I was just looking at the course timetable + calendar, and it looks like psychology is only a half-year course now. (The code is PSY100H1.) Didn’t it used to be a full year course? And is the workload lighter now, or what? because I heard that 1st yr psych is a nightmare, so why did they cut it to only 1/2 a credit?!
also, does this mean I have to go through the calendar and look for another 1/2-year course to take to fill my 5.0 credits? Because I’d really rather not. It’d be great if you could clear up this confusion, thanks!
for this baby, i called up the course coordinator of the new PSY100 program – delightfully named Professor Poppy Lockwood. (isn’t great when people have names you can barely fathom existing? i once met someone named doogle – doogle!.) anyways, she explained that the transition from PSY100 “Y” to PSY100 “F” and “S” is one that the department had been planning on making for quite some time. by breaking up the full year class into 2 half sections, PSY100 material can be digested in smaller, bite-size chunks, therefore sharing the delicious experience of PSY100 with a larger audience.
there are some problems with this transition. the number one problem is that there will be multiple expensive PSY100 textbooks to buy instead of just one. the number two problem is that professor wall (aka the best thing about PSY100) will no longer be teaching the course. i have been told that a new professor will be finalized at the end of july, and that while the major topics will be focused on less in depth, the difficulty level of the class shouldn’t be any easier/harder. also, the classes will be held for 3 hours a week, instead of 2.
change can be good, but change can also be bad. check out the class website for the first section of PSY100 in summer 2006 and decide for yourself. if you have further questions, contact the psychology department here.
