I live in Mississauga, and want to know the pros/cons of taking a program offered downtown (st. george) at the erindale campus. to be specific, this program is biochemistry. thx
#1 do you want to live in mississauga next year, and the year after, and henceforth until you graduate?
#2 do you want to commute to downtown every day, or pay $600+ for an apartment near campus, or live in a res with the people you see at every lecture lab and tutorial?
if you go to utm, you can take courses downtown. there is a shuttle going to and from both of the “other” (we call them the “freak” at st george) campuses about 78 times a day. there are definately benefits to utm. it’s in mississauga, which means children and dogs, two things notably absent from st george. it also means . . . bad bars? and what university student doesn’t need a bad bar in his or her life?
the campus is smaller, the population is smaller which means a higher teacher to student ratio. so you’re still a number, there is just fewer of you. easier access to library cubicles.
when it comes to biochem, the program is offered at utm. generally, the acceptance average is lower at the other campuses, so if that’s a concern, you should check out the difference. for some programs it’s something ridiculous like 5% lower. the utm biochem dept doesn’t have a link on the utm website, but you can email the main page with your questions. or go to the main uoft biochem website here or better yet go there if you live in mississauga, the biochem dept will have pamphlets and propaganda luring you into their program. also go here for the utm website. there is admissions and programs and student life and maps and other bureaucratic crap. they make it sound real great.
finally, if you really hate utm, or mississauga, or living with your parents when you are 24 and are trying desperately to graduate, you can transfer to st george after you get five or ten or fifteen credits. but remember, even though the burbs suck, the chuds live downtown.
cheers,
