Fresh Prince of York? Utm?

Hey aska, this site is amazing and so helpful. I have a question about the Psychology programs at UTm and at UTSG. WHich one is more math based? or harder lets say? I am doing a victory lap and my marks and pretty good except for math. I want a BSC not a BA. ALot of people are telling me to go to York because it is much easier to get into and it specializes for their psychology program.
What is your opinion? i live much closer to Utm and it will be cheaper for me than taking the go bus every day.
thanks a bunch!

Yo yo

I think if you had a gun to my head … i know … intense … I would tell you to go to UTM. Its not often I give blunt answers, but you just seem to bring that out in me. Here’s my reasoning and you are free to ignore it… but it’s good, so don’t.
Below I have included the course requirements for both UTSG and UTM. The only math-ish courses that you will have to take are Stats and Eco. Saying that, those are the requirements for both schools.
Now, if you want to chince out a little (and we all do it), I would chincing by going to UTM and not St.George instead of hauling your ass all the way to York.
First of all U of T is consistantly ranked in the top 20 schools in the world. When you graduate from U of T they don’t emphasize what campus you did so on.
So to enter the major, you must have a 75% in the the Psy100 at the St. George campus and a 63% at the Missisauga one.
Also I’m a little comfused what you are saying about York. U of T does offer a Psych Specialist in Science. Im going to assume its harder to get into than Yorks but probably waaaay better.
Although word on the street is that York students are better looking.

I have a question, I got alternate offer to psychology UTM campus but I want to switch to bio tech or molecular biology after first year. I do not understand how the whole transfer thing works it would be really really informative if you do tell me. One more thing I also understand that psychology is a life science discipline so in my opinion I think it would be easier. And also tell me about the UTM campus ? is first year psychology hard ?

    in response to Khan,

UTM Psych is an easy 4.0 if you do the right thing: pay attention in lectures and study off of past tests. you should also make good notes during from the book or at least review the main concepts in each chapter t/o the year as the exam is a killer if you put off studying for it until the end (160 mc qns in 2 hours, all from textbook). You get a free 4% by doing experiments and another easy 4% for a small lab report (done in partners.) You also have about 8% of free marks just for participating in the labs! So I’d say it’s a fairly easy course for UTM. work hard and you should be able to pull off a decent mark.

    Anyways, about program changes:
everyone at utm has to re-apply to “programs” at the end of first year. at utm (or maybe all uoft campuses) they don’t let you off the hook with just one major. you HAVE to do at least 2 majors, or 1 specialist or 1 major + 2 minors. Biotech + molec. bio are both specialists and so they require more credits. to keep your door open for either, take bio152/153, mat134, chm110/120 as well as psy100 in your first year. if you really want to do molec. bio, i’d recommend you fast track and take the 2nd yr classics course on latin and greek words (CLA201) in 1st yr. also, go in to the registrar/program advisor if you feel like you can handle bio206 in first year. that will help you later on. for biotech, you need managment in first yr as well, but you cannot take that course until you are admitted into the specialist ,so you will need to take management in 2nd yr or later on.

Also, nothing at utm is easy, unless you’re a well rounded individual with a natural talent for one discipline (language arts vs sci vs math) and you choose to pursue only that discipline. What I mean is that even psych as a lifesci, is a hard subject to study at UTM.

The campus itself is nice. small community, you get to know mostly everyone in your classes if you like to socialize. you can get from one end of the campus to the other in 5-7 minutes so you can have a lab right after a lecture and not be late. the deer are a nice addition. campus food is alright. people are generally very nice and helpful.
