Uh, sorry to bug you like 10 minutes after I just submitted my first question(LOL) … but I just thought of another question. Needs answering, okay?!?!Alright so is Humanities really a useless stream to pursue? =[ In particular,English? Apparently the only thing to be is a teacher/professor … and thatdoesn’t sound appealing AT ALL.Noone has told me anything that I could be if I major in English.. thatprobably means I’m screwed. Fabulous … it’s a shame because I love creativewriting but come on, writing for the rest of my life? Uhh…
Ugh shut up.? Seriously ? English is such a valuable degree.? The more you read, the more intelligent you become.? The more intelligent you become, the better you are at acing interviews, being the witty conversationalist, and you?ll develop your own opinions much better than if you were, say ? an engineer.? You?ll be able to develop a SOCIAL LIFE with this degree because you?ll actually have free time, and social skills are a *key* factor for interviews.? Don?t listen to your high school teachers/guidance counselors about ?the only careers available afterwards?.? That?s lame, and they?re lame.? I bet they?re saying this out of spite since they ended up in their career because:
a) they decided they wanted a family when they met their second partner ever at 21
b) liked drinking more than working at pursuing a good career (mine in high school literally spent lunch and third period at the pub down the street)
c) are afraid of the real world
d) believe that they?re the next inspirational teacher who will change that one special student?s life, and you?re not that one special student
If you get your masters and wink at the right people, you could end up with a really killer job.? How about journalism?? And, with regards to your last sentence, I have two words for you:
LEONARD COHEN.
I, too, take offence to that statement.? I?m getting paid to creatively write a response to your comment.? It?s people like me with the Passion that find ways to utilize the ?pathless? degrees.
?cheers?

haha, I like the other posts.
English is perhaps the most useful humanity degree. Verbal fluency is directly connected to career success. English courses foster verbal fluency (if you apply yourself)… so it is not so much the subject matter but the skills you acquire through studying English (writing, editing, verbal reasoning) that help you with your career.
Another subject that is excellent for fostering these skills is philosophy.
A friend of mine majored in English and Philosophy and is now an officer in the Canadian Navy making +70k a year and having the time of his life…
As long as you are open to the kind of jobs you’d like to do, there’s plenty you can do with an English degree.
