battle of the sciences

I need to know what the neurosci major is all about. I’ve emailed so many
people but no one is replying. Is it hard? Will it kill my GPA? I’m super
interested in the topics but I ain’t gonna sacrifice my medical career for
it. Is a general human bio major easier? I mean it says that it doesn’t
need stats so I’m in shock.. I’m going into my second year so I’m praying
for the best! Thanks xx

hi!

to look into what a program is “all about”, you can look it up on the faculty’s calendar. here, there is a short description of the program as well as all the courses that are required for it. by looking at the courses, you can gauge how much you’d enjoy being in the program as well as how well you think you would do. unfortunately, i don’t know how “hard” the major is or if it’ll kill your GPA. all i can say is that if you genuinely enjoy the program and the content of the courses, you won’t find it “hard”.

for the difference between human bio and neuroscience, i would get in contact with the department. they would have the most relevant and up-to-date information.

good luck!

aska

Yo. I’m not sure if you’ll end up seeing this comment, but I’m a somewhat recent neuroscience special grad (is it recent if I started uni in 2011? Time passes by fast..), and I can drop my thoughts here if you’re interested. Feel free to ignore me, I tend to ramble on.
I would agree with aska. I also don’t think there’s really any major at UofT that is “easy”, whatever that means, though if there really is such a thing, neuroscience wouldn’t be it. I think, as aska said, if you find the material interesting and are passionate about learning neuro, then you’ll be more likely to engage with the material in a way that means you end up doing well in the courses. Also it’s a lot easier to study for something that you like. Anecdotally, I know people who have gotten into medical school having done the neuroscience major, and I know people who have failed to get into medical school with the neuro major. Make of that what you will. I think questions like “is it hard” and “will it kill my GPA” are so hard to answer, since it’s all so subjective.. Neuroscience didn’t kill my GPA, but it probably killed some other people’s GPAs..
At a more philosophical level, I think it’s one of the saddest things to decide not to learn about something you’re interested in just cause of how it may affect your chances of medical school. I wanted to go to medical school back in the day, and then I did neuro and loved it and decided that maybe I want to learn even more about it, so here I am in graduate school doing neuroscience research. Life works in funny ways sometimes.
