engineering,  probation

woooah man, that’s deep! pass the nachos…

Hi and Please help me out to get some clarification. I have just finished first year in Enginering in UOFT and I have failed and they have put probation on me for one semester which means that I cannot join until Jan 2009. My cumalative GPA was 1.26 and I understand that I need to obtain 1.60 … My Problem is dont know what to do until jan 2009 . I have been told by some friends that I can attend lectures from Sep however they dont consider me for exams.. is that possible ? Can i just simply go and sit in class and take second year courses so I am ready in jan 2009 ? please help me to get some clarification. Thanks

?

Some things needn’t be asked. These are obscurities that will cause your brain to malfunction if you actually give them some thought. Questions like: what was there before the big bang? What is infinity? Is it possible that how I see the spectrum is not how other people see it? What did Priscilla Presley’s original facial features look like? Usually these come up in certain social constellations, and are followed by reckless consumption of high-carb snacks. Your enquiry, my probationed engineering friend, belong to that dark category of mysteries better left untouched. In other words, I know nothing about the faculty of engineering.

BUT, from what I gather, if an Engineering student fails the term, s/he needs to repeat that term when it is next offered. For you that would be January 2009. According to the engineering calendar, in order to improve your status, you need to have two successive sessions with a weighted sessional average of at least 70% (not including your repeated session). I think this means that after you repeat your failed session in January, you will still have to sweat it through the two next sessions (including summer session) to be off the hook.

What does this have to do with your question? I’m not sure, but this was just a way for me to think out loud and try to figure out how the heck the Engineering probation system works. I don’t think you can pull off auditing second year courses, because you’ll need permission from your registrar to do that, and I find it hard to imagine they’ll give you that. I wouldn’t try sneaking in either, because they’ll eventually catch you and that won’t be good.

Anyway, it doesn’t seem like it’s that crucial for you, since by repeating the January session, you’ll essentially be delayed a year, and then if you make it through that, you’ll eventually do the 2nd year fall session that you’re missing out on. ?My hunch is that if you’re on probation for insufficient marks in your first year, auditing second year classes won’t make much of a difference. What you may be able to do is attend first year classes, but I’m not sure that’s what you want.

In any case, I don’t really know what I’m talking about. PLEASE go see your 1st year rep or registrar, cuz I do not want your purple blood on my hands…
