how much time is full time?

I go to the st george campus. Currently I’m only registered in two F courses, two S courses, and two Y courses. Acorn says my course load is 2.0 a semester. I was wonder what the minimum full time student course load is? I can only seem to find the maximum limit. If I drop one of my year long courses, will i still be a full time student?

    ——————————————

    hi!

the maximum course for the F or S sessions is 3.0 each (which means you’d be in a total of 6 FCEs the whole year).

there isn’t really, technically a minimal amount of courses. you could take just 0.5 FCE and still be a student. the minimum course load to still be a full time student, however, is 3.0 FCE. it’s a little tricky to find (information at u of t isn’t super accessible, unfortunately). you can take a look at this fees schedule (scroll down to the third page) and you can see that part time status begins at 2.5FCE and full time status begins at 3.0FCE during the fall/winter session.

so, if you dropped a Y course, you would still be considered a full time student because you’d have (if i’m doing the math correctly) 3.0FCE left.

something that you should be aware of though, and you can see it from that fees chart, is that if you’re enrolled in 3.5 FCE or less, you are eligible to be charged per course.

    what does that mean?

basically, everyone is charged a flat program fee at the beginning of the year. but if you’re taking less courses, you can be charged for every individual course you take separately. basically… cheaper tuition yay!

to switch from program fees to per course fees, go to this link, sign in with your utorid, and follow the instructions. if, for whatever reason, you can’t do it online, get in touch with your registrar’s office and they should be able to do it for you.

    good luck!

  • Flat Fees

stop flat fees, stay back, dont touch my per course fees

    Hey aska,

    You are wonderful.

I am about to embark next year on the dreaded fifth year at U of T. I have heard several opinions from my fellow students about the following question and I hope you can put it to rest:

Will I have to pay flat fees next year or will I continue paying per class?

I am hoping for the former, so feel free to lie to me!

    Love,

    Hey Bank Zorro,

My super sleuth partner found this ultra informative info:

For the academic years 2011-12 and later
Students admitted 2011-12 to the Faculty of Arts & Science to begin full-time degree studies
will have their academic fees assessed on a program fee basis.

    – Students admitted for full-time study who enrol in 3.0
    – 6.0 full Fall/Winter credits are assessed a program fee.
    – Students admitted 2011-12 to study part-time who enrol in 0.5 – 2.5 full Fall/Winter credits will have their academic fees assessed on a per-course basis.

This program fee policy applies to all students admitted in 2009-2010 with no previous post-secondary experience and all students admitted for degree studies as transfer students from other post-secondary institutions.

Students with a registration in the Faculty of Arts & Science prior to Summer 2009 will have their credits assessed on a per-course basis until the end of the 2013-14 Fall/Winter session or until they graduate, whichever comes first.

Students transferring into the Faculty of Arts & Science from another U of T division, i.e., students with a previous U of T registration will have their fees assessed as though they had a previous registration in Arts & Science, i.e., on a per-course basis.

Fees in the Summer Session will be assessed on a per-course basis.

In a few too many words they are saying that after 2013-2014, everyone will be paying flat fees. So you are in the clear … or are you? You did give me the lying option and I could really be lying in each and every post … or am I lying about lying … or lying about lying about lying … oooor … just kidding.

forever praying for the green in the bank account,

    aska

    drop courses like they’re hot

    Hey aska,

I’m taking a four credit course load right now in my first year. I’m not doing so well, and have already dropped a full year course. I’m not convinced I’m going to pass film, and am considering dropping it as well. My question is this, if I drop film (a full year course), I’ll end up with only 3 credits. At the end of this year, I’ll only be considered a first year still, correct?? Also, with the whole fixed price with 4-5-6 courses, would I get any reimbursement?

    Thanks,

    Bumbled

    yo yo Bumbled,

oooh the first year dropping spree … many go through this.

A first year is considered someone who:

has completed less than 4 full coure equivalents

So yah you’ll still be considered first year.

I personally find this whole program fees a little irrating <shakes fist at the business of university> but I found you some dates,

The Registration Handbook and Timetable states:

October 6 2010: F and Y course load count date for program/per-course fee determination

meaning that you will be charged for any ‘Y’ courses you were enrolled in past October 6th.

    love always,

  • Flat Fees

flat fee rant … and oedipus

    Hi Aska!

Firstly, love your column, always informative and entertaining! My question pertains to the “new” flat fee schedule. I’ve been at UofT as a Part-Time student since 2005 (I know, FOREVER) but I became a full-time student this year. Next year will be my final year (in my world, 6th = 4th) and I was wondering if I would be hit with the new flat fee rule since I’ve exceeded the 4 years exemption allowed for full-time students who enrolled before the decision to switch to a flat fee system?

I know this is probably really a question for my registrar, but you guys are just more fun!

    Thanks!

GOOD QUESTION … my god. My dark, damp cave filled with resources (aka google) couldn’t give me a specific answer.

I’ll tell you the thought process we went through:
    1) reading your question to my sidekicks, and a lenghtly discussion on your department, student status (ie international student or not) and various other things that we don’t quite know the answer to and that affects what fees you will have to pay.

    2) realizing that ifI plotted out the variables of the flat fees on a board it would look like the one from Flash Forward (if you have haven’t seen this show it is worth a day of your life to stream the entire first and only season)

    3) wondering if you knew your fate whether or not you could change it or the knowledge would push you to fullfill your destiny anyways

    4) obviously concluding with Oedipus …. oooh being destined to kill your papa and makeout with your mama

What I’m getting at is that, despite being honoured that you came to us, your registrar is the only one that can look at your specific variables and give you an accurate answer.

Also anyone who has been bottling up rage about the flat fees. Feel free to express them here because I hear the pressure of exams the bottled up rage lead to some unpretty results.

    yours always,

    aska
