assigned on ROSI? I was?assigned 4:20 pm, but I’m working and can’t take the afternoon off.

    Thanks!

^I forgot to mention this, but I’ve already called the registrar’s office -?they were very unhelpful and I’m hoping you can help me out!!

    Thanks!!

    ?????????

    Hey hey

    Short answer = Nope.

    Long answer = Lol nope.

If changing start times was possible, every damn student would be on that option in a heartbeat sooooo I hope you have a friend you trust to enrol in courses for you. 😉

    Cheers!

what are the chances of me finding your question

    Good Afternoon Aska,

I was searching for a Time Table planner for the St. George, and Scarborough campus that displays the amount of spaces available in their classes. I go to UTM, and I am interested in enrolling courses at St. George/Scarborough (I already know how the enrolment process works). I know UTM has a time table planner that shows the amount of space available, and I just want to see if I will have any chance at getting into these classes so I can formulate a contingency plan.

    Thank You,

    ———————————————

    Um.

I THINK you’re asking me for a way to see the number of spots in a course before enrolling in it?

The only way I’m aware of for St. George and UTSC courses is to head onto ROSI and select “View Timetables/Spaces” under manage courses.

So try that to gauge your chances.

    Cheers!

    for the fumbling second-year:

Some tips to the second-year enrolling in courses today:

    1. If ROSI says you’re not in a proper subject POSt combination, it’s actually because, funnily enough, you’re not in a proper subject POSt combination. Remember guys: one specialist, two majors, or one major and two minors!

    2. If ROSI says the class you’re looking for “doesn’t exist,” it’s because you spelled something wrong in the activity code?or section code. Also, not that section codes are F, S, or Y. Don’t be the dummy who writes “H” there for his/her fall course!

    3. If ROSI says you don’t belong to the enrolment category, it’s because you probably don’t belong to the enrolment category. Check the timetable to be sure you can get past the priorities and restrictions for specific courses!

Happy course enrolment and, as per usual, may the odds be ever in your favour.

    Cheers!

if plan a fails, at least we have 25 more letters

    Hi!

I’m a first-year Humanities student, and my start time is 10:25 am. At first, I was somewhat relieved, but I don’t think it’s such a great time any more… I have a seminar that I want to get into, what are my chances? I’ve gotten at least 3-4 back-ups. Am I in trouble for getting the other courses that I want?

    ?????????

    Hey hey

I assume you’re talking about one of the 199Y seminars for first-year students, right?

Eh, even not, I’d say this still applies.

What are your chances? Uh. Good, I guess?

Unfortunately, your question is a liiiiiittle hard to work with considering all the nothing I have in terms of specifics, but seminars are seminars and they’re typically capped at 30 students or so. You can always check that for yourself though on ROSI under the “View Timetable/Spaces” tab of “Course Enrolment.”

Do take a look at the timetable and see if the course has any priorities or restrictions on it. If this seminar IS one of the 199Y ones, then yay you, you’ve officially eliminated any second, third and fourth year students from your own personal Hunger Games. ROSI Game. UofT Games?

Anyhow, I don’t think you should have too much trouble getting into your seminar.

Naturally, make it the first thing you try to sign up for on ROSI come enrolment day, but if that doesn’t fall through… well, you’ve already got your back ups. 🙂

    Cheers!

    prepping for the 6am melee

    Greetings,

Today I explored ROSI and i am accepted in social sciences however I now?want to be in Life Science. I read through your blog and it looks like its?relatively easy to change program. But the issue is not here.

I looked up the times for BIO120H1F and it said that I am not in the?category of enrollment for any of the lectures but practices yes. Will this?change when the time of actual enrollment comes? Yes I emailed the registrar.

    Thank you

    Lori

    ?????????

    Lori,

It’s because of the enrolment control put on the course.

If you click that little “see details” button beside the timetable info for BIO120H, you’ll see that it gives priority to first year life science students. Because you’re entering through social sciences, you’ll have to wait until August 8 to enrol in the course.

    Cheers!

aska reporting for duty at oh nine hundred hours!

Hello! I think the ROSI times are messed up. I have to enroll tomorrow at 12:15 but ROSI is only open tomorrow at 6am-11:45pm?? Which time do i actually enroll? I tried to contact them a few days ago and got no response.

    ———————————————

    Hey hey

Okay so I got your email on Sunday, meaning you think your enrolment is today but…

Well, there is no course enrolment today.

So I’m going to just go ahead and assume you’re going into second year and that you’re actually waiting for July 24?

Anyway, ROSI assigns start times based on a 24-hour clock. So if you were given 12:15, that means your start time is 15 minutes past noon. Make sense now?

    Cheers!

how to go about enrolment with as few tears as possible

    Hey hey all~

So if you’re lucky, this is the last time you’ll have to deal with ROSI for course enrolment. Yay you.

But the day still looms ahead of us, so here are some tips on how to make Monday’s enrolment at quick and easy as possible.

    ?????????

TIP 1: Check the mothereffing enrolment indicatiors!

Like I swear to Lucifer, this is everyone’s main problem.

While being an upper year means you’re probably taking courses that give you priority, if you’re a Psych major who suddenly decides she has a fancy for Shakespeare and wants to take ENG220Y, you’re going to find yourself at a bit of a roadblock.

A roadblock that says “please contact your registrar’s office.”

And then your registrar’s office is going to ask you “Well, do you have priority for the course?” with something of a sneer, and then you’re going to feel like a moron. Do you want to feel like a moron? Nah. No one likes that.

So heed the enrolment indicators. Please.

Basically if you’re not in x program, you probably can’t sit with the people that are.

    ?????????

TIP 2: Realize the university is huge.

Sometimes you won’t get the course you want. I know. I know it really sucks. I waited three years to finally take INI311Y. Like I barely got it for my last year guys.

It’s really, really unfortunate, but sometimes you won’t get the course(s) you want.

But take that as some good preparation for real life.

Sometimes you don’t get the job you want. Or the man you want. Or men. Or woman. Whatever. Sometimes you won’t get a pony or an orca or a panda. All you can do is move forward and make sure you have a back up plan.

    ?????????

TIP 3: Make sure you have your Subject POSts!?

Now this is mostly a second year student problem, but it applies to anyone with 4.0 FCE or more.

To go through with enrolment, you need to be ACTIVE in one specialist/two majors/one major+two minors.

This means that you have to accept the invitation the program you accepted might have sent you.?This also means that even if you didn’t get into the programs you wanted, you still will need POSts!

So how do you get by even though the Cinema Studies specialist rejected you in the first request period?

First, you cry. Second, you cry a bit more. Then after that, you settle. You join some combination of Type 1 programs and then you enrol.

Now relax, you’re not married to those programs — but you DO need them.

Think of it as a happy compromise.

The best thing you can do in that Type 1 settling for sort of situation is go into a program at least somewhat related to your program of choice, or a program that gives you priority into courses that will also be related to your program of choice.

    ?????????

    TIP 4: Use an order.

You can check how many spots are in a course on ROSI if you go to the “View Timetable/Spaces” tab.

There, note how many spots are in each of the courses you want.

    Then rank said courses.

Naturally, enrol in the class that has 25 spots before the one that has 140.

    ?????????

TIP 5: Enrol in courses YOURSELF.

If you’re getting a parent/friend to enrol for you because you’re off planting trees in the middle of nowhere or something and they botch things up, accept your fate.

    That’s on you.

If your account gets locked because they mess up your password, no one is going to fix things for your parent/friend. So if you don’t get the courses you want because we all had to wait for you to come back from your vacation in Neverneverland, again, that’s on you.

    ?????????

TIP 6: Have a contingency plan.

Always always ALWAYS have a contingency plan.

As I pointed out a few points ago, you won’t always get the courses you want, so make sure you have some other courses in mind!

    ?????????

    And remember…

    Cheers!

    aska: researcher and reiterater

    Hello,

I am second-year student who is doing an English Major, Writing and Rhetoric Minor, and History minor. I have a question regarding a course called PSY201H1F for 2013-2014. I have not yet declared myself, as a psych major but I have done the prerequisite for this course, which is PSY100H1F. Today I viewed the timetable for PSY201H1F, and this message appeared, “You do not fit in any enrolment category.” The course enrollment control for PSY201H1F is “P”. Thus I was wondering, when “P” is removed on August 8th, will this mean that the message disappear, and any students who have completed PSY100H1F can enroll on this course?

Additionally I am intending to declare myself as a psych major in the second round of subject post enrollment. Thank you very much for your help.

    Sincerely,
    Ken

    ?????????

    Ken,

This is going to be an extremely wordy version of “yes,” so feel free to stop reading here.

But yeah, once August 8 comes along, courses with a “P” indicator become free game, so yes, you’ll be able to enrol in PSY201H if it’s currently barred off to you.

    Cheers!

enrolment errors and other common situations

    Hello,

I will be asking the registrar for advice regarding my issue but I figure I might as well ask here too in case you may have encountered this same issue, and in the very least, maybe this will serve to aid any one else who encounters this issue.

I am going into my second year however I only have the credits to be considered a first year. Which is fine. But I am taking 1.5 credits this summer, which would place me into the second year category come September. This is again as expected. The issue I am running into is however the school emailed me with my enrolment time, and stated that based on the fact that I will have the credits to be considered second year, that I will be enrolling at the same time as students with 4.0-8.5 credits.

Then comes the day and I have all my course codes ready. I punch the very first one in and am given the message “you do not fit in any enrolment category”. After a bit of searching I discovered that at least for most people this is because they either lack the necessary amount of credits, or because their subject posts are incorrect and are barred from registering into new courses. But this is where my confusion comes from.

    1. I have a major, and two minors. All are ‘active’. But since I have 3.0 credits I did not believe this would be an issue, but to be sure, I had them declared nonetheless.

    2. The courses I am choosing are second year, not third or fourth. Why would they allow me to enrol for courses if I did not have the right amount?

    3. I even tried picking up a few first year courses, just as a test, and I received the same message.

I have no debt with the University, my entire first year completely paid off as well as my summer courses. I was a full time student. I intend to be again. My status on ROSI is ‘invited’. As far as I can tell I should be able to pick my courses and yet I cannot even pick up a first year course. This does not appear to be a global issue because someone I know was able to pick their courses just fine.

I’m at a loss. Hopefully you can help me in this.

    Thank you for the time.

    ———————————————

    Hey hey

Yeaaah your situation is quite confusing.

The end result is that you’re going to have to talk to the registrar’s office at UTM so that they can delve into the kinks of the matter, but here are some possibilities I can propose…

    1. Your extra summer courses (that 1.5 FCE) are from a different university. If that’s the case, they might just not be getting put into the credit count by ROSI.

    2. You’re just having bad luck with the enrolment controls. For example, although you’re trying with 100-level courses, those usually give priority to incoming students and fourth/fifth year students.

    3. You’re not meeting prerequisites. Sometimes you just need 4.0 FCE. Look for a course that seems to be pretty fair game for now.

    Annnnnnd that’s all I’ve got.

    Cheers!

the half credit leap of doooom

    Hi aska,

I have just finished first year and I have made bad decisions throughout?this whole year and I have regretted every decision. A good girl, straight?A’s from high school I apply as a fulltime student with 5 credits however?whenever a class seemed to hard or I messed up on my midterm, I was happy?to solve it by dropping it :)…well that was the biggest mistake of my?life :(. Second semester comes and goes and I have failed 2 of my classes?which leaves me with 2.5 credits and on Rosi it has said that I am?financially cancelled (OSAP) and that I am now part time status. What the?hell am I suppose to do now? I had completely forgot that I needed to?maintain 3 credits and now I have to pay OSAP back for failing to meet 60%?course load so I found a job so i can pay them pay. My question has to do?with my part time status…I know I messed up but I have learned from my?mistakes to not drop a course because it became harder but to seek extra?help, so does that mean when it comes time to enrolling in courses for?september I am going to be regarded as part time? How can I change my?status to full time for 2nd year and so that osap can see that i am?enrolling as fulltime and not part-time? help me please I don’t know who to?contact for this parttime fulltime mess!

    ?????????

    Yo.

Sooooo I suppose you didn’t stay in enough classes to know how to divide things into paragraphs huh?

Anyway, the time you enrol in courses is based on the number of credits you have, not whether you’re “part-time” or “full-time.” Now since you ended the year with only 2.5 FCE, you’ll be enrolling with the first year students (0 to 3.5 credits) on July 30.

Becoming full-time is simple. Just enrol in a full course load. As long as you take anywhere over 3.0 FCE, you’re considered full-time, and as long as you actually do so, OSAP should know you’re full-time when you hand in whatever forms you need to into Enrolment Services.

It’s really as easy as taking the right number of courses.

And, of course, passing them. 😉

    Cheers!

here i go again on rosi

    Hi Aska,

I need to return for a fifth year because I have not completed all of my degree requirements but I have more than 20 credits. Do you know what the enrolment policy is in my case? Which category do I belong in for enrolment start time, etc.?

I appreciate the help. Your website is great!

    ?????????

    Yo!

So it?s all quite simple actually since you?re just registering the same way you have for the past four years.

Basically you?ll be on the first day of course enrollment ? July 15 ? with the soon-to-be fourth years. And you?ll probably get the super sweet 7AM slot since you have 20 credits already.

    And that?s that! Easy, right?

    what’s my year again?

    Hey Aska!

First off, let me just say this website is awesome. Even before I got into U of T, it cleared up all my questions. =)

Anyways, first year has been kind of a rough ride for me. I entered university thinking I wanted to do something in the physical/mathematical sciences and took a whole combination of math and economics courses. But, by the end of first semester I ended up dropping out of most of those courses and enrolled in a different set of humanities courses for second semester. All in all, it wasn’t a positive experience but this semester has been going well (much better than the last). I like my courses and I think I want to know what to declare my POSt as.

However, I read on the U of T website that you have to have 4.0 courses to enroll in a subject POSt. I will only have completed 3.0 full credits by the end of this fall/winter session. I plan on taking summer school to make up for my 2 foregone credits, but in regards to start times for enrolling in courses for the next fall/winter session, will I be considered a first year or a second year student (if I am enrolled in summer courses)? I expect to have completed at least 4.0 FCE by September, but I would like to know if I will be a second year when start times are decided because a lot of second year courses give priorities to certain majors.

In case it was relevant, I am interested in the English major, but I know it’s a really popular program so I don’t want to have to wait list all of my courses or end up in my last choices during the first year enrollment period.

Any wisdom you have would be greatly appreciated,

    S =)

    ?????????

    Yo!

You know, one thing I noticed is that for a first-year, you actually write “POSt” correctly. I’ve seen many combinations of the upper and lowercase letters, but you actually got it! Woooo!

Anyway, on to your question, you’ll be considered a second-year student during enrollment time as long as you’re in 1.0 FCE during the summer session. Basically, according to our lovely calendar, you’re considered a second-year at that point as long as you expect to have at least 4.0 FCE by the end of the summer session. Pretty generous of UofT, right?

But honestly… okay, I hate to be the one to say this, but start times are based on your number of credits, so although you’ll be considered second-year and be allowed to enroll in that week, you will most likely be stuck with a start time in the evening. Personally, I ended my first year with 4.5 credits and had a start time around 5pm. Hopefully you luck out, but if you don’t end up getting those English courses you want (e.g. “The Graphic Novel,” which is awesome, or “Children’s Lit,” WHICH DO NOT TAKE OKAY NO), then that will give you time to take the less desirable courses that will fulfill your other requirements.

    So yeah. Second year.

    Cheers!

    aska
