Flat Fees

flat fee rant … and oedipus

Hi Aska!

Firstly, love your column, always informative and entertaining! My question pertains to the “new” flat fee schedule. I’ve been at UofT as a Part-Time student since 2005 (I know, FOREVER) but I became a full-time student this year. Next year will be my final year (in my world, 6th = 4th) and I was wondering if I would be hit with the new flat fee rule since I’ve exceeded the 4 years exemption allowed for full-time students who enrolled before the decision to switch to a flat fee system?

I know this is probably really a question for my registrar, but you guys are just more fun!

Thanks!

GOOD QUESTION … my god. My dark, damp cave filled with resources (aka google) couldn’t give me a specific answer.

I’ll tell you the thought process we went through:
1) reading your question to my sidekicks, and a lenghtly discussion on your department, student status (ie international student or not) and various other things that we don’t quite know the answer to and that affects what fees you will have to pay.

2) realizing that ifI plotted out the variables of the flat fees on a board it would look like the one from Flash Forward (if you have haven’t seen this show it is worth a day of your life to stream the entire first and only season)

3) wondering if you knew your fate whether or not you could change it or the knowledge would push you to fullfill your destiny anyways

4) obviously concluding with Oedipus …. oooh being destined to kill your papa and makeout with your mama

What I’m getting at is that, despite being honoured that you came to us, your registrar is the only one that can look at your specific variables and give you an accurate answer.

Also anyone who has been bottling up rage about the flat fees. Feel free to express them here because I hear the pressure of exams the bottled up rage lead to some unpretty results.

yours always,

aska
