    i’m gone

    Hey aska,
So I’m planning to take a year off from fall 2015 and resume fall 2016. Do you know if my rosi account will be affected in any way/deactivated in my absence? I noticed a ‘reactivate PIN’ option on rosi’s login page so I was wondering if I’d have to do that. Also, will my utorid/webmail and related services (such as MyRes student residence portal) be deactivated?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

nope, your ROSI account will be totally fine. it can take care of itself while you’re away. if you’re away for at least a full calendar year, you’ll have to re-register at your college registrar’s office so that you can enrol in courses and pay your fees, but that is a relatively painless process and shouldn’t take more than a day.

the ‘reactivate PIN’ option is for people who’ve forgotten their PIN and need to reset it so they can get into ROSI. it shouldn’t affect you at all – just make sure you don’t lose your student number/PIN information while you’re away. store that somewhere safe and save yourself a headache when you come back. (though keep in mind that ROSI will be switching to ACORN on June 8th, 2015, and you’ll only need you’re UTORID to log into that. so keep that safe, too).

your UTORID and webmail and MyRes should all stay exactly the same. if you have any problems, you can always contact the help desk at robarts – they’re pretty fab.

    have a cool year off,

    aska

    P.S.

    whoa, there

I started university and I hate it how would I go about dropping it now that I am here

    ———————————————

    hey there,

i’m sorry to hear that you feel that way. i know how awful it can feel to hate something that everyone around you seems to be loving (especially during this week of insufferably optimistic enthusiasm).

however, do keep in mind that it is only frosh week right now. if you’re entering into your first year at uoft, i’d urge you not to make any serious decisions like dropping out this early on in the game.

frosh week is not what the rest of university is like. it’s just a week of shouting and excitement before everyone buckles down to try and study for four years. if you didn’t like frosh, that just means you didn’t like frosh.

i’m not gonna try to tell you what to do. and hey, maybe you didn’t attend orientation, and you’re basing this decision off of something completely different. however, it is still very early on in the game to make this kind of decision.

if i were you, i’d give it some time – at least a week, and then, if you don’t like your courses, you can go to your registrar’s office and make an appointment to talk about your options.

you can discuss the possibility of dropping out entirely, changing your courses around, changing programs, transferring universities, taking time off, or doing whatever it is that’s right for you.

to sum up, this is how you drop out: 1) stick around a bit and 2) go to your registrar’s office.

    cheers,

    aska

    give me back my money!

    Hello!

I am currently a part-time student at UofT. Unfortunately my mind isn’t concentrated on school at all and it has been reflected in my marks. I’ve been thinking about dropping out for some time off. If I were to drop my courses for the winter semester, would I get a complete 100% refund? I know there are incidental/campus fees on top of tuition fees that don’t amount to much, but I was wondering if those charges would be dropped as well if I dropped my courses on Rosi. (Is that how I’d go about this? Just dropping my courses on Rosi? I should probably speak to my registrar right?).

Thanks for your help! I appreciate your help.

    ———————————————

    hey there,

questions about refunds and things are HIGHLY SPECIFIC and vary based on the case, so before i say anything, here’s my offishul disclaimer that this is a lot of generalization and that – as you rightly said – you should HURRY YOUR TUSH over to your college’s registrar’s office to see how much exactly you can expect to be refunded. y’all know my refrain of “GTF TO YOUR REGISTRAR’S OFFICE” now – i like that.

basically though, if you’re a part-time student for just one term, you are going to have under 3.0 credits finished in this academic year, which means you are eligible to be charged per course. meaning that you don’t have to pay the upfront program fee that makes all of us and our bank accounts cry; you’ll just have to pay the few hundred dollars per course that you completed in the fall. so no, you won’t get ALL your money back, but you won’t have to pay for any courses you didn’t take. capice? good.

oh, and yes, drop your courses on rosi. obvi.

but like i said, like you said, like everyone knows to say, obey the timeworn phrase: talk to your registrar. they will know the specifics of your situation and all the details that an internet joe like myself couldn’t possibly.

    xoxo,

    aska

    farewell forever, uoft!

how does one drop out? are there fees involved?

    ———————————————

    Nope, no fees! 😀

Dropping out is actually incredibly simple: you just don’t enrol in classes.

After that, you’ll eventually become “financially cancelled” for the fall/winter session since you haven’t technically paid your fees, but by that time you’ll be elsewhere giving absolutely no shits about university.

Now I assume you’re talking about dropping out for next year, so note that although ROSI has automatically charged you $7000+, as long as you don’t enrol in anything, it’ll eventually go away.

    Cheers!
