suspended from school – but not from LIFE

Hi, I’m currently a student who just came off academic suspension. I’ve been attending all my classes but I haven’t gotten any grades for anything yet because my current classes are full year courses. However, I’m starting to get anxiety again. I’m scared I won’t be able to bring up my CGPA by next semester and will be suspended once again for 3 years. That has been on my mind a lot lately and it’s starting to make me depressed. My question is if a person is suspended will I be able to apply to a college? Or do I have to wait three years. I know it have a chance to do well and I need to work hard, but having that 3 year suspension idea is really eating away at me. And have people gotten off academic probation after a one year suspension? Help! Thanks.

    ———————————————

    hey there,

sure, people have gotten off probation after a one year suspension. it’s very possible. i don’t have any specific stats, but not everyone who has a one year suspension then goes on to be suspended for three years.

the important thing is to establish a network of academic support at the university that can help you stay on track – if you do that, i’d say you have a good chance of getting off probation.

suspension only restricts you from re-registering in the Faculty, but it doesn’t prevent you from taking classes elsewhere. of course, if you do apply to a college and they ask for your uoft transcript, it may be a good idea to explain why you were suspended, because the fact of your suspension may impact your admission to that college.

however, it’s by no means not allowed, and if you are admitted to a college, you’re free to take classes there while you’re suspended at uoft. just keep in mind that any college courses you take while on suspension can’t be used as transfer credits to uoft.

    best of luck,

some brand-spanking new rules on academic probation!

    Hey,

I was put on academic probation at the end of this past academic year (in May). And i did one semester in the summer session (May-June). Wanted to be home for the second semester as i live in a different country.

I just wanted to know the terms in my exact position to avoid getting suspended. It says on the website that academic standing is assessed twice a year (after the academic year and after the summer session). But i also read somewhere that they assess your standing on probation after 2 semesters or after completing 4.0 credits.

So will i be only assessed on the one summer semester or after another semester (Fall)?

    Much appreciated!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

your befuddlement is understandable, since they just finished tinkering with the rules related to academic probation. however, what’s up now is the current information.

your academic standing will be assessed at the end of every Fall/Winter and Summer sessions where you earn at least 0.5 credits, not including credit/no-credit, pass-fail or extra courses. so unless you only did 0.5 FCEs in the summer, and made it CR/NCR, an extra, or pass-fail, you’ll be assessed at the end of the summer.

    cheers,

Hi, if I get placed on academic probation from utsc, will a letter be mailed to my house?? I dont want my parents to find out

    ———————————————

    Hi,

I was wondering if u of t sends a letter of probation to your house. Or do they just tell you by email?

    ———————————————

    hey there,

i woke up at 6:30 this morning, all fresh and ready to take on a new day at Askastudent HQ. “what will the bright-eyed, spry, driven youth of uoft ask me today?” i asked, feeling a tingle of anticipation (or possibly a tingle from lack of blood circulation; it’s difficult to tell the difference) at the thought. maybe they’ll ask me how to broaden their opportunities outside the classroom! or perhaps they’ll inquire whether they can help with the growing homeless dog population in toronto!

i get into work, big smile on my face, sit down at my computer, and what do i find? not one, but TWO questions about how to PULL A FAST ONE on your parents! do kids really do this? just lie to their parents like that? in my day, kids didn’t lie to their parents. in fact, they were so honest that one of my friends snuck out?every night to the forest behind her house to pick wildflowers for her mother. how dedicated is that?

anyway, as SHOCKED and APPALLED as i am by this blatant lack of respect, this uncalled-for SNEAKINESS may work out for you. according to the UTSC calendar, “[s]tudents who are on academic probation, suspended or refused further registration are emailed” (that’s under the first heading, ‘Grade Reports.'”) at UTM, “[s]tudents whose academic performance has resulted in probation, suspension or refusal of further registration will be notified by e-mail.

UTSG students are less fortunate: your probation letters are mailed to your mailing address. tough luck, kids.

UTM and UTSC students, technology is on your side. for now.

    cheers,

metaphors & motor engines work their way into a probation question

    Hi,

I was wondering when would we find out if we are placed on academic probation?

    ———————————————

    hey there,

good question. mighty good question. that’s a good. hm.

to be honest, i don’t have any specific dates i can offer you. academic standing is determined at the end of the fall/winter and summer sessions, but that’s as specific as the calendar is willing to get. if you’re taking courses in the summer session, you’ll be notified if you’ve been put on probation after the session is over. if you’re still waiting to hear about fall/winter, then sit tight and keep waiting, or call the faculty and DEMAND INFORMATION!*

though, really, instead of waiting on tenterhooks like this, you can just take a look at your CGPA on ROSI. if it’s less than 1.50, you’re gonna be leaving from probation station sometime soon. if not, you can go buy a sandwich…at the station…because…you’ll be staying there.**

    cheers,

    aska

*don’t do that. ask politely. like a uoft student do.

    a probation consideration

Hey so basically i screwed up my first year, failed a couple of courses for my laziness and lack of work but now that it is time to apply for SubjectPost i don’t have the marks of the 4 require credits and i am pretty sure i will go on academic probation. My question is what will be my next step should i redo first year and get my 4 credits?? is that even allowed?? i really have no clue what to do, since i am not enrolled in a SubjectPost when am i eligible to choose my courses for next year. Sadly i probably be looking into 5th year but i guess i just really want to know what my options are. Thanks

    ———————————————

    hey there,

if you are put on probation (and i don’t know whether or not you will be – you’ll have to wait for the school to tell you that), the first thing to do is something that’s maybe not so obvious because it’s not a super formal thing, but it is incredibly helpful. “what is it????” i hear you ask on the edge of your seat. well…

take stock of your school situation. probation kind of gives you an opportunity to take a breather and ask yourself, 1) why you think you’re in this position, 2) what you wanted to get out of university, 3) whether you’re getting it and 4) what your next steps should be. probation isn’t a punishment; it’s an opportunity to make a decision about your future. so that’s what i’d do if i were in your shoes.

if you haven’t completed 4.0 FCEs, you won’t be eligible to enter into a subject POSt. that means that if/when you come off probation (or, alternately, if you just return normally in fall 2014), you’ll have to continue taking courses, effectively as a first-year student, until you’re eligible to enrol into a POSt. those courses may not be the same as the ones you took this year, they will just be ones that you are able to/want to enrol in (i.e. because you’ve completed the prereqs or because they don’t have prereqs).

finally, i’d highly recommend that, whether or not you go on probation, you make an appointment with your registrar’s office. they can give you some specific advice about how to deal with this past year, and what steps you can take to improve in the future. like, i’m super helpful and all, but i don’t know you. i can only do so much to help your mysterious, anonymous situation, blurring hazily in the virtual ether of my computer screen, so close, and yet so far…

also, the registrar’s office won’t go on random, poetic* tangents while they’re helping you, so that’s a plus.

    aska

*i’m using “poetic” in the loosest sense of the word.

  • OSAP,  probation

    osap probation declaration

    hey,
I was put on osap probation for dropping below 3.0 credits because I realized I would fail some courses. Then during the spring semester I dropped another course. These happened due to personal reasons (no medical certificates to back anything up though) and I’m pretty sure I can do a lot better than this year. So having been put on probation will I be suspended?

    Thanks

    ———————————————

    hey there,

when you’re put on OSAP probation, you stay on probation for 12 months. during that time, you’re expected to pass all the courses you register for. if you do, you’ll be taken off probation. if you don’t, you’ll be restricted from receiving OSAP for one school year.

take a look at Question #19 to read more about it, but note that this PDF is a 2012-2013 document, so i’d recommend you call financial aid to double-check, just in case something’s changed since then.

    probing the rules on probation

    Hi aska,

So if I’ve attempted 3.0 credits and one of them is a Credit/No credit (so only 2.5 is being assessed for my CPGA), and I still eligible to get put on academic probation?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

so, yes, UTSC says you need to have attempted 3.0 FCEs in order for your standing to be assessed, but i know how confusing the word “attempted” can be in this context to a student (“what do you mean, attempted? i did the work! i attempted to show up to class on time!” etc. etc.). however, since CR/NCR courses count as degree credit, you’ll still be assessed at the end of this term. just because you have a CR/NCR, that does not exempt you; they’re just going to use your other courses which do have final grades on them to assess your academic standing.

however, i happen to know that the rules are going to be changing in regards to this very soon on the downtown campus, so it’s probably a good idea for you to call scarborough and see if similar changes are happening there that may impact your situation.

    cheers,

    aska

P.S. the person who asked this question said in the subject line of their e-mail that they’re at utsc. i didn’t just, like, randomly assume it, or divine the information with the magical powers i was given at birth. clarity is always helpful is in these situations, friends, so good job to the person who asked the question for helping me help them: you’re not bad, kid. not bad.

  • probation

    probation explanation replication

    Hey,

So it’s almost the end of this year and I got admitted but on a 3.0 credit restriction (because my grades dropped at the end of grade 12). But after the end of the fall term I dropped a half credit and I was put on osap probation. Yesterday I realized I am probably going to fail calculus so I made a late withdrawal. So obviously this year wasn’t the best for me. On the universities website it says that after attempting 4.0 credits will your academic standing be assessed. So does that mean I won’t be put on academic probation at the end of the spring term? If so will that mean after another attempted credit I will be put on probation (unless I do really well)? Or do they mean that they will assess my standing after 3.0 completed courses. Because I wanna redo calc in summer school, I know I can do better this time I just slacked off for most of the year :(. If it helps both the courses I withdrew from were LWDs for total of 1.5 credits.

    Thank you in advance.

    ———————————————

    hey there,

right, so if you go here and scroll down to ‘Academic Standing,’ you will see that yes, you get assessed after you’ve attempted 4.0 credits. LWDs don’t count as “attempted” courses, so yeah, whenever you get up to the 4.0 credit mark, then you will get assessed. so if you finish this year having attempted 3.0 courses (which i think is what you’re saying?), then the next 1.0 credits you take will bring you up to 4.0, after which point you’ll be assessed. when that happens, if your CGPA is below 1.50, then you will be put on probation.

read up on that document i linked for more information, ’cause i just kinda gave you the cliffnotes version of it. however, yeah, if you’re gonna do a course in the summer, be aware that it’s pretty crucial that you do well. you may want to consider redoing calc in the fall term, because spring courses move twice as quickly and can be kinda soul-destroying and hard to keep up with. if you’re really confident that you can do awesome though, then go ahead. destroy that course and bring up your GPA! whoo. *waves pom-poms*

    best,

    aska

P.S. This is utsg information. if you’re not on the downtown campus, the information may be different! go here for an explanation of utm’s policy and here for utsc’s.

  • probation

    three campuses’ probation organization enumeration

    Hi Aska!

So just to clarify, if I only attempted 3 credits this whole year at UTSC can I still be put on academic probation?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

    hey there,

so, i’ve recently answered two questions about this, one of them about utm and the other about utsg. i guess i should thank you for asking about the third campus, one because it completes the holy trinity, and two because the rules surrounding academic probation at utsc are a bit different from the other two campuses.

so at utm and utsg, you have to have attempted 4.0 credits (that is, stayed enrolled in the course and not have a LWD or WDR on them) for you to be considered either “in good standing” or “on probation.” at utsc though, if you’ve attempted 3.0 credits or more, not 4.0, you can be put on academic probation. so, you will be put on probation if your CGPA is less than 1.60 (on the other two campuses, it’s 1.50), and if you’ve attempted 3.0+ credits.

that all make sense? cool. i really hope all of you guys asking about probation don’t actually get put on probation. i’m rootin’ for you, ok?

    cheers,

    an academic probation administration clarification

i’ve been avoiding asking until now but you literally just answered a question that is so similar to mine. this one?https://askastudent.utoronto.ca/?p=7033?the probation equation (and summer consideration). i’m in almost the exact same situation except i’m only taking? 3 courses and in that person’s ask you said that they won’t get kicked out but i checked that probation link and it says

Students who have a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) of less than 1.50 at the end of an academic session after which they have attempted 4.0 credits, will be placed on academic probation. Students returning from suspension will have a status of on probation.

is it different for me because i’m only taking 3 courses like if i fail all 3 will it be different for me because i didn’t attempt 4?
i’m so sorry to make you sorta repeat yourself but i literally went on the blog like 10 minutes before writing this and saw that question it’s gotta be fate or something.

will i be suspended for a year automatically or do i get put on probation, if i fail all 3?

thankyou thankyou thankyou you’re an angel for answering.

EDIT:?hi again. i just realized that i gave you a very shitty description of my situation and i wanted to give a bit of a better one.
(sorry if i’m crowding up your inbox, i know it can take up to two weeks for you to respond when there’s a lot of questions, so i just wanted to make my situation clearer.)

okay, i was taking a total of 4 credits at the beginning of the school year, but i dropped one of my 0.5 credits (so late i didn’t get a refund) and i did an LWD for the other 0.5 credit. which left me with 3 credits.

i don’t think i’m going to fail all 3 courses but i’m a pessimistic person and i want to know what will happen if i bomb the exams and do end up failing all 3, like what’s the worst case scenario.

does the dropped course and LWD course count as attempting 4.0 credits?

    ???????????????

    hey there,

i’m an ANGEL? no one’s ever told me i’m an angel before! you hear that, mom?! someone on the internet thinks i’m special. HA.

in all seriousness, thank you for being so thoughtful and clear in your question. it’s a breath of fresh air from the key-smashers who ask, “wot r mah chances of gettin’ in to engineerin’. btw u suk aska xoxo.”

also, you should never avoid asking me a question! i love your problems. even if your question is mind-numbingly stupid, what’s the worse that could happen? i’ll make fun of you, you’ll call me names in your head and vow never to visit this STUPID WEBSITE AGAIN – and life goes on. or maybe i’ll even be able to help you out. so please never feel too timid or whatever to ask a question, no matter what it is. and don’t worry about being repetitive. i’m used to repetitive questions.

just a note before i answer your question: the person in the post you quoted is a utm student. always be careful when you’re reading a post to take note of the campuses before applying them to your own situation, because not all the rules are the same between campuses. because you haven’t specified your school, i’m just gonna assume you’re from utsg.

k, so if we go here?and take a look at academic standing, we’ll see that you can go on probation if you’ve “attempted” 4.0 credits. you’re right to ask what “attempted” means; it’s kind of unclear. but, if you go to the asterisked footnote, you’ll see that LWDs and WDRs don’t count as attemped credits. so we’ve got one credit down: your LWD. now go check your other one that you dropped on ROSI. is it marked WDR? if so, then that also doesn’t count as an attempted credit. either way, you’ve either “attempted” 3.0 or 3.5 credits, according to uoft.

which all goes to say that since you haven’t “attempted” 4.0 credits, you will have a final standing of “not assessed”, regardless of what you pass or fail, which, as far as i can tell, doesn’t have any practical or consequential meaning whatsoever.

of course i’d encourage you not to fail, just for like your own sake or whatever, but you know, that’s all just by the by.

i hope everything goes well for you this year, my friend.

    best,

    leaving from probation station

    Hi Aska!

This semester I’ve been dealing with depression and other horrible family?issues, unfortunately its led to me doing horribly in school and having to?drop down to two classes. I’m in first year and I was just wondering how?academic probation works, if i do well next semester after doing horribly?this semester will i be in good standing? Or will i have to be put on?academic probation?

    Thanks!

    ?????????

    hey there,

i’m sorry to hear you’ve been going through some tough times. as for academic probation, everything you need to know can be found here. basically, if your CGPA (that’s cumulative GPA: in your case, that’s your GPA from Fall 2013 and Winter 2014) by the end of Winter 2014 is at least a 1.50, then you’ll be in good academic standing and will not be put on probation. that’s because the next time your marks will be assessed is in April, meaning you couldn’t get put on probation by next term.

if your marks by April are below a 1.50, however, you’ll be put on probation and you’ll have one more term (Fall 2014 or Summer 2014 if you decide to take a summer term) to get your CGPA above a 1.50. so do your best on getting your GPA above 1.50 by the end of next term, and then you’ll be in good standing.

    best of luck,

    aska

P.S. i realize this explanation is kind of confusing, so if you’re a VISUAL LEARNER, here’s a handy graph made by uoft to explain:?

  • engineering,  probation

need to get on that life (read: work) experience

    Hey Aska,

So I’ve got a bit of a doozy for you here. I’m an engineering student, who, after a horrible first year, is currently stuck with a repeat probation academic status.? Now, in order to graduate, I need to get 600 hours of engineering work experience, and as far as I can tell, my two options are the PEY program and the summer internship program. In order to apply for either of these programs in my 2nd or 3rd year, I need to be in good academic standing. To get on good academic standing, I need to get a 70% average for the next two semesters, which will upgrade me to a probation status, and then I need another two semesters of 70% average to get me to a good academic standing. That, however, means I can in no way be in good academic standing until the end of my 3rd year, assuming I can pull off the 70% averages. By that time, it will be too late to apply for or even fulfill the PEY or summer internship programs.

What then am I supposed to do to get my 600 hours?

I had a rough 1st year because my program choice, TrackOne, ended up with me taking courses I absolutely hated. I am now going into the only program I loved in TrackOne, but the repeat probation status, of course, still applies. I believe I can be much more successful now in this program, but these 600 hours are a big concern.

    Best regards 🙂

    ?????????

    hey there,

that is a tough situation, i’ll give you that. before i go ahead and give you my advice, i’m going to let you know that if you’ve not done very well in first year, maybe you should consider that engineering might not be for you.

i know you’re going into a program you like, but consider how many of the courses in the rest of the program you’ll like just as much. take a look at the courses you’ll be taking in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. do you like them? do they sound exciting, or will the majority be mind-numbingly dull? don’t rush ahead into this decision, trust me, because it just gets harder as the years go on.

that said, if you really are sure about going ahead with this program, then you will need to complete those 600 hours. like you said, the university’s internship opportunities won’t be an option for you, but you don’t have to complete them through the school. you can, but you don’t have to. so what i would do in your shoes is cast a wider net.

start looking for other internship opportunities that aren’t monitored by the school. is your dad’s friend brothers with an engineer? great, ask him if you can tag along and do your hours with him one summer. or, if you’re like me and have no contacts whatsoever and need to push and shove your own way through life, go online?and see if there are any internships out there. look, here’s one. they will also probably favour people with higher marks, but there are a lot of jobs out there and i’m sure, if you’re persistent, you’ll find someone among all those rejections. heck, that’s how i got this job.

    best of luck friend,

    aska

  • CR/NCR,  OSAP,  probation

    osap being a lil’ butt

I’m in my fourth year of university at UofT. I’ve always been in good academic standing?with my GPA and CGPA and never worried about being put on academic probation since I?obtain low 80’s. However, today I received a Notice of Academic Probation in the mail.

I need a 0.5 credit within my program to graduate, so I decided to take electives and?bump myself up to full time studies for the winter/fall semester under OSAP. I wasn’t?aware of the Credit/No credit option until October this year, and decided to opt two of?my three courses this semester since I didn’t want the final grades of elective courses?to impact my CGPA for grade school. I was under the impression that it wouldn’t impact my?funding or academic progress since I will still obtain the credits for the courses in?which I’m doing fairly well.

Why am I on Academic probation and what steps am I suppose to take in order to rectify?this situation? The last thing I want is this to affect my transcript. The only?conclusion I can come up with is that the Credit/No Credit option isn’t sanctioned by?OSAP and it looks as though I’m takin less than 60% of full time study credits. Is there?way to fix this?

    Thank you for your time,
    A concerned potential graduate.

    ?????????

    hey there,

the credit/non-credit option should not affect your full-time status. it’s not something OSAP considers, and it’s really hard for them to track it anyway, since students have such a long time they can switch between making something credit or non-credit.

the only thing i can think of is that you’ve been put on academic probation for some other reason, and it’s just taken OSAP a while to notify you about it, so it seems like it’s because of something that’s happening now when it’s actually not. OSAP often takes a really long time to correspond with students (sluggish little buggers), so this might have to do with something that happened a while back.

another option is simply that OSAP made a mistake. since your CGPA is in the low-80s, this is a pretty real option, but whether they messed up on something or you did, the only way to pinpoint your problem is to run not walk to your registrar’s office. they should be able to help you sort out your issue.

    hope it all works out,

    aska
