why does commerce make our lives so difficult?

i got accepted into sciences while i am really planning to go into commerce…don’t even ask me why i didn’t hestitate to apply to science in the first place… I talked to the counsellor and they told me I would
have to re-apply for commerce now and they will cancel my acceptance for science, or I can try to compete with millions of others when I register my course for commerce courses this year and try even harder to ace all of them to declare major next year. They also have made it very clear all those options they just told me aren’t really options ‘cuz it’s just too diffucult.
So does that mean I’m going to be stuck with science for the rest of my life? Or do i have to waste one year taking something I don’t think I like too much? I really can’t stand the boredom chemistry provides
me…and i’m very bad with physics and calculus…in every way i don’t see myself doing well in science…though i was seriously considering to do studies relating to bio-weapons or clonging…
Or can I take commerce courses in recognized colleges in Toronto and transfer the credits i earn there to U of T to apply for commerce next year? If so, what colleges there are that might be a good choice?
last little question…….is the regisration date on August 1st or something? Is it all the same for everybody in U of T, or it depends on your average ?

while i am not sure what clonging is, i definitely feel your pain. it’s hard to decide when you’re so young what you actually want to do vs what your parents/guidance counsellors/mentors think would be “good” for you to do. as a vet of the war of academic indecision, i have a few nuggets of advice for you:
1. if you’re not strong in calculus, perhaps you’d want to re-evaluate your choice of commerce as that is a very mathematics-intensive course.
2. don’t take commerce courses at a different school solely in the hopes of transferring them to UofT because transfer credits can be difficult to secure and UofT doesn’t always recognize high marks at other
schools as being on-par with high marks at this institution…in keeping with the overall elitist attitude that most of the faculty and student body adheres to.
3. if you work hard enough in eco100h, mgt120h (in the second part of the year) and either mat133y or mat135y, and your marks are top-notch, you should be in a pretty competitive place to get in to the program. i don’t know what gpa will be needed at the end of 1st year to get into the commerce p.o.s.t (program of study) but what your counsellor was probably alluding to is the fact that enrolling in such a p.o.s.t without having been originally accepted into the commerce program out of high school will be difficult because the department is restricting admission of such students and thus forcing the minimum gpa higher with each year. it is possible that the commerce program will make public this magical number soon, and so i advise you to check out their website and contact them if any of this is unclear or contradictory to what you may have heard before.
4. you may want to contact someone at the commerce students’ union and s/he might be able to give you more student/commerce-specialized advice.
5. the enrollment date (which is what i think you mean) goes by year. you are a 1st year and everyone who is also in your year, regardless of their averages, can start enrolling in courses on august 1st. (hmmm, 1st for 1st years? another weird coincidence? or maybe now i am looking too hard?)

please write back if this appears to be a muddled explanation or i am completely out of my head…and good luck, the stress that we’re under is often downplayed but the choices are always real (wow! how contrived did that sound?)

cheers,
