were you a kinesiologist in a past life?

If I wanted to apply to U of T for a double major in Commerce and something in the Humanities, how should I go about doin this? Apply to Commerce or Humanities?

Haven’t we had this conversation before? You, telling me you want to keep your options open, Me, discouraging you and shattering all your dreams… Oh, wait a minute, that was someone else- so do me a favour and check out this post, you might find it useful.

So let’s recap:

  • You can theoretically do the double major option, but that has serious drawbacks in terms of finance, course load, and the degree you’ll end up with.
  • Furthermore, students that apply, and are accepted to the Commerce stream get priority in enrolment for the first year Commerce course, which is otherwise hard to get into.
  • So, my advice to you (if you’re still interested in Commerce) is to apply for the Commerce stream, and then in your first year at UofT decide if you rather be a filthy rich and soulless, or starving and happy (just kidding, that’s just my own bias rearing its ugly head). You can take humanities courses on top of your Commerce requirements, and see what fits you better.
  • BUT there’s a catch: students that are accepted into first year Commerce are guaranteed continuing the program in their higher years, provided that they take all the first year commerce courses and pass them with a sufficient mark, plus maintain a good GPA. If you’re going to take a bunch of humanities courses instead of the Commerce reqs, your guarantee is revoked, and you’re going to have to apply for the program at the end of the first year, and who knows what that will bring.

So there you have it. Even though you can change your program later on, with commerce it’s better to apply for the commerce stream and fulfil all the requirements. Otherwise it ain’t easy getting there. Looks like there’s some serious decision making in store for ya. Break a leg!

I’m in this same situation!! but I”m only choosing to enrol in the Humanities stream over the Commerce stream because I don’t want my sucky math marks to be part of my top 6 consideration. I’ll still take the reqs for both programs in first year though, then I’ll apply to commerce after. Help me… smart move?
