computing your way to comp. sci.

    aska,
I might not be able to take the required courses to meet the 1st Criteria for the Computer Science Major, so I’m planning on applying for this subject POST during my second year, when I meet the 2nd Criteria.
So is it harder to get in the major for the second criteria than for the first? And if I apply during my second or third years, how do retroactive program fees work for Computer Science?

    ———————————————

    hey there,

before i dive right into it, i just wanna clarify that you can only apply for subject POSts between April and September of any given year. so your next opportunity to apply to the comp. sci. major will be in the summer after second year. jsyk.

it’s not necessarily harder to get in on the 2nd criteria. if you complete CSC207H1 and CSC236H1 with a combined average of at least 70% (and you’ve completed the required 1st year courses), then you will definitely be accepted into the major.

that said, most people are accepted after first year, but if you do get that magic number of 70% as an average in those two second-year courses, then you’re in. so don’t let numbers discourage you.

as for retroactive fees, basically what happens is that the comp. sci fee will be applied to your ROSI account, for every session you weren’t in computer science at uoft AFTER the session in which you accumulate four total credits.

so if you get into comp. sci after second year, assuming you completed at least 4.0 FCEs in first year, and you didn’t do any summer courses, you would be retroactively charged the difference between the artsci fee and the comp. sci fee for your second year.

you can take a look at the fee and all the subtle, subtle regulations relating to this on page 3 of this document. note that there’s a mistake in Note 2 on Table 1: you will not be charged Commerce fees, but rather comp. sci fees, which is the ~$11k that’s listed.

    c’mon, fees.utoronto. get it together.

good luck on getting into comp. sci., my friend,

    fees the bees’ knees

    Hellooo?
A lot of my friend said that Uoft is known for non-stop paying, thus I want to have a budget of all future payments (in the coming year) as a first year student in arts & sci. I know that ROSI allows us to check, but I can’t seem to find anything regarding future payment yet… Do you know when will they show it? And meanwhile, do you know where can I check all the payment? Like is there a webpage or something? THANKS!

    ???????????????

    hey there,

look at you, planning ahead! that’s pretty impressive, you know. you’re probably gonna be in the .12% of people* who graduate without student debt.

actually, uoft has fewer total payments than most schools. some schools have you pay fees every semester, but for uoft, you basically make your entire payment (or defer your payment) at the beginning of the year, because we’re not (fully) on a semestered system.

the tuition schedule for Fall/Winter 2014-2015 isn’t up yet, but you can take a look at the 2013-2014?total fees here (just scroll down to Table 4) or here if you’re an international student. the 2014-2015 schedule will probably not change too much from that. the 2014-2015 fee schedule should be up around mid-july, and your fees should be on ROSI once you enrol in courses.

    cheers,

time’s running but the money aint coming :(

    Hey Aska!!

Just curious if you know why U of T posts full tuition owing, and starts charging interest in July, when OSAP themselves note that recipients won’t receive their funding until “a couple weeks” after classes start (in this case, not until the end of Sept). It just seems unfair to have to spend? around $150 monthly in interest, when I don’t have access to funding or rich parents. Yet another U of T money grab?

    Thanks!

    ~K

    ?????????

    K,

Uhhhhh soooooooo UofT doesn’t start charging interest until November 15 so you can cool your jets for now and await your OSAP in peace.

A.k.a. nope, not a money grab from UofT.

As for the bitterness that seems to be attached to your quotations over there, just a be tea dubs: the reason you don’t actually get your OSAP money until “a couple of weeks” into courses is to make sure you’re actually in said courses and that you’re not the money grabber. 😉

    Cheers!

the black hole in your wallet leads to uoft

    Hey Aska,

I’m just wondering if I register for only the second half of summer school (S term) and I pay my fees BUT drop all my classes before the start of classes for second semester of summer, do I get a full refund including the incidental fees and whatnot?

    ?????????

    Hey hey!

So if you’re just taking that one S course but you’re on the fence about it, you have until July 1 to get ALL your money back.

    Just be super careful okay!

Because if you’re just a day late and you attend the class, see that it sucks, and THEN decide to drop it, you’ll get 100% back BUT there will be a $242 charge, which in my humble opinion is utter crap, but that’s UofT for you. Ahem. Like it’s worded on the fees schedule as “100% less minimum charge,” which cruelly gets your hopes up. So rude. Soooo rude.

But that’s in a long time and I’m sure you’ll make up your mind before July 1, so don’t fret too much over fees. 🙂

fees, fees, and oh, more fees!

Hey, I`m a non degree student. I`m only doing one class in the fall and another in the winter. However, I`ve noticed that my tuition is very high, mainly because I have an additional 300+ bucks tacked on for incidental campus and society fees. As a non-degree student is there a way to opt out of all of this?.

    Thanks

    Dave

    ?????????

    Hey Dave,

Unfortunately, whether you?re a non-degree student or not, you still technically attend U of T and as a result, are in the same boat as the degree students.

If you?re curious as to where that additional few hundred goes, you can take a look at this breakdown. However, the only things you can really opt-out of are the health and dental plans. As a part-time student now, you?ll be getting about $75 back. Further info on opting-out can be found on the APUS website. Sorry, bud!

    free education … please?

Good morning. My name is Uacaly, i’m a brazilian student. I just wanna know if you give free courses for students of others countries. And how can i get it? Thank you.

    ———————————————

    Hey there Uacaly,

Do I personally give free courses for students of other countries? Not unless it’s in being bitter, sarcastic and awesome … or burping.

But I’ll go for the more logical assumption that you are talking about the university. No, U of T does not offer free courses to students from any country. Actually, a big chunk of the student body is from different countries and that policy would probably put the school in the poor house.

The most I think you could get, in the manner of free education, is auditing a class. You can contact a professor and ask if they mind you attending a class and you can sit in and listen. You won’t do course work and you will not be given any recognition that you attended the class.

No free education in this neck of the woods!

the Mary Poppins bag of U of T fees

    Hey Aska,

I am an OSAP student, and I realize I have been charged nearly $100 for a “Service chg on outstanding balance”, meaning they accrued interest on my balance after November 1 this fall because I hadn’t paid it off in full.

The thing is, I deferred my balance because I am on OSAP. I literally could not pay it off until January (when the rest of my OSAP came in)! How is this fair? Is there anything that can be done?

    ??????????????????????-

    Heyo OSAP-er

The reason deferrals exist?are to keep you from being withdrawn from your courses, not to excuse you from interest fees. All students accrue interest on the 15th of every month starting in October. By deferring your fees in September, the faculty keeps you in your classes without making the minimum payments, unlike the student who are not on OSAP.

Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing you can do about these service charges. I’m sure you?can go into the Admissions and Awards and shed a few tears, but they might just stare over your head because they know that?no matter how convincing you are, and how justified your reasonings are, they just can’t reverse those fees.

    inception, laundry and fees

Hi aska,I planned on taking a class this summer to make my fourth year a little bit easier, but when I realized that would be a waste of money because of my dreaded flat fees, I dropped the course. I checked my balance on ROSI, expecting it to be at zero since I wasn’t taking anything, but apparently I owe $45 for “Student System Access Fee.” I’m not taking *anything*, but I owe $45. I’m not trying to be cheap, but I work two jobs as it is and don’t think I should have to pay $45 when I’m not getting a thing from UofT this summer. Is there any way of getting out having to pay this fee? Thanks.

    ??????????????????????-

    Patience young grasshopper!

There are many students throwing their fists up to the skies about this fee!

    Side Bar Ted

What a Student Can Do With $45

    1) Eat about 23 meals off of the McDonalds Dollar Menu

    2) 28 Regular Coffees

    3) Laundry for about 11 month

    ?????????????????????????????????? Rules of University Student’s?Laundry

????????????????????????????????????1) It only needs to be done when the underwear supply has

    ???????????????????????????????????? been fully depleated

????????????????????????????????????2) Pants never really get dirty enough to have to wash them

???????????????????????????????????? 3) If there are no visible signs of dirtiness, Febreze counts as

    ???????????????????????????????????? washing

Oh man it’s like the inception of side bars …

    FOCUS ASKA

    Ok …

If you did not make any payments, and therefore did not register fully?in the course, you should get that money back. Those fees are made out to a seperate department than your other fees, so they just take a little longer to register you dropped the course and reverse the charge.

I’m Going To Save Lives, So You Make My Tuition Higher?

I’m a student currently attending Fleming College. A few days ago I got early acceptance into the practical nursing program; which means I’ll be starting Jan 2012. I’m currently already enrolled in a program (GHS). I have already started the process of changing my OSAP application to say I’ll be taking nursing in Jan and not finishing the GHS program. My question was since my tuition for nursing is a LOT more than my tuition for GHS will the amount of OSAP I get in Jan change?

    ———————————————

… at U of T? Actually its probably the same for Fleming college.

What will most likely happen is a reassement.
OSAP will look at your finances again and if your entitlement is more they will release that to you.

Depending how fast things are assessed, you may receive all of your new OSAP in Jan. If it takes a long time, they will issue what you were already entitled and you will receive the difference later on in the semester.

    Happy nursing!

    yours,

welcome to u of t, give us the cash money

is there an enrollment deposit the u have to pay when you accept your offer ?

    Mansi

    ???????????????

Hey Mansi! Congrats on getting in (well hypothetically, anyway). The only deposit you’ll need to pay regards your residence. When you receive your offer to U of T, you will shortly receive an offer to a residence, if you applied to a college residence. They will tell you specific amount you need to pay in order to reserve your spot. That’s your deposit.

As for U of T, all you need to do is select your courses in July and pay your minimum to register. Then you’re in! Suspiciously easy, no?

All the specific instructions will be found (including dates!) with your acceptance package. Which you will be getting, right? Expect it to look something like this.

    let’s get visual

I’m trying to find the difference between the Visual Studies program offered at UofT and the Visual Culture and Communication program offered at UTM. Besides the course codes they are basically the same except for the pricing. The one offered at UofT is regulated is approx. $5,000 and the one at UTM is de-regulated approx. $10,000.
    whyy?? thanks 🙂

    Stephanie ..

    ———————————————

Hmm… I think it’s because the Visual Culture and Communication program at UTM is a joint program with Sheridan College, which means that you are shelling out more for professional supplies and a joint college degree. (There is also a mandatory internship!) It also takes in digital photography, media and filmmaking, and god knows, those things can be expensive. The Visual Studies program at U of T proper is a strict studio art program, with less expensive supplies. Judging by both of their (horribly ugly!) websites, these things seem to be the major differences.

There’s a contact for the CCIT program, if you have any more specific questions.

wait ’till i get ma money right

    Hi !

This website was a genius idea !? I have dropped two courses all by July 13 2010 for summer session. However they are charging me $437 . 00 Bucks for full Incidental Fees! This is way too much money because I am a part-time student and not a full-time student for summer session. My incidental fees should be refunded 50% since the fee schedule states that July – Aug. from
july 12- aug 2 its Incidental fees 50 % refund. its really not fair.? I only have one 0.5 credit course right now. How am I suppose to pay for this when it is so wrong…my total balance is around $800.00 because I have to pay $437.00 incidental fees. Does anyone know someone who can solve this problem with me. How should I solve this problem… Please help me. Thank you in advance.

    ???????????????

Hey there. Sorry to hear about your financial issue. U of T’s ROSI system is notoriously late with showing payments and tracking changes, so this may be an issue you will have to take up with your college registrar and Financial Accounts.

Your observations are correct. According to the financial schedule of Innis College (where we might have to pretend you are going, for example’s sake), 50 percent of incidental fees were refunded between July 12th and August 2nd for all “S” code courses. I guess your dropped courses didn’t go through, or there was a ROSI screw up. These things happen.

I’d recommend talking to your college registrar about it, who will then tell you to go to Student Accounts. Eventually this will get sorted out but you might have to eat the balance for now. ROSI is an evil she devil who can destroy lives. She is not meant to be loved, but feared.
