can you write your way out of a knuckle sandwich?

I’m in my first year & taking humanities/social sciences (no decisions re:majors tho)..and I’m really interested in taking some creative writing courses..but u of t seems to have an extreme defecit of them! I am not really interested in majoring in English, but I’d still love to do some creative work…is it possible to take courses at other universities (say, like..YORK..i know, the enemy) and earn credits towards a u of t degree?

yeah, you’re right. UofT doesn’t like to give marks for creativity.
there are various things that you can do. transfer credits are your first option, sometimes iffy because uoft doesn’t accept all credits (high and mighty). also check out athabasca university, which offers distance education opportunities. basically every course they offer is available via correspondence, because who in their right mind would move to athabasca?? you are allowed to transfer a limited number of credits in this way, and there are lots of restrictions. my advice is to find a course, print out the course description and any other information you can get on it, including reading lists, and bring it down to your friendly neighbourhood registrar’s office, who will refer you to the proper authorities to advise you how to go about getting credit for the work you want to do. do it before you take the course though, unless you don’t care if it counts towards or not, because these things are iffy, as i said. you can research other universities in the same method. please do it too … maybe UofT will take the hint when their students have to go elsewhere for classes and begin to ask us what it is we are interested in studying.
cheers,
