    the limiting laws of probation

    hello

I have a question regarding academic probation. If you’re placed on academic probation by the university, can you still apply for OSAP?

How many courses can you take in a year if you are on academic probation?

    ?????????

    Yo.

Oh, another probation question. I assume that now that everyone is seeing their CGPA’s on ROSI and loosing their sh!t over their standings (e.g. “on probation,” “suspended for one year,” etc.), they come straight to aska > their registrar’s office — who, be tea dubs, if you’re on probation (or suspended) will probably be contacting you shortly to have some soul-searching convos.

So yes, you can still apply for OSAP, assuming you didn’t screw up their conditions of having to pass at least 60% of your course load, particularly three courses per term. But even if you did, you’d just be on OSAP probation, which just calls for a letter with your application explaining your past problems, but that’s neither here nor there so don’t worry about it!

And once you’re ON academic probation, the number of courses you can take is–

Well see I’m not really supposed to disclose that. BUT, if you ARE on probation, you’ll be receiving a letter from the Dean shortly explaining what your limitations are in terms of courses et al.

But if we had to guess, I’d assume the course limit would be soooomewhere around the typical course load or less. I’d also guess that they definitely wouldn’t let you do something as dumb as take 6.0 full credits, so there will probably be a cap there somewhere. Somewhere about 5.0. Not too sure. Like I’m not saying it’s 5.0… but I haven’t haven’t seem anyone on probation take more than 5.0. Ahem.

    Cheers!

block questions scare me – return of the block questions

Hi! Im a first year at UofT
I’m asking yet another question about academic probation which I have been freaking out about since the exam cram session in March/April.
I have yet to be notified that I am on probation. Is no news good news? I may just be insecure and think I’m going to be placed on probation. Anyways, if I am on probation, I have read countless times that I will be put on good standing if I have a cumulative GPA of 1.50 or higher, or less then 1.50 CGPA and a 1.70 annual GPA.
First off, I know this may sound stupid and ignorant, but I really really don’t know. What exactly is a 1.50 GPA in percentage (of average) because on the websites I’ve checked it says a 1.30 is a 57-59 and then 1.70 is 60-62. Well where is the 1.50? Is this a really stupid question?
Also, since I am a first year, and I know a CGPA means my average overall including every course I have taken and annual means only in one term, Well If I’m on probation with a CGPA of less then 1.50, for my first year, then that means that my last term didn’t go well either, or I wouldn’t be on probation, right? So that rule cannot apply to me. So I must raise my CGPA to a 1.50.
I am taking two summer courses. I know this may seem ill advised but I need them to get into the program that I want to, and they are an extension of an intro course I took this year and I did pretty good on it, and I really like it. I’ pretty confident I can pull it off.
    That is all,
    Thanks!

    ?????????

    Yo.

No news isn’t necessarily good news. At this point, CGPAs have yet to be added up/put on ROSI, so while you may very well be in good standing, you can also be in probation.

The best way to figure this out though is to use this GPA calculator graciously given to us by UTSC to figure out what you’ve ended the year with. And just note, to avoid any confusion, that since you’re in first year, your CGPA and annual GPA are going to be the same thing.

Now a 1.49 (because let’s just stick with that since it’s our concern) is tricky to define, but if you want it in percentage, I guess it’s around 59 or so? I know, things are a huge pain because of that lack of clear equivalent of a 1.49 between the 1.3 and 1.7 bit, but basically if you have all your grades, jot down their grade point values, and then add up the values. Then divide sum by number of courses. Then voila, your CGPA. Just don’t forget that Y courses have double the weight of H courses!

Annnnnd uhhhh I don’t really understand what you’re asking me in the second chunk of questions, but annual, to be clear, means yearly. So it refers to the GPA of both the fall and winter semesters combined. But long story short, yeah, your CGPA needs to be 1.50 or over? to be in good standing.

    As in not on probation.

    And then summer courses.

    Oh, summer courses…

If you’re in a place where you’re afraid of being on probation, there’s a good chance that you are. I don’t mean to be harsh, but it’s best to be realistic. If that’s the case, summer courses are NOT a good idea, largely because they’re accelerated. You’re doing twice as many readings as you normally do and you can very well have a midterm or essay due in your second week of class.

Whatever program you’re looking at will be around next year, but if you don’t meet the requirements to pull you out of probation at the end of summer, you certainly won’t be.

Again, I’m not saying that to be harsh. Summer school can be a bit of a hit or miss situation, and if you’ve been missing all year or barely hitting — hence the probation possibility — summer school could very well lead you to suspension.

Anyway, if you ARE on probation, you’ll see that on ROSI by the end of the month when your sparkling CGPA tells you everything. Likewise, you’ll be mailed a letter from the Faculty explaining your probation, and you’ll be contacted by your college to discuss… things.

    Best of luck though!

  • CR/NCR,  probation

does ncr count because there’s no credit

    Hi there,

So I am in first year, and my cumulative GPA is 1.35 – I received 3 credits, and I did Cr/Ncr for one of my other courses which I received no credit as I failed it.. my question is will I be put on probation? I am freaking out right now.. I know for a fact I will be put on probation but Im just hoping that maybe just maybe because I only 3 credits, I won’t be put on probation.. and if I am put on it, what steps do I need to take in order to get myself out of it? Thank you so much for your help!

    ?????????

    Hey hey,

Sooooooo I hate to be the bearer of bad news buuuuut you’re kind of sort of on probation. Your ROSI account probably doesn’t say so yet, but when the GPAs get added up and become ~*~official~*~ your standing will say “Probation.”

    Sorry bro!

See, while you didn’t receive a credit for that one course you failed, you DID still see it through and got some sort of “grade” in it. Meaning you are designated some kind of standing. Mean probation. 🙁

BUT, that’s okay! It’s not the end of the world, so keep your chin up. All this means is that you need to step up your game. Now students on probation are cautioned against summer classes (or, at least, taking too many of them), so if you’re one of those crazies that dislike the beach and Thirsty Thursday and you’re in 2.0 FCE for the summer session, best… like not.

Now to get OFF of probation, you need to get a CGPA of at least 1.50 or higher in your next session (so like next year). If your CGPA is less than 1.50 and your annual GPA is 1.70 or higher, then you stay on probation. BUT, if your CGPA is less than 1.50 and your annual GPA is less than 1.70, then you’ll be put on suspension. There’s this totally awesome flowchart that explains all of this stuff and that I will probably be referencing like 2374595867 times in the next month, so take a look at that. Visuals are always super fun for explaining things! 😀

    block questions scare me

Hi, I am a first year student at uoft st.george and am currently (and have been for a while) freaking out over my grades. First semester was great but for some reason second semester has been much harder for me, probably because I took on more courses. My grades aren’t the best, but they aren’t the worst either. I’m passing in everything (and important question: what is ‘passing’ exactly at uoft? My friend said its a 65-68! Then I am not passing in everything!) I think I did well in most of my exams though I’m really scared for the last one I have tomorrow! What if I bomb? I guess the point of this message is that I’m really scared for academic probation. I have read a ton on it but am still a little confused. I am already signed up for 2 courses this summer. When will I know that I am on probation, at the end of this semester in April, or at the end of summer. If April, then can’t I just raise my GPA to the requirement over the summer and be put on Good Standing (what average do you need to be out of Good Standing and, you know, all clear?)and take my regular courses in September? But if i need to enroll in courses in July/August, wont this really hurt me, since I can only enroll in 2.0 courses? And if probation is calculated after summer session, could I possibly be all clear granted I do well in my courses?

This just sucks big time and I have myself to blame, because of this I couldn’t get into the program that I wanted so I need to be on top game for next year so I can reapply for third year. This is going to be all messed up if I get put on probation but its all on me 🙁

    ?????????

    Hey!

Are you sure you’ve read a ton? Because it’s really not that difficult…. granted, if that were the case, I’d be out of business so I guess it really is a pain to read. Hm.

Anyway, firstly, passing = 50%. You friend was probably talking his/her own standards of passing.

Next…. oh, academic probation. Okay, so as stated many, many times, academic probation happens when you fail to achieve a CGPA of at least 1.50.?Now being placed on probation is all apart of your academic standing being assessed, something that happens when you’ve taken at least 4.0 FCE and at the end of an academic session, so either in mid-May after the Fall/Winter session or in late-August after the Summer session. Make sense?

This means that no, there will be no “raising your GPA over the summer” to fix what will be assessed for this year. That’s a separate session.

But you’ll know your standing soon enough. GPAs will be calculated/put up on ROSI in the next few weeks.

If you DO end up on probation, however, this won’t necessarily affect your summer courses, but it WILL make things a little more daunting in that if you screw up those courses you’re in right now, you can potentially get yourself suspended. To get OFF of academic probation you’ll have to finish the next session (that being the summer one since you’re taking courses in it) with a CGPA of 1.50 ?or get an annual GPA of 1.70. But don’t worry about these tidbits until you find out your standing!

If you do end up on probation, I recommend against taking too many summer courses. I’d hate to see your block of questions on suspension. 😉

    it’s like a cow’s question — it doesn’t matter

    hello,
I had a question on academic probation. This academic session I finished with below a 1.60 gpa and with 3 f.c.e but one of the courses was a credit/no credit so will i still be put on academic probation (since technically I do not get a mark for one of those credits)?

    ?????????

    Yo.

    That’s a very good question!

So let’s go over the basics: you’re put on academic probation when you fail to get a CGPA of at least 1.50 after completing 4.0 FCE.

While technically you didn’t get a grade for that course you made CR/NCR, you still got a credit for it and saw it out til the end soooooo well, unforunately, it counts toward your count. Actually, I feel like the university’s dealt with questions like this before because there’s a little note in the calendar that says:

“Achieved final standing” applies to courses in which a student remains formally enrolled on the last date for cancellation, unless the academic penalty normally attached to a later cancellation is removed by petition. This includes CR/NCR, but does not include courses with LWD or WDR.

tl;dr = if you get 4.0 FCE, even if one of them is a CR, you can still end up on probation.

BUT, rereading your question, I notice you say you’ve only got 3.0 FCE so…… well, all of this is moot.

    Cheers!

why don’t we just ignore that extra course over there…

Hello, to be on academic probation, is your overall gpa calculated or just your gpa for 4 courses? I took 5 full year courses and think I failed one.

    ?????????

    Hey hey

That would be great if we could just ignore that one random course that we regret taking and that totally drags down our average?

But unfortunately, you?re put on academic probation when your CGPA is below 1.5. Meaning it’s cumulative. Meaning it takes everything into account. Meaning all five of your courses will be considered, not just the non-failed four.

    Later days!

  • probation,  UTSC

can i just pass on the probation?

I’m a second year student at UTSC. I was put on academic probation second semester of my first year. Failed 1/6 0.5 courses, others just poor marks. I thought I had this past semester in the bag but apparently not and I know my sessional GPA will be below 1.6 even though I passed my 3 0.5 courses this semester. Will I for sure be put on academic suspension?

    Thanks

    ———————————————

    Hey there!

Okay so this is how it works for you:

    • If your GPA for this session is at least 1.6, your probation will simply continue.
    • If your CGPA is at least 1.6, your probation will be cleared and you’ll be put “in good standing.”
    • If your GPA for this session is below 1.6, then you will be put on suspension.

So if you can’t manage that 1.6 this semester, then yes, you will be suspended. I recommend meeting with your registrar to work out some kind of plan of action. Maybe drop a course you’re in now to concentrate harder on the other ones? It’s not just enough to pass when you’re on probation. Your aim is to do a lot better to raise your CGPA.Good luck!aska

there is no pleasure in probation

    Hey,

I’m a first year student at utsc and i’m doing really bad in school at the moment. I fear that i will be put on probation and i don’t want that. I just wanted to know that do the decide if you go on probation first semester or after second semester at the end of the year?

    ?????????

    Hey hey!

Okay so for starters, you don?t choose probation. No one chooses probation. No one wants to be on probation. Ever.

At UTSC, probation is the result of you getting less than a 1.6 GPA after attempting at least 3.0 FCE. This means that you won?t be put on probation until the end of this academic year in April. This also means that you have time to pull up your grades! You have plenty of time to make some changes, so stick around in the library, do all your readings, and maybe learn some things with academic advising.

You have time, so use it wisely!

    cousins and confusion

    Hi aska,

I am asking this on behalf of my cousin in the faculty of arts and science.

He has just finished first year and 5.00 credits, and has barely been able to maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.50.

From the official U of T calendar, it says that academic standing is assessed twice a year, after Winter and after Summer. I am also aware of the policies about GPA and probation/suspension.

What’s not clear is what happens after wrapping up the Fall session, because my artsci friends who are In Good Standing after year 2 and beyond never get their academic status displayed after the Fall semester, only after the Winter/Summer semester.

Let’s say my cousin finishes the Fall session and his cumulative GPA falls below 1.50. Will he be put on probation right away?

And let’s say my cousin’s cumulative GPA falls below 1.50 after Fall and he is unable to meet the 1.50/1.70 rule after Winter. Will he only get probation due to standing (apparently) not being assessed in the Fall, or will he be suspended?

I would appreciate it if you could clear up this confusion, thanks!

    Regards,
    Thomas

    ?????????

    Hey Thomas,

So your ?cousin? seems to be in a bit of a pickle huh?

The reason the calendar seems unclear about what happens after the fall session is because nothing happens after the fall session. Like you said, your CGPA is only assessed in regards to academic probation at the end of a full session, that being after winter or after summer. So if your ?cousin? finishes the fall session with a GPA below 1.5, nothing will happen.

However, if your ?cousin? doesn?t fix things in the winter term to end the year with a 1.7 GPA or at least make a CGPA of 1.5, then your ?cousin? will be suspended for a year.

Hope this clears up any confusion for your ?cousin?! 😉

like Elvis and his Jail House Rock, you can make probation cool too

are academic probation letters mailed or emailed?

    ———————————————

    My dearest short and sweet,

So here’s the dealio with probation.

Snail mail will go out within the first month or two of the next academic session from the faculty and you will most likely receive an email from your college (if you are in Arts and Science) around the same time.

However, this information differs from college to college. Some colleges might put in an honest effort to contact you but others might not. For Innis college, some sort of email is usually sent out.

Pretty much it’s your responsibility to figure out?if you are put on probation. If you wait long enough, ROSI booting you out of your classes is also a tell tale way of knowing you are on probation. *edit: you will not be booted out of your classes … duuuurrr … mah bad … i’m not perfect … geeez

    Mr. Rogers and probation

I was just wondering can i be on academic probation if i only completed three credits this year?? my GPA was only 1.48 so I’m wondering what my status for the fall semester will be.\

    ?????????????????????

    Hi de ho,

It depends …. on … dun dun dun … what year you are in!

If this is your first year, than no. U of T doesn’t assess your academic standing until you have completed 4.0 FCE.

If you are in a higher year, than yes they will put you on probation. It doesn’t matter how many credits you take after the 4.0 FCE for the school to put you on probation. They check your academic standing after each term, after you have completed your initial 4.0 credits.

oh don’t you look at me with those probation eyes

Awkward hello to you…I’m terrified. Absolutely, positively, incredibly terriffied. I thought I had made it, but now I’m not so sure…
I have a cumulative GPA of 1.45 for my freshman year. Procrastination really hit me bad this time;? my best class turned out about 10% lower than I had anticipated probably because of one assignment…

So now I find myself a first year, MAYBE future second year, student…because I am on probation. My only and most fearful question (if I could ask in person my voice would most likely quiver):

Can I still enrol in courses this fall (2012) at U of T?
    What happens next?

Hate to be whiney about this because I have only myself to blame, but right now what I really need is help of someone who knows UofT better than me!

Many thanks in advance for your advice and help, seriously really appreciate it…

    Signed,
    Worried-freshman-with-bad-study-habits

p.s. I’ve read the definition of probation on your forum(?)but am still confused… sorry, can that be enlightened/explained please??

    ?????????????????????

    Hey heeey Worried-freshman-with-bad-study-habits,

Breathe … probation is not as scary as it seems. Quite a few students are put on probation after their first year. It’s a hard adjustment from highschool to university and it takes some time to get your study habits into order. Probation is then put into place to warn students that if they keep going?down the?same road as they are, that things are looking a little dark for graduation.

But the bright side is that you have time to switch things around. Your academic standing will be reassessed at the end of Winter orSummer sessions. At this time if your CGPA?is?1.50?or higher you?will be taken off of probation and put into ‘Good Standing’. You are in a great position to be able to be able to turn this situation around. Your current CGPA is 1.45, which?is extremely close to what you need it to be.

If you do not receive a cumulative?CGPA?of 1.50 (so this includes all of your marks from all years), but have an annual GPA (so?just the?school year) of 1.70, you will remain on academic?probation.

If you do not get the CGPA of 1.5?OR a GPA of 1.70 then you will be suspended for a year. ??

Oh geez! I almost forgot to address the most panicky part of your question. YES! you will be able to take courses. The only limitation is that you cannot take more then 5.0 FCE in the Fall/Winter session.

You seem to have a good attitude going on. The first step was?to take responsibility and stop blaming the world (Check). Now just work on your study habits … check out the Career Center for seminars and the Writing Center. Procrastination happens. It’s YouTube’s fault.

You’ve got his man! Go forth and have academic success and leave probation in the dust.

supportively yours … but just yours,

calmly freaking out over here on probation

    Hey there!

So I was put on probation after first year, did a summer course( passed but not enough to get of probation) and was able to move on to the winter term ( while still on probation). So fall/winter term? finished and I got my marks. I’m a part time student though and only completed 2.5 courses this year. Would I be not assessed because I didn’t complete 4.0 credits? Also, do they round up? I know I need a 60% avg or more to move on to the next term…I’m at a 59.6% fml. Just freaking out.

    Thanks!

    ??????????????????????-

    Hey Probator,

Here’s the page from the Book of the Dead … I mean Course Calendar on Academic Standing:

    Academic Standing

There are four kinds of academic standing which apply to students who have
    attempted at least four courses in the Faculty: In Good Standing; On Probation;
    On Suspension; Refused Further Registration

Academic standing is assessed twice a year:

    1. At the end of the Fall/Winter Session; the GPAs used for this status
assessment are the annual and the cumulative GPAs.
    2. At the end of the Summer Session; the GPAs used for this status assessment
are the sessional and the cumulative GPAs.

Note: Students who have not achieved final standing* in 4.0 credits will have
    a status of “Not Assessed”.

    In Good Standing:

Students are described as In Good Standing if they are neither On Probation,
Suspended nor Refused Further Registration; these terms are explained below. For
students with particularly noteworthy academic results, there are three specific
forms of recognition, which are described in the ?Student Services &
    Resources? section.

    Probation; Suspension; Refused Further Registration

The following regulations apply to students who have attempted at least four
    courses* in the Faculty.

    1. A student shall be on academic probation who
      a) has a cumulative GPA of
      less than 1.50 or
      b) returns from suspension.
    2. A student who, at the end of the Winter or Summer Session during which he or
      she is on probation
      a) has a cumulative GPA of 1.50 or more shall be in good
      standing
      b) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 but an annual GPA of 1.70
or more (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of 1.70 or more (Summer Session) shall
      continue on probation.
      c) has a cumulative GPA of less than 1.50 and an
annual GPA of less than 1.70 (Winter Session)/sessional GPA of less than 1.70
(Summer Session) shall be suspended for one calendar year unless he or she has
been so suspended previously, in which case he or she shall be suspended for
      three years.
    3. A student who, having been suspended for three years, is again liable for
suspension shall be refused further registration in the Faculty.

    * “Achieved final standing” applies to courses in which a student remains
formally enrolled on the last date for cancellation, unless the academic penalty
normally attached to a later cancellation is removed by petition. This includes
CR/NCR, but does not include courses with LWD or WDR.

NOTE: Students ?On Academic Probation? may take no more than five
courses in each of the Fall and Winter Sessions.

Even though you are only a part-time student they will still assess your academic standing! They check out your grades after you have hit 4.0 FCE, and then they continue to look at them twice a year, after the Winter and Summer sessions. It is not after each 4.0 FCE you obtain.

    Happy News:
Like how in the Metro today they put in between murder stories, that Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have not broken up and that Brad and Angelina’s house smells like a sewer because their pipes are backing up. Your happy news … drum roll please … they will most likely round up. Transcripts do not include decimal places, so I’m assuming everything will be rounded up.

    ?forever rounding and loving,
    aska
