HELP! Opinion: CHM247 or BCH311

Dearest Aska,

This might sound trivial compared to other questions you get, but I’m honestly having trouble deciding between two courses. I’m a second year student in life sci with the hope of going into the medschool in Canada, but my current gpa sits around 3.6-3.7. I’m debating between CHM247 and BCH311 for this winter term, but neither are requirements for my program and I don’t really know where to turn to. I’ve looked at the Anti-Calendar from the ASSU, but is there a reliable place where I can ask other students who have taken the course?

Frustrated

???????????????

Hey there probably-even-more-frustrated -with- the-delay- of- response

The anti-calendar is probably your best option as that it is student opinions, organized and run by other students. I would also suggest checking ratemyprofessor.com to see if the prof for either is make or break.

<sounds alarms>
Help!!
Has anyone taken either CHM247 or? BCH 311 and can help this brotha/sista out. Post a comment if you have

Peace baby,
Aska

    Since you’re aiming for med school, I would take CHM247 (organic chemistry). Most med schools, if not all, require 1 full credit of organic chemistry. I’m assuming you took CHM138 in your first year so you only have 0.5 FCE of organic chem.

    In terms of difficulty, I’m not sure which one is harder since I’ve taken neither and I have no interest in pursuing med. However, if I remember correctly, BCH311 is taught by Professor Andreopoulous and when I took BCH210 with her, she focused on details. If you decide to take BCH311 with her, STUDY EVERY DETAIL ON THE SLIDES. Everything is fair game as long as it’s on the slides, even if it’s mentioned for 5 seconds.

    I haven’t heard great things about CHM247; apparently the prof teaching it this semester has a really heavy accent and there is a lot of memorization of reactions but again, I haven’t taken the course and I don’t plan on taking it since my program and future plans don’t require it.

    Good luck!
