    je suis confus

    Hey Aska,

Two years ago I took FSL121Y1 and then last year I continued with french and took FSL221Y1. Now When I look at degree navigator, it for some reason does not count FSL221Y1 as part of my 20 courses because it says that it is an exclusion to FSL121. If the course does not count I won’t be able to graduate this year since I will be short one course. It however, makes no sense because you need to take FSL121 in order to be able to enrol in FSL221.

    Thanks for your help,

    Sooo confused.

    ———————————————

    Hey confused!

That’s super wack! And rightfully unnerving. But don’t worry, it ain’t you, it ain’t me, it’s the degree navigator. FSL121Y1 is only an exclusion if you’ve taken FSL221Y1 first, but not the other way around (logically). Unfortunately, one of the degree navigator’s most prominent glitches is that it can’t always recognize chronology, and so it’s giving you a false alarm because it doesn’t know the order in which you took those courses.

When time comes to request graduation, you should be fine. But if you’re worried, shoot an email to the French Department just to confirm.

    Bonne chance!

a little bit of science, a little bit of arts

Heya Aska,I’m a second year student currently enrolled in a double major in Neuroscience and Environmental Science, but I am considering switching the Enviro major for an Economics major. If I choose to do so, will I still graduate with a Bsc?Thanks for your wisdom,
    Contemplative Student

    ?????????????????????

    Why hello there Contemplative Student,

If you have one Arts major and one Science, the system will automatically give you a Bsc buuuut, you actually get to choose which one you would like to graduate with.

They figure if you put in the smarty pants science effort in, that Bsc is what you would choose to have on your diploma. If you decide otherwise, just let your college registrar’s office know.

    Happy diverse education!

err … title about graduating …yah

    HI Aska
Thanks for your amazing website. I have two quick questions. I’m in my third year and have only finished 12 credits so far, so there is no way I
can graduate by the end of next school year unless I take summer school both this year and next year.I was wondering if I can still graduate in
June if I take a summer intensive course next summer, meaning that I will finish my 20.0 credits on June 1st and will graduate between June 5-21st when they hold the ceremonies. If not, will they at least give me my degree right away so that I can go to grad school without wasting one year?

Thanks for all your helps 😛

    ??????????????????????-

    Hey hey,

A simple answer to your first question is … no. While the classes for an intensive course end on June 1st this year, the exams end on June 8th and the dates could be different next year. Meaning convocation could theoretically occur before you finish. But mainly you can’t request?June?graduation based off of summer courses.

You will not receive your degree right when you finish your last credit. You don’t receive your degree (both on your transcript and that little peice of paper) until conovocation (the actual cermony) which will be in November(too many brackets in one sentence?) Here are some options that grad school might accept:

    1) An official transcript- this will prove?that you have taken the amount of credits to graduate

    2) Once you have requested graduation, the Faculty of Arts & Science can write you a letter of your intent to graduate

    3) You can also get similar letters from each?program department to prove?you have your program requirements

    mmmkay?

    love de love,

1, 2, 3, 4 tell me that i need no more (credits, that is)

Hey :)I recently declared my intention to graduate this year on ROSI; after I double checked and made sure I have 20 credits and fulfilled my
requirements for my double majors (of course!). I am just not sure what happens now – what is the graduation process? I checked the registrar’s
website where it states final confirmation letters will be sent out in late May. But that seems too close to graduation doesn’t it? After the intention
of graduation is declared on ROSI, how soon will the registrar’s office know that a student has fulfilled the graduation requirements? I would like
to call/bother them in advance to see if I have the green-light.Thanks in advance for answering my question.

    Good luck and don’t trip,

    aska

    ———————————————

    Heyo graduate/soon-to-be-graduate,

You can actually call your registrar’s office and make an appointment with an academic advisor. There are advisors whose job is specificallly to deal with graduating students, and? check to see if they are prepared to graduate. Unfortunately the only other reason why you would be contacted prior to that letter is if you are missing requirements.

This webstie actually has the hoe down low down on convocation.

    it’s not working out

    Hi Aska!
I’m graduating in June. When do my Hart House and Athletics Centre
    memberships expire?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

    Hello sporty one,

Basically once ROSI understands that you have graduated in the system (I’m sure you have already requested graduation and requested convocation tickets by now), all the bells and whistles of a U of T education will be lost to you. That means that you probably only have a few weeks before convocation to swipe that Tcard, my friend. If you ever register in another class as a non-degree student, you will be able to use the Hart House Gym and AC again. But now, a recet grad membership to Hart House costs $34 a month. More deets can be found here.

    Hi,

I was just wondering whether someone is graduating with high distinction/distinction will be listed on something (pamphlet) for public viewing during the graduation or rather just listed on the degree? Thank you!

    ———————————————

    Dear Mr. Vain,

It’s not enough for you just to know that you’re highly distinguished? You need proof on some kind of mega plaque or giant LCD screen for everyone to know?

I’m really sorry but I don’t think that anything particularly cool happens for those who graduate with high distinction during the ceremony. Maybe you are listed in the program? Maybe when your name is announced they’ll say you are super cool? Maybe it will be listed on the degree?

You can definitely brag about it on your resume, and harness the power to get you through your bleak post-graduate life where distinction comes from being the person who can work the photocopier the best.

    Congrats though.

    size does matter

    Hello,

My main concern with U of T St. George is its size. Is it really so big that you feel like a visitor? Is it impossible / extremely difficult to get to
    know professors / TA’s well?

And also, how would a school as large as U of T go about choosinga valedictorian (lol…)

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

When you first step onto the massive St George campus and go to your 300 person class, you will feel a little overwhelmed. By your second year you will start to experience smaller classes and realize that your TAs are fully accessable. As your classes get smaller your profs will be able to offer more one on one relationships.

I remember driving to the campus, ending up in Little Italy and being late for classes because the numbering of the buildings in Kings Circle are confusing. NOW I know all the secret passages behind the statues in UC and the closet in Knox that takes you to another land far, far away from studying.

The visitor feel does go away as you start to realize that you?really only use certain parts of the campus and start to have smaller classes.

So here is what goes down at convocation. There is no valedictorian for undergraduate arts and science graduation. Engineering and commerce might be a little different (as they always are). Sorry bud, maybe just storm on stage and bust out a speech anyways (if you get arrested I didn’t suggest it; if you get a standing ovation, I get a beer)

Has anyone else noticed that Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka looks a lot like Michael Jackson?

    73. There are more cardboard figures than actors on screen.

The game ends when a bunch of Ewoks start dancing. No matter what you’ve been drinking, you will remember this image. The last person to give up drinking on each cue is the winner. Of course, ties are possible. If at some point you find that no one can successfully operate the VCR anymore, the game may as well be abandoned.

    Special!!!!

And especially for those non-drinkers, there is:

THE STAR WARS DRINKING GAME FOR MORMONS

The rules are basically the same as the other game but the drinking cues are different.

    HARRY POTTER (aka degree requirements)

    Hi Aska,
Im a 3rd year student at UTSG with a double major in Economics and Stats. I met the entry requirement for Eco major and enrolled in it, which is 67% in eco100 and 2.0 gpa. Do I need to maintain that GPA in order to graduate? Can I still graduate with a CGPA of under 2.0? Thanks for your time.

    ??????????????

    Whaddup,

Nah man you’re good to go. Once your enrolled in the Major, you don’t need to maintain the required entry CGPA, unless it is stated (which it’s not for the Eco Major)

Technically you can graduate with a CGPA under 2.0, but you would definitely be pushing it. Here’s what the Holy Book (ie Course Calendar) says:

” Obtain a Cumulative GPA of 1.85 or more by the time of graduation. Students who meet all the requirements for the Hon.B.A./Hon.B.Sc. except for the GPA requirement may elect to graduate with a B.A./B.Sc. degree provided they are In Good Standing (i.e., CGPA is 1.50 or more) ”

Personally I would aim to go above the 1.85, spending 4 grueling years at this school deserves an honours degree.

    Yours forever and always,

    two degrees, one student

I so lost right now. I got accepted into the general social science program at UTSC and now Im planning to do a double major in psychology and sociology, but can I even do that cause the two are from different fields of study, ones BSc and ones BA. If so, which degree would I get?

    ———————————————

Hey there our newest social sciencer,

You definitely allowed to have majors in two different fields. ACTUALLY, to graduate from U of T you need either a Specialist, two Majors or a Major and two Minors.
Here’s the kick though, when graduating you will have to choose which degree you want; so either your BSc or BA.

This question seems quite popular, here’s the link to it being answered previously.

If you’re feeling a bit lost, stop by your registrars office and they can help you out.

that’s a degree with a lot of “bs”

Hey hello! I was just wondering about something I read in one of the U of T course guides, when I was in first year. It said that Arts and Science students can decide if they want to graduate with an Honours BSc or an Honours BA.

Is this true? and if so, Is it possible to get the BSc if I am doing an economics and psychology double major? ( the psych is science and eco is social science)

Is it also possible to get the BSc if i do the Eco major and poli sci and psych minors?

Please let me know! Thanks a lot 🙂

    ???????????????

Why it’s true! Isn’t that so great? U of T will give you the sexy, exhilarating option of choosing between a Honours BSc or Honours BA if you have the same amount of courses for both majors. It’s like choosing between chocolate and vanilla! Both are so delicious! Here is the calendar backing me up as proof:

    Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science

Effective for all students registered for the first time in a degree program in the Faculty of Arts & Science for the summer 2001 session and thereafter, the St. George Campus of the Faculty has discontinued the 15 course (three-year) B.A. and B.Sc. degrees. Students registered in a degree program in the Faculty before Summer 2001 may still choose a 15-course (three-year) degree; these students should consult their college registrar?s office.

Students with a B.A. or B.Sc. who return to upgrade that degree to an Hon. B.A. or Hon. B.Sc. must exchange the B.A. or B.Sc. for an Honours degree. A B.A. leads only to an Hon. B.A.; a B.A. CANNOT be upgraded to an Hon. B.Sc., and a B.Sc. CANNOT be upgraded to an Hon. B.A. Students who upgrade to an Honours degree are not eligible to attend the convocation ceremony for the upgrade.

Different degree regulations apply to students who first registered in the Faculty before Winter Session 1992; these students should consult their College Registrar.

Since the economics and psychology majors both require seven courses to obtain, you are good as gold, my friend. However, if you do the economics major with a double minor in poli sci and psych, you will be stuck with a plain old Honours BA, which as everyone knows IS MADE FOR SUCKERS.

It’s your choice. Have your degree your way.

  • graduation

so we talked all night about the rest of our lives

Just curious, when and how are we notified that we have been found eligible to graduate by our faculty?

    —————————————————-

You aren’t notified that you’re able to graduate at all. What you have to do if you want to graduate is request graduation on ROSI. Then, and ONLY then, your college registrar will look over the courses you’ve taken during your years at UofT, and determine whether or not you’re eligible to graduate. You may want to make sure you’re on the right track by scheduling regular appointments with your registrar before graduation date. You don’t want to be the kid in your year that couldn’t graduate because you didn’t know you couldn’t graduate with three minors…

Anyway, the point is, no one will tell you when you’re eligible to graduate. You don’t even have to graduate if you don’t want to. You can stay behind and take more courses. Theoretically, you could stay at UofT and take one course per year for twenty years, and request graduation then.

two tickets to the paper/polyester party, please

I’m nearing my graduation, which raises some questions:

    1. How does UofT organize graduating classes? ie. do we graduate with people from our
colleges, or can we pick a day we want to graduate from a selection of dates? Does my
family have to pay to see me walk up in a polyester robe to pick up a $30,000 piece of
    paper?

    2. How many students actually graduate in 4 years or less? How many go on to do a fifth
    year?

    Thanks.

    ———————————————————

The website to check out is this one. There are two main dates that you can pick for convocation, as you?ll be able to find on the site: June, and November. People generally graduate on the first available date. For most people, this is June. If you choose to graduate in November, you’ll have to pay special attention to when grad photos are being taken (usually in January).

Obviously, your parents will need to pay to see you graduate. Convocation hall is a pretty small place, you know, and they can?t fit everybody in. The tickets will cost you 100 bucks per piece. That?s another 100 or 200 bucks they?re gonna be spending for more useless pieces of paper.

?Actually, I lied. Sorry. I just couldn?t resist. What?s that? No, I swear, I?m not a compulsive liar!

You actually get two free guest tickets. With them, you can bestow the honour of seeing you graduate upon whomever you like. Aw, isn?t that great? If you need more tickets, there?s unfortunately no easy way of getting them, except maybe if your best friend doesn?t need all of his/hers or something. Even better, note that webcasts of the convocations which are posted up every year. That way, your friends can watch you graduate from the comfort of their own home and without the constrictive-ness of (formal) clothing!

Oh yeah, you will have to pay for things like photos, class composites, borrowing the pretty polyester robe for the ceremony? and so on. See?! I didn?t REALLY lie.

For more information, try browsing around the site and the FAQ included there. Also, make sure to talk to your college registrar about it ASAP, as they are the ones that actually organize the convocation ceremony.

One last thing – if you’re a commerce student, you’ll get the choice as to whether you want to graduate with the other commerce peepz or the other students from your college.

As for your second question, my registrar guesses 10-15%, though no official statistics are kept. It?s not that uncommon; I?ve heard many of my friends do it. It?s good that you?re keeping that option open to yourself. Just don?t be intimidated by people who tell you that you must graduate in four years, or you?re a failure. There?s no harm in taking a fifth year ? you might never get the chance to be an undergraduate again, so here?s your chance! In fact, it might even be beneficial for you if it?ll allow you to broaden your horizons by completing another major or minor program. Even if you just end up taking extra courses in your field, it?ll probably increase your level of maturity in the field and give you an idea of what you may want to work on in the future.

Generally, most people choose to graduate in the June session, though there?s nothing wrong with graduating in the November session, especially if you have to pick up a few summer classes or something.
