classic aska feature :how to register (read your registration handbook!)

alright first years. i know that you might be feeling a little nervous for Tuesday, August 1st when you register for courses. unfortunately i won’t be here to help you out, since i’ll be on the road to lovely cleveland, ohio. so i’ve prepared an ultra-detailed, idiot proof guide to registering for courses on your first day and what to expect when trying to tame the awful she-beast that is ROSI.

things to remember:
1) you can only register for a maximum of 5 CREDITS on AUGUST 1st. that means you that can only select 5 full year credits, or 10 “F” or “S” classes. you will be able to add an extra credit (totaling 6) on AUGUST 15th.
2) “F” code courses are courses that go from september 11th to december 8th. “S” code courses are courses that go from january 8th to april 13th. “Y’ code courses go from september 11th to april 13th.
3) “M” – monday, “T” – tuesday, “W” – wednesday, “R” – thursday!, “F” – friday, “S” – saturday. got it? so if you have a class that says MWF10 – that means that you will have class on mondays, wednesdays and fridays from 10 AM to 11PM. if you have a class that says R4 – that means you have class on thursdays from 4 pm to 5pm. M6-9 – mondays 6 to 9 pm. classes will begin 10 minutes after their listed time to allow for travel. so if you have a class that starts at 12 – it won’t start until 12:10 in reality.
4) “LO101″/”L5101” – these are lecture codes, lectures are the period when the professor talks to the class. “T101”, etc. – these are tutorial times. tutorials are smaller sections of the class, where a smaller group of students will meet with their “T.A.” (who may or may not ask you out on a date) to discuss the material covered in the lectures and readings. only select one lecture and one tutorial. you can choose the times that work best for your schedule. if you are in life sciences, also select the lab that works for you. sometimes different professors will teach different lecture sections…so be wary. if you don’t get into the tutorial you want, don’t despair. you may be able to switch at a later date. the important thing is getting the lecture that you want in the course that you want. you may also be able to switch lectures at a later date.
5) some classes will have priority for students that are already enrolled in that courses’ program. examples of this include second year classes, or specific first year classes in small programs (like commerce). the priority controls are listed on the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the arts and science timetable. if the class you want has a priority control that you don’t meet (aka it says something other than “1st year studies in arts and science” or “1st year studies in insert specific program here”), then you won’t be able to enrol in said class until AUGUST 15TH.
6) some classes that you may want might be filled. this means that you will have to go on the WAITLIST. wait lists are new for this year, but basically you will be asked if you want to enrol in the wait list if the lecture is filled. this isn’t true for every class, some classes do not have a wait list option. you can check if the class you want does have a wait list in the arts and science timetable. once enrolled in the wait list, you can view your rank and see what spot you have obtained in line. if someone who has received a spot in the lecture decides to drop the class, the first person on the wait list will become instantly enrolled. please check your status on ROSI to see if you have obtained a spot. wait lists dissolve in late september.
how to select your classes:
1) turn on your computer and log on to the internet. (duh).
2) go to the website – www.rosi.utoronto.ca – click the red button that says “Student Web Service”, which is found on the left hand side of the screen. (ROSI is the scary clown.)
3) to log on to ROSI – enter in your student number (found on your acceptance letter package and/or any correspondence with the University). your number is a 9 digit number that begins with “99”. enter in your PIN – your pin is automatically set to the last two digits of your birth date, then then month you were born then the day you were born. i.e. if you were born november 11th, 1988 – your pin would be 881111. if you have changed your pin, use that one. if you become locked out of your account because you’ve entered in the wrong pin more than 3 times, contact your registrar’s office.
4) it probably won’t let you in because it’s not your start time. look on ROSI, a message should pop that gives you the time that you can log in. you will not be able to select your courses until that specific time (to the minute). have some coffee. now let’s say that your start time is “9:15 AM” (just an example) – at precisely 9:15 AM, log into ROSI with your student number and pin. select the “login” button that is gray.
5) this will take you to your home page that should say “welcome your name!” select the button “course enrolment”, the second button on the left hand side from a list of functions.
6) the next screen will say “manage courses”. under “activity code”, enter in the course code of the class you want to add, ex: for Intro to Film Studies you will enter in “INI115Y1” – yes you have to enter in all of it. the section code is “Y” for full year classes, “F” for classes in the fall term and “S” for classes in the second term. again, the timetable lists all this information. now hit “submit”. for the seminars, all humanities seminars have the code “HUM199Y1” (or “F”/”S”), social sciences have “SOC199Y1” and sciences have “SCI199Y1”. the section code is what you have to select for the seminar you want to enrol in. you can only enrol in one first year seminar as a first year student.
7) the next is the “add course” function. if there are multiple sections and times, they will be listed with the option to select a specific time (both lecture and tutorial) for you to choose. choose the one you want (just click) and then hit “add meeting section”. if the courses (or a specific section) is full and have a wait list available, there will be an option near the bottom of the screen that will say “_____ course is full, but there is a wittiest available with _ students on the wait list for _ spaces”. if you would like to join the wait list for the class, hit the red button that says “join wait list” and you will be immediately added to the list. if the class is full, it will also say so.
8) repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have the courses that you have tried to select. if you cannot get into the class you want, you may have to try at a later date. remember that being on the wait list for a class takes up a credit for a class that you may want! if ROSI logs you off the system (usually this happens when too many people are on it) – keep trying to re-enroll until it lets you again. usually there’s a 10 minute window to register, then it will log you off. wait 5 or 10 minutes. it should be fine after that.
9) to view your classes in a timetable format, select “personal timetable” from the drop down menu. this will also give you the specific location of the class. there is a map linked to this function, so you can see where you will have to go. to see how much your courses are going to cost you (once you have your timetable finalized), look under “financial accounts” and select “invoice format”. to pay your fees, print that page out and give it to a bank. you must pay your fees by SEPTEMBER 1ST – minimum 60%. if you are receiving OSAP and would like to defer your fees, contact your registrar’s office.
10) to see all the classes you’ve selected, click on “list courses”. to see your status and how many people have registered, select “manage courses”. and that’s pretty much it!
