Hi aska,
I am asking this on behalf of my cousin in the faculty of arts and science.
He has just finished first year and 5.00 credits, and has barely been able to maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.50.
From the official U of T calendar, it says that academic standing is assessed twice a year, after Winter and after Summer. I am also aware of the policies about GPA and probation/suspension.
What’s not clear is what happens after wrapping up the Fall session, because my artsci friends who are In Good Standing after year 2 and beyond never get their academic status displayed after the Fall semester, only after the Winter/Summer semester.
Let’s say my cousin finishes the Fall session and his cumulative GPA falls below 1.50. Will he be put on probation right away?
And let’s say my cousin’s cumulative GPA falls below 1.50 after Fall and he is unable to meet the 1.50/1.70 rule after Winter. Will he only get probation due to standing (apparently) not being assessed in the Fall, or will he be suspended?
I would appreciate it if you could clear up this confusion, thanks!
Regards,
Thomas

Hey Thomas,
So your ?cousin? seems to be in a bit of a pickle huh?
The reason the calendar seems unclear about what happens after the fall session is because nothing happens after the fall session. Like you said, your CGPA is only assessed in regards to academic probation at the end of a full session, that being after winter or after summer. So if your ?cousin? finishes the fall session with a GPA below 1.5, nothing will happen.
However, if your ?cousin? doesn?t fix things in the winter term to end the year with a 1.7 GPA or at least make a CGPA of 1.5, then your ?cousin? will be suspended for a year.
Hope this clears up any confusion for your ?cousin?! 😉
Best,
aska

Hi aska,
Thanks for clearing this up. Haha, I’m serious that it’s really my cousin, since I’ve already graduated 🙂
