Hi,

I applied under the humanities and I want to major in English. Would it be possible to double major with Cognitive Science although it is not in the same stream? Do double majors take longer to complete than having only one major?

Yes, it is possible to couple a major in Cognitive Science with one in English. In fact, in order to graduate from UofT, you NEED to have either two majors OR one major and two minors OR a specialist program (though no one seems to know that – how do people graduate?). Take your pick.

A single major requires around 7 credits, so two majors would require… well, I’m sure you can do the math. You need 20 credits in total to graduate, so a double major would leave you with around 6 credits – that’s a lot! – for those delightful electives.

I thought that that the “two majors OR one major and two minors OR a specialist program” concept was only for Hon.

    Anonymous,

Yes, you are right. But I am more right. Regular BA/BSc degrees (as opposed to Hon. BA/Hon. BSc degrees) have been discontinued.

Directly from the Arts and Science calendar:

“Effective for students registering in a degree program in the Faculty for the first time in the 2001 summer session or later, the St. George Campus of the Faculty of Arts and Science has discontinued the 15-course (three-year) B.A. and B.Sc. degrees; ONLY 20-course (four-year) Honours B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com degrees will be available. Students registered in a degree program in the Faculty before the 2001 summer session may still choose a 15-course (three-year) degree.”

So unless you came to UofT in 2001 or earlier (and if you did, I’m sorry – but you need to get out of UofT pronto and get out into the real world), you must follow the requirements for Hon. BA/Hon. BSc degrees, so you must have one specialist/two majors/one major and two minors.
