Okay, I know someone in their first year at U of T in commerce, and he is busting his butt just to keep up with his studies-I mean, he does nothing else! And he says he is still behind and can’t figure out how everyone is able to go out all of the time and not touch their books. Now, this baffles me too, as I am also a very diligent worker..but I like to play in orchestras and symphonic bands and I dance, etc-am I going to have time or what!??! How do you people do it????? Do you actually study? How are you all even still AT university?? TELL ME YOUR SECRETS NOW BEFORE I START NEXT FALL!
the secret, young jedi, is balance. you need to find the perfect balance for your life. make the marks come first if you actually need a decent GPA to get into second year studies. then experiment with involvement outside your books. start dancing. if your marks are fine, then take up a band or two as well. you’ll get a sense of what is and is not doable. i found that i had lots a free time in first year, but it left me cramming all night and even with an intensive effort the night before a test my marks were luke warm. it’s a lot of work. start out realizing that and you’re ahead of the game. don’t sweat it too much. university isn’t about learning your courses, it’s about finding yourself. take the time to be who you want to be, and don’t be the kid who spends all day everyday with his face in his books. it defeats the real point to being at school.
