was looking in the calendar at second year courses…and what do they mean when they say survey course?
survey courses are classes that take material into a broad scope. so your history of modernism class with that alcoholic professor is one that refuses to get into great detail about the subject but hits all the basics of the topic (i.e. faulkner, picasso, WW1, etc.)
most classes in the lower years tend to be survey courses. they will address basic or common themes of a topic or discipline, but can’t go into one thing in specific detail. that experience is reserved for your upper years – when you’ll be able to take extremely frightening seminars about the death of the artist and be skewered intellectually by your peers by your insights on Foucault. yikes.
