    oooh probation show some salvation

Hi there. I’m a first year student and I’m a little concerned about academic probation. I’m finishing up my first year now, and I’m not doing very well. I’ve had some difficulty adjusting to University, and I’m trying, but it’s been difficult. I finished two 0.5 courses last semester with a 53 and a 56. I’m finishing up second term, and I’m almost 100% positive that I failed Intro to Sociology (0.5 credits). However, I have two full-year courses that I think I did okay in, and I’m sure I did very well on one of the exams. The other course is a science, and I’m a humanities student, and I have the exam tomorrow, and naturally I’m concerned. Are first years exempt from being up for Academic Probation? If yes, will I be notified? And if I fail that sociology course, I’m down at 3.5 credits. Will that affect anything or simply prolong the time it takes me to complete my necessary credits for graduation. I’m sorry for all the questions, I’m just freaking out. Thanks for your time.

Hey newest U of T edition,

Essentially, this is what all student begin to look like this time of year. Maybe that’s exaggerated, but that is sure how we all felt.? Just look around campus, you can see the despair of the end of? term setting in.

Alright, so what you are feeling right now is felt by many of first years students. Please don’t get discouraged … the first year?is a bit of a biotch. Its hard to transition your academics and personal life at the same time. Insert usual shpeel about resources (re: career center and academic advisors).

They (the bigwigs at U of T) determine your academic standing as soon as you have attempted 4.0 FCE. Which, if your calculations are correct, you have attempted in your first year (so this includes failed courses). Here’s all the hub-bub in the course calendar on Academic

    Academic Standing

There are four kinds of academic standing which apply to students who have attempted at least four courses in the Faculty: In Good Standing; On Probation; On Suspension; Refused Further Registration

Academic standing is assessed twice a year:

    1. At the end of the Fall/Winter Session; the GPAs used for this status assessment are the annual and the cumulative GPAs.
    2. At the end of the Summer Session; the GPAs used for this status assessment are the sessional and the cumulative GPAs.

Note: Students who have not achieved final standing* in 4.0 credits will have a status of “Not Assessed”.

    In Good Standing:

Students are described as In Good Standing if they are neither On Probation, Suspended nor Refused Further Registration; these terms are explained below. For students with particularly noteworthy academic results, there are three specific forms of recognition, which are described in the ?Student Services & Resources? section.

    Probation; Suspension; Refused Further Registration

The following regulations apply to students who have attempted at least four courses* in the Faculty.

    1. A student shall be on academic probation who
      a) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 or
      b) returns from suspension.
    2. A student who, at the end of the Winter or Summer Session during which he or she is on probation
      a) has a cumulative GPA of 1.50 or more shall be in good standing
      b) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 but an annual GPA of 1.70 or more (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of 1.70 or more (Summer Session) shall continue on probation.
      c) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 and an annual GPA of less than 1.70 (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of less than 1.70 (Summer Session) shall be suspended for one calendar year unless he or she has been so suspended previously, in which case he or she shall be suspended for three years.
    3. A student who, having been suspended for three years, is again liable for suspension shall be refused further registration in the Faculty.

    * “Achieved final standing” applies to courses in which a student remains formally enrolled on the last date for cancellation, unless the academic penalty normally attached to a later cancellation is removed by petition. This includes CR/NCR, but does not include courses with LWD or WDR.

NOTE: Students ?On Academic Probation? may take no more than five courses in each of the Fall and Winter Sessions.

So, if your CGPA is lower than 1.50 you will be put on probation. BUT, that’s what probation is for. If they didn’t have faith that you could turn things around they would jsut suspend you. They will inform you if you are placed on probation.

    Hope this help!

    goooood morning, probation

So I’ve been trying to do my best with my MAT136 course and my CHM138 course but these two subjects are seriously hard! And even if I pass CHM138 I feel like MAT136 may be a bit of a stretch. My GPA last term was 1.48 and I’ve been trying hard to get my GPA up for this term so that I don’t go on probation.
But what exactly does it mean to be on probation?
And are summer courses calculated into this annual GPA that must be over 1.7?

Hope you can help solve my confusion.

    Thanks!

    ??????????????????????-

    Gooooood morning … you,

Probation isn’t all that scary, but I would try my darndest not to be on it.

Your?academic standing it assessed twice a year.

They don’t start assessing you until you have?complete 4.0FCE.

Pretty much, they give you a year to get your shit together and then you are suspended. If you are pretty damn close to failing and there looks like no chance of you improving you can talk to your registrar’s office about a LWD/a late withdrawel.

?So, no ankle bracelets are involved, but I would steer the other direction anyways.

    2 CC, 4 Uni, 2 F, 1 C … riddle me that

Ok so my plan for college was to do 2 years at a community college then transfer to a four year private university. The first year was fine but the second fall semester I got two F’s and a C and was put on academic probation. My life is a mess right now so I decided to not take classes this spring semester, this was before I knew about the academic probation. So I guess what my question is if I am not taking classes to improve my GPA will they automatically lower me to suspension, then eventually kick me out?

Also, how will the schools I hope to try and apply for later on, look at this whole issue?

    ??????????????????????-

Generally, your academic standing is determined at the end of the summer session and the end of the fall/winter session. Meaning that you should have have known about your probation in Sept before the start of your Fall semester.

I have the sneaky suspicion that you are contacting me from outside of U of T and maybe even outside of Canada, which is super awesome but also makes it difficult to give you exact information.

Generally I would say that you stay on probation until you return to school, but because you started the academic session it might be recalculated.

Your best bet is to go to your registrars’ office and get a date with an academic advisor.

If you get your?average into what is needed for the?university that you are applying to, the probation might not make a difference in their decision.

    forever truly your,

    hi there
i was actually having a pretty tough day. i received academic warning today… thank god, and this is the very first time in my life!!!i am currently a rotman commerce student. although some of my friends didnt do well in economics either, they did well in management. so they only got one course to worry about while i got two! i didnt do well in either management or economics! i know i shouldnt compare myself with anyone, but still, this situation quite worries me.though i use little time to have fun such as hanging out with my friends, i’m not a nerd who studies 24 hours a day.i went to all the lectures, took notes, studied when i got back home, relax myself when i felt tired, reviewed before tests like everyone did, sometimes i even used more time to review for the tests but still i got pretty low marks.after all, my life in university is like: eating, sleeping, studyingi really no idea what kind of ‘good study habits’ i should have… i really try hard to adjust my time reasonably so that i can study hard while keeping my body healthy…
i know i really BS a lot……. but i really have no idea about whttttttttt should i do now… :'(pls help!!!!!!!!!!!

    ———————————————

    Yo Lost B,

You might want to try this. I know you’re not literally pregnant, but maybe a little with the spawn of U of T.

Or yoga! The main thing is just breathe for a moment. You can’t change the marks you got in the past. You need to focus on the future ones.

The transition from highschool to university is tricky for everyone. You either have to deal with academic, emotional or social adjustments.

Here are some things that might be of use to you:

    Academic Success links

    Academci Success workshops

You can try these, but I think the best thing for you to do is to go in and make an appointment with an academic advisor at your registrar’s office. From what you are telling me, you are doing things right (aside from stressing) so there might be something more you can fill the advisor in on.

Although academics are important, the social aspect of university is key to keeping a balance in life in general.

    eternally imbalanced,

    downward dog your worries away

    Hi,

I am deathly afraid as to what my future will hold for me. I feel that if I do not graduate in 4 years, I am a failure. Right now, I am on academic probation, but did not acheive the 1.5 GPA for the fall/winter session. Does that mean I will not be able to attend school for the January – April school year? What am I going to do? I feel very lost and worthless. Please, please, PLEASE.. shed some light for me.

    Scared to Death.

    ???????????????

    Hey Scared to Death,

First off …?WHOA!!! calm yourself … breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

    The course calendar says:

Academic standing is assessed twice a year:

    1. At the end of the Fall/Winter Session; the GPAs used for this status
assessment are the annual and the cumulative GPAs.
    2. At the end of the Summer Session; the GPAs used for this status assessment
are the sessional and the cumulative GPAs.

You are good to go for the winter session. They will reassess your situation at the end of this currrent semester. Many students are put on probation and even more take more than 4 years to complete their degree. Honestly I know more people who took?longer than 4 years, than who do it in that time. That’s only a “suggested” time frame to do your degree in. If you find that 5 courses a semester are too many, take less and make sure you get good marks in those classes.

What you are feeling is totally normal. If you have a little panic moment, feel free to talk with your academic advisor and they can tell you all the options that are available for you.

Hi, new student into UofT. Here’s the deal; I just went through my first semester here and of the three courses I took, when I first looked at my
results, I already failed one course. Right away though, I signed up for a retake. However, secong time around, I found the final mark I’ve been
waiting for BUT I failed that course too. Im not retaking that one cause there’s really no point to it, specially since Im not going into that field
    (rather not say what the subject it). My concern is two things;
    1) would they kick me out of the university for failing 2/3 courses the first year? And
    2) what would I need to do to save my GPA?
    Much Thanks 🙂

    ???????????????

    Hi there our littliest newbie,

There are a?couple of steps before getting the boot. Your “standing” with the university doesn’t get accessed until you have completed 4.0 credits. Unless you kick some serious ass in that last credit, you will most likely be put onto probation.

Here’s what the course calendar has to say:

Luckily, as a first year, you have plenty of time?to get your act together and save your CGPA …go, go CGPA

I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again

    Hey There!
?So basically I had this health issue in my first year that caused me to fail everything.Literally EVERYTHING. I spent the finals in the hospital 🙁
?Anyways I was told I should take the year off afterwards but smartass that I am I decided to plow ahead.
?So? what happened is now I’m kicked out of school. I could always come back after my suspension but looking at it realistically I’m probably not going to get the required cgpa because of my first couple years so I was wondering if there was anyway to start from the beginning. Fresh start. Or should I start looking elsewhere for my education.
    ?
PS I think this site is flippin awesome.

    ???????????????

    Hey sick-now-healthy-but-in-need-person,

Duuuuuude you can totally do this. I’m not just saying this because I have sympathy because you didn’t fail because of an addiction to special brownies or late night booty calls, but for a legitimate reason.

It’s two year, not the end. Step it?up like Will.

Here’s what I can tell you. If you giver with your last two years … or three (no shame in a 5th year) you can get the marks to graduate. Now if you are considering a stint with a Masters, you will be happy to know that many universities look at just your last two years of grades and consider an inprovement in your grades when determining admissions.

In case you were wondering here is info on probation.

Now go kick ass <high five>

    To whom it may concern,

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I am a student at UTM, and currently I am trying to get off of my probabtion. The thing is I am scared that I will not be able to make the Cumulative GPA average of 1.7 because I have 3 courses that are bringing me down. I am positive I will be able to meet the requirements for the Session and the Annual GPA, – but I have a feeling that I won’t be able to get a Cumulative of 1.7. My question is whether or not I will be suspended from school? Or can I go to summer school still and take a course or two and get a GPA above 1.7; and if so, then will that count for toward getting off of probation and my status going back to good standing?

If you could please help me with these questions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    -Amanda

    ???????????????

    Hey Amanda (Bynes?)

Here is what UTM has to say on the matter:

Students who at the end of a session during which they were placed on probation, have a Cumulative GPA of 1.50 or more shall continue their studies in good standing.

Students who at the end of a session during which they were placed on probation have a Cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 but a summer sessional or annual (Fall-Winter Session) GPA of 1.70 or more shall continue on probation.

Students who at the end of a session during which they were place on probation have a Cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 and a sessional GPA of less than 1.70 shall be suspended for one calendar year. In the case, where a students have been suspended previously, they shall be suspended for three years.

    ?

If your CGPA is higher than 1.5 you will be considered in good standing. If your CGPA is lower than that BUUUUT your annual or sessional GPA is higher than 1.7 you will remain on probation for another semester. If you do not acheive either of those requirements you will be suspended for a year. If you are suspended at the end of the semester, you most likely will not be allowed to make up for it in the summer as you cannot take courses on a suspension.

Go in to your registars and make an appointment with one of the helpful academic advisor and they can tell you your options

    1 probation, 2 probation, 3 probation, 4?

I am studying 2F semester in UofT Engineering faculty on double probation. May be this year also I can get probation. So as per regulation after 3rd probation my readmission will be refused in faculty of Engg. in UofT.

My question if readmission in faculty of Engg. is refused in UofT does it mean that admission in faculty of Engg. in all other university will also be
refused? Or, I may apply for admission to faculty of Engg. in other universities. If yes, if I am to apply as fresh student or as a transfer student.

Another question,? if readmission in faculty of Engg. is refused in UofT does it mean that admission in other faculty of Uoft or other university will also be refused?

    ???????????????

Yo, so here’s the down low. U of T isn’t going to red?flag you from all other universities, but you also can’t hide all those dreaded marks that put you on probation … multiple times. You are required to show all post-secondary marks when applying to university or college.

Might I also suggest you considering something else then engineering, maybe your guiding light shouldn’t be aimed in that direction anymore. There’s enough engineers in this world, why not try something else that you might enjoy more and get killer grades in.

This is who I’m going to suggest you talk to: the engineering registrar (416-978-5896). Your best bet is to?give them a shout and set up?an appointment.?They?can look at your?marks and?show you what options are left open still.???

Damn you ROSI, I want my marks NOW … bitch

    Hi Aska,
I?m a first year student at UTSC (unfortunately) and I have a few questions about final marks.
    1) Two of my final marks have been posted on ROSI and I am still waiting for two more to be posted. I know that it takes a while to mark all of the exams but this is starting to get ridiculous. A new semester is about to start, is it too much to ask that I get my final marks BEFORE a new semester begins?……does it always take this long for marks to be posted or is it just my marks in particular?
    2) When I logged on to ROSI a few days ago to see if any new marks had been added I noticed that a mark for one class had been updated. The mark I received was a 71% which I was quite happy with. However, I logged back on today and that 71% had mysteriously dropped to a 61%. So my question is simply this….WTF?
    3) And for my final question……..I have received two of my marks so far……the 61% and another class which I failed. I am expecting to be in the 60-range for my other two marks, and because a fail counts as a 0 towards my GPA it looks like I am going to end up on academic probation. I just finished my first semester of university and am already suffering academically. Is this common for first year students, and have I completely screwed myself already?
    Thanks,
    JS

    ???????????????

Alright, I’m going to answer your questions in the same organized manner you asked it in

1)Chill dude! There’s a delay between when your prof sends your marks into ROSI and when you can see them. I’ve definitely had to wait awhile for marks, so it’s probably not just you. If you’re really concerned about it just shoot your prof an email and make sure everything is in order.

2)I know I’m suppose to have the answers to all questions (and generally, well, I do) but there is no legal way for me to know the answer to this question. I guess I could break into your prof’s office, tie them to a chair and demand an answer. OR you can just email them, or stop by their office and they will be happy to explain it to you.

    3) You are not alone. It is not uncommon for students to have a hard time adjusting to coming to university. When I say adjusting I mean balancing drinking, hotties and studying. That is why they don’t kick you to the curb on your first offense. Here is the some information on probation at UTSC. You must return your CGPA to 1.60. Work hard, and you’re good to go

AND don’t be afraid to stop by an academic counselor. They can look at your situation and make some suggestions. No, there is not one standing behind with a gun to my head forcing me to write this. In my experience they are one of the best resources to own at university.

    Tenderly yours,
    Aska

I feel like a convict being on probation

Hello mate your great for giving all these cool responses.

Anyway, to cut a long story short I’m on probation.? I took 3 courses I’m gonna have to LWD one to and come down to two.? Is it possible to get out of probation while taking only 2 courses?

    ??????????????

    Yo yo, short story-er

It really depends on? your current CGPA and the marks you’re getting in your other course. But generally I’m going to say it will be very hard to. This is what the course calendar says on your situation

” A student who, at the end of the Winter or Summer Session during which he or she is on probation

    a) has a cumulative GPA of 1.50 or more shall be in good standing

    b) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 but an annual GPA of 1.70 or more (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of 1.70 or more (Summer Session) shall continue on probation.

    c) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 and an annual GPA of less than 1.70 (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of less than 1.70 (Summer Session) shall be suspended for one calendar year unless he or she has been so suspended previously, in which case he or she shall be suspended for three years. “

Meaning that in order to be ‘In Good Standing’ you must raise you CGPA above 1.50 which could prove challenging or impossible depending on the amount of credits and the grades you have.

So it doesn’t matter how many credits you take, but the more courses with high grades will help to balance out the not so hot grades.

You might as well talk with your academic adviser about what you’ll have to do to get out of probation as you have to speak with them in order to LWD from a course.

    Peace and Love baby,

    Aska

    had a bad year

    Dear Aska,

I’m currently a third year student at UofT, but had a pretty rough year: I literally failed all four of the courses I took. So far my GPA has been calculated on ROSI, but my academic standing doesn’t seem to be listed (I heard from someone that they don’t assess your standing if you didn’t get at least one credit that session, but I digress). My question is, is there any way to get the past year off of my cGPA or is my best bet to just retake all of those courses?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

Sorry to hear about your rough year. It definitely happens to the best of us (and more often than you think). Your past year will totally count towards your CGPA since it’s a cumulative calculation of your entire academic history. Since you didn’t do a late withdrawal on the courses before the end of the term, they will count towards your degree. If you need the credits to graduate, you will have to retake the courses and pass them, however, I imagine that you are probably on academic probation.

Here’s what the calendar says about academic probation. Remember that if this happens more than three times, you will be refused from the faculty.

    Probation; Suspension; Refused Further Registration

The following regulations apply to students who have attempted at least four courses* in the Faculty.

    1. A student shall be on academic probation who

    a) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 or

    b) returns from suspension.

The best thing to do is talk to your registrar as immediately as possible to find out how to proceed. On academic probation, you won’t be able to register in any courses for this fall semester. Soon enough, your GPA will show up on ROSI but for now, talk to your registrar about how to go forward.
