askastudent breaks down borders

Now that I’ve moved to a small apartment in a retirement center, the last thing I need is clutter. Next month, I’m having my 70th birthday party, which leads to my problem. At previous parties, I’ve asked that no one bring a gift, but many just dismissed my request as modesty. How do I make it clear I’m serious about my guests showing up empty-handed?

well, i’ll be honest, i never really thought i would get a question like this.
i have two suggestions:
1. ask them to make donations in your name to a charity of your choosing instead. you’ll get the satisfaction and happiness that goes with donating and there will be no clutter in your apartment.
2. start giving some of your stuff away. maybe clear out a little extra space so that you do have room for the new stuff. the givers are probably just trying to be nice, as i’m sure you understand, and it is hard to not get somebody as wonderful as yourself a birthday present.
cheers and merry christmas,
