It’s ROSI Time!

Hi Askastudent,

I am a life science student that is looking for an easy half courses that falls under the
category of humanities? I am looking for something that is either a 100 or 200 and want
to avoid writing as much as possible (it may be inevitable). Currently, I am looking at
LIN 203H1 (English Words) and CLA 201H1 (Scientific Terms in Latin and Greek). What is
your opinion on these courses and can you suggest anything else?

This is what I?ve heard about both courses:

LIN 203H1 is a trick. It?s a lot of work and people hated it. Linguistics is really brutal and time consuming and full of memory work. Also, there?s no trace of it in the Anti-Calendar. I would avoid this one like the plague.

CLA 201H1 is a big hit with life science students, like you! A friend of a friend found this one easy and really helpful because he could bring it back to his major field of study. Also, you?ll be able to break down words into their Latin roots. Which is cool. ?in my opinion, anyway.

The list of other Humanities courses for Life Science students is on pages 27-30 in your course calendar, or CLICK HERE!

Yeah, no linguistics courses for “fun.” They’re interesting, but pretty labour-intensive.

    I suggest taking PHL246.

246 is literally dumbed-down high school data management. This is a statistics course that for some strange reason gives you a humanities distribution credit.
    There are no assignments.

The key to passing this course is basically not getting engrossed by the wording of the professor on tests. The tests and exam are pretty straight forward. tests are only a page long and have roughly 5 questions. These qustions count for a lot. Just make sure to look at past tests and exams.

Their is only 1-2 essay(s) in the entire course. (It is)/(They are) in the exam. You have a selection of topics to choose from. Any topics that repeat in past exams for more than one year have a VERY good chance of appearing again.

If you already know statistics, don’t be afraid to mention theorems (ie. central-limit) and such on the exam
Just don’t over do it (ie. regression analysis) or the marking TA will hate you and give you a low mark for mentioning “information not relevant to the course’s material / scope” or something along those lines.

In the course calendar, phl245 is recommended. This recommendation is misleading.

The scope of phl245 is deductive logic (ie. Our conclusion is either true or false, depending on our given premises that are also either true or false).

The scope of phl246 is inductive logic (ie. what is the likelihood of something being true or false? We don’t actually know if it’s true or false. We only know how many times we’ve seen it come true/false OR we simply assign a number to our ‘belief’ of it being true/false).

245 covers the basis of mathematical logic, 246 covers the basis of probabilistic reasoning.

The only time either course can help in the other occurs in the first week of lectures. They state exactly what I just stated. I hope this helped.

Expect a mark in the 70’s range if you have prior (knowledge of)/(exposure to) statistics/probability, respectively, and leave stuff to the last three days. Else expect 60’s or lower.

You will most likely raise the class average of this class if you’re coming from a life sci background (you do probability in your bio labs)
