    Hey aska!So i’m a first year at UTM, and while its been a great experience i’m applying to transfer to st george because i want to be somewhere where more is happening, not that i’m not a fan of the deer in my back yard. thats not a joke. assuming i get in, i’m applying to residence and i’m wondering which would be the best for getting involved and overall community.
    i’m just looking for lots of opportunity to get established in student life since i’ll be a second year in a first-year situation.so which would you recommend? or if its easier, which ones WOULDN’T you recommend?
    and also, i was told by someone that there are art studio courses offered at St. george but haven’t found any online. do you know if this is true? i’m a psych major but art still interests me, so i’d be interested to knowcheers

    Right off the bat, <high five> for not bashing UTM … I know I do it sometimes, but every once in awhile they deserve not to be kicked when they are down.

    So I know there’s a chart in this world that shows how many spots are reserved for upper years per residence, but all traces of it seem to have been destroyed or my mind has completely invented it because that would be a very useful resource.

    In anycase, I know that 40% of spots are reserved for upper year in Innis Residence.
    Ok, so here’s my general deal with residences. Although I would like there to be ones that are deemed party monster zones, it really depends on the year, the students and the don. For example, I heard Chestnut was craaaazy fun one year and then a dud the next.Here are some things to maybe consider:
    1) Chestnut is not on campus but is in a pretty awesome location.

    So its cool in the sense its right near Dundas Square and Nathan Phillips?but lame for having to walk to school and for being apart of the U of T campus crowd.2) I would personally choose one that is on St.George street. For no better reason than that’s what I associate as the core of campus.3) I’ve heard good time stories from both Innis and University College … and no terror stories from Woodsworth and New (which both house upper years)

    4) I have no justification for this, but I want to rule out St. Mikes. I met a chick who lived there and she loooved to party, but I think it’s kind of on the outskirts of campus and I associate dark and scary houses with it.
    5) Vic and Trin have alot of “woohoo we’re Vic and Trin” spirit, if that’s your cup of tea go for it.
    6) Have your eyes go to the left of the homepage and down a bit and there should be a catgory thinger, click on ‘residence’ and see some other wisdom that has been offered.
    And for the record, you’re going to miss the deer.
    AND YES (sorry for the excitment, but I feel like Visual Arts Studies are a bit of a secret at St.George). In the Art section of the course calendar … here … there is the information on the Visual Art program. Skip past those FAH courses and go closer to the bottom to check out the VIS courses. Warning: I hear these classes fill up quick.

    Magic 8 Ball, Tell Me My Future

    Hiya Aska! Hope you’re well and survived your midterms.I’m currently a first year student at Innis college, and I commute (3 hours daily, pain in the arse). I’m planning on living on residence in my upper years, but I’ve heard that Innis is pretty exclusive when it comes to accepting res applications from upper years (unless you have “connections”/are a social butterfly), especially if I didn’t even live in res in first year. So, is it possible for me to apply for residence at a different college? I was thinking apartment-style at either Woodsworth or Vic. And not Chestnut, because I’m broke as heck.Thanks a million for your advice!

    You are correct with your assumptions on Innis (well the limited space, I’m not sure about these sneaky “connections” you are referring to). Innis has even limited space available for their first-year students, but my magic 8 ball is coming up “outlook good” for you.

    There is double the amount of positive answers to negative. So now you know who to ask if you’re going to pass a test and about that potentially unexpected pregnancy.

    You can apply to other residences outside of your college. Here’s the downlown on your preferred choices:

    Woodsworth:

    Their statement on your situation?- “The Woodworth Residence houses upper year, Faculty of Arts and Science undergraduate students from any Uof T college”.
    They don’t have the application set up for next year (because, let’s face it, even the school lives semester by semester) but you can check out the process and prepare yourself for the anticipation of months of checking back for application deadlines.

    New College (word on the street is that they also?house upper-years from outside of their college):

    Those two were the ones that specifically state they house kids outside of their college, but here is the list of ALL the residences. A 5 sec call to the ones that interest you the most will determine if your sort are welcome in their area.

    The student housing website for U of T also shows a surplus of housing. Check it. And, yes, for some reason they think that a university student would like to buy a house. Odds are if we could afford to buy a house, we wouldn’t be on a “student housing” website. Come on U of T … lets think that one through a little more.

    where the wild things are

    Hey aska,

    I?m a hopeful U of T Engineering Science student.? I am in a dilemma right now on deciding what residence would be best for me.? I am thinking either 89 Chestnut of New College.? I like the hotel style rooms with your own bathroom, and the supposedly amazing food at Chestnut, but I am unsure about the walk to the campus.? Also is Chestnut mostly Engineering or Arts?? New College is really close to Bahen, but I?ve never seen any pictures of rooms, or heard anything about the food.? Is the walk from Chestnut to campus that big of a deal?? Can you suggest any other residences for Engineering Science students, and where do most of them go?? Thank you for the advice!

    I always assumed that Engineers at U of T lived in a dank hole in the ground where they painted themselves blue and built bridges out of popsicle sticks, but I assume I am wrong. Since it is much later than you originally proposed your question, I am going to pretend that you got into U of T and your dreams haven’t been crushed. So here is where the Engineers live on campus:

    The answer is up to Housing Services! Glamorous, right? While U of T offers a residence guarantee to any first year full time undergrad, as a professional faculty you will have to rate what residences appeal to you on their form. Then the various residences will sort through the applications of the engineers that chose them as number one and choose the top number of students by average. (Innis Residence for instance, holds 60 spots for the 60 engineers with the highest average who chose Innis Residence as their number one housing option.) It is kind of like a bizarre game show, I guess.

    There are all kinds of different residences at U of T that vary by architecture, meal plans, roommates, religious choices at all. Since I don’t know you, I don’t know what you like. So here are some questions I will ask you and then you can make up your own mind:

    Do you have lots of money or a little bit of money? 89 Chestnut is very expensive ($10,000 a year!) while Innis and Woodsworth are cheaper because they don’t come with a meal plan.

    Do you want to live a roommate or alone? Some of the classic residences like UC, Vic, New and St. Mikes still pull the old “sleep with a roommate in the same room” thing. Innis, Vic and Woodsworth offer suite style residences, with seperate rooms and shared living rooms/bathrooms and kitchens. Some single rooms are available in some residences too, with a meal plan.

    Are you religious? You should go to St. Mike’s then, where you can live with a whole bunch of Catholics!

    Do you like hip modern fixtures or an old classic vibe? Woodworth, Rowell Jackman and Innis are totally IKEA, while the residences at Victoria College and UC have that leafy greens Victorian thing going on.

    Can you cook? Do you want to live in a co-ed environment?

    89 Chestnut is about 30 minutes away, which seems like no big deal in the summer but is a serious inconvenience when it gets cold. It is also super expensive! I hear it is a fun place to live (you are living in a hotel) and has amazing food, but if you can afford something cheaper and more conveinent, I’d say go for it. If you don’t get in, you will go to Chesnut anyway.

    don’t even think about switching residences

    Hi there,

    I after reading the numerous posts on your website, I thought you would be the ideal person to ask about the possibility of switching residence preferences. I was admitted into Innis Residence for the upcoming 2011-2012 undergrad year (Faculty of Arts and Science– Humanities). I am more than happy to live within Innis’s suite style rooms, and from what I have read it seems like a great place to spend my first year at U of T! However, a good friend of mine was admitted into U of T and we are both looking forward to attending in the fall however, she is rooming at Woodsworth and we both would love to room with one another. So, would it be possible for me to request residence at Woodsworth, and if so how would I go about doing so? (I still have not submitted any deposits) Just another question while I have your attention: since you are a student, would you say Woodsworth has better suite style rooms in comparison to Innis? I am struggling to make up my mind because Innis has presented itself as an amazing campus.

    Hey Fara,

    Congrats on getting into Innis Residence! I lived there in first year. It is pretty dope. I’m sorry to say this, but it is probably impossible for you to switch over to Woodsworth to room with your pal. Basically U of T is a buereaucracy? (which you have probably already learned), that decides to organize students in little clumps called “colleges.” The college you are accepted to dictates what residence you will in and who will handle your administrative affairs. (It does not restrict what courses you can take, or who you can make out with.) But as notoriously attractive residences, it is super doubtful that either Innis or Woodsworth would make room for you or your pal when there is probably a pretty sizeable waiting list already.

    Why not try Innis and visit your friend down the street, like all the time? She’s just up the street! The best part of university and the truly best part of first year is meeting new people and making new friends. The first year is all about letting new experiences and people into your life, and you might really adore your new roommates. The buereaucracy will make it impossible for you to switch anyways, so you might as well welcome your new truly amazing residence and the chance to visit your friend – and meet her new pals – at Woodsworth. Basically it will be like living in two residences at once! Think of all the 90s -themed dance parties you will go to. You will so hate the Macarena by the end of the year.

    One Night Stand

    HI Aska,

    I want to go to my college’s formal but my commute takes two hours so i’d have to leave really early. I’ve heard that trin has rooms you can rent out for a night for cheap ($15-$30 I think) but you have to book it the day of so it seems rather risky to me. Also, I do not go to trin and I would assume that, trin being trin, being from a different college would pose a problem. Do you know of any other residences that might rent out rooms?

    Dear sleepless in Toronto,

    Trin does allow one night sleep ins, but only in the summer session.

    Here’s the good thing: I’m not going to let you freeze to death in the knee high snow banks of Toronto.

    Here are some options

    1) look here under the Short Term Stays. They do list residences, but I checked out a few of them and they said at least a week to a month for the minimum stay. But who really keeps websites up to date nowadays, so calling the colleges are always an option.

    2) the temporary accommodations list – This has a bunch of one night stand options. I would suggest staying away from Jarvis.

    Finally, your homework is to watch the How I Met Your Mother episode: The Sexless In-keeper. If you can pull this off, you’re are golden with an evening free from rent and possibly a late night snack.

    i want to party, party

    I’ve applied to UofT for a life science program and i chose Innis college as my first college choice. I wasnt sure which college to choose and so I chose Innis because of its single rooms, as I generally enjoy a certain amount of privacy. Since then I’ve decided to research on the social scene in Innis (in case I do get accepted) but I’ve been getting results ranging from “Innis is an amazing place where you’ll have the best time of your university life” all the way to “I wouldn’t live in Innis even if they paid me”. So i was wondering..what Is the social scene in Innis? I’m not a complete party animal but I do enjoy a certain amount of partying, so I’d also love to know how Innis is in that perspective. I’d love to have the same info about Chestnut residence as well..Thanks a lot in advance

    Warning: you are about to receive an ominous answer to your question (sorry, there’s jsut?no other way).

    It depends on the situation you get. For example:

    chill don + crazy roommates(Innis)/floor(Chestnut) = wiping puke out of your hair on a tuesday morning

    strict don + crazies = running around rez in your?boxers and getting chased down?by your don

    any kind of don + boooooring room/floor mates = getting really high grades because you have nothing else to but study. Hopefully your the kind of person who can make fun out of a can of beans.
    Be honest on your residence assessment. If you want to party, say that you want to party and pray to the residence gods that you get put with awesome people.

    no .. NO .. please no, not chestnut

    Hi Aska,

    I’ve read on some forum that if you aren’t accepted to your first choice of residence as an engineer, you’re sent straight to 89 Chestnut (given that your first choice wasn’t Chestnut, duh!). However, you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet.. so I decided to ask you (how ironic, right?).

    My situation is that I would prefer going to Innis but I don’t know if my average is good enough, as I heard it should be quite competitive for
    engineers. Also I’m an international student with grades from a weird weird grading system (something similar to the ETCS grading system.. ever heard of that? o.O), and I haven’t quite figured out how to convert these grades yet.. so I? actually have no clue whatsoever what my average is atm. Anyway my second choice would’ve been New, but I might put it as my first if my application will go directly from Innis to Chestnut (Reason: Guess I’m a just a spoiled kid, who doesn’t wanna walk 20 min to school each morning -.-‘).

    Hope you can help me, even though you’re “just” a student.

    The walk from Chestnut is a tough one in the winter. I nearly broke down and accepted defeat on my walks during snowstorms. But Chestnut does have the best food (like top notch chefs – for real), a cleaning service, personal shower, etc) So, if for some reason you do end up there, your life will not end.
    Innis is a rather small college but they do reserve a large number of spots for engineers (60 spots to be specific)

    I think the information you received about Innis is incorrect. I know that Arts & Science students are accepted into the Innis college and apply for residence and do not meet the grade requirement are placed (ever so gently) into Chestnut. As an Engineer, you receive 4 choices and I’m assuming that if you don’t get into your first choice, they move onto your second.

    Here’s the deal, call student housing services at: 416.978.8045.? Explain your situation and they can advice you as to your best options.
    I know I know … getting sent to yet another resource.

    – The colleges DO NOT affect you academically; no matter what college? your associated with you can take any of the Arts and Science classes offered.

    – YES there are duds, stinky folk, and hermits at all colleges

    There’s ton of things to consider when applying, your interests, size of college, which one had the best funnels and most promiscuous members. Check out the ranking site (yah U of T has thought of everything) and see all the specifics you should consider.

    Keep in mind: the smallest Colleges will only consider you if they rank them number one (snots); so Innis, Trinity and Victoria College

    Trinity and Victoria Colleges also make their decision based on appliciant profiles.

    Academic cut-offs also change from year to year based on size and range of demand

    Perk: You get to live out your dream of being Ron Weasley. The residence looks like a scene from the Great Hall, AND you wear robes to your meals (seriously, I’m not messing with you).     I actually did field research for this question, by walking into the office of the St. Hilda’s Dean Of Students to ask her this very same question. She told me that many students request single rooms, more than they have available. While it is usually not possible to switch after the residence has assigned you a room, you are welcome to contact the residence here.

    questions from a boy and his chinese mother!

    Hi Aska: I’m an upcoming student, currently live in China, and about to head to U of T in several weeks. I found your website really helping. As I trace back to earlier questions, I discovered many important details that I missed for a first year student. And I still have some questions about academic life and… something embarrassing (LOL)
    First question is about the POSTs. The handbook said that to satisfy the BA/BSc degree, I have to enroll in at least 2 major or 1 specialist programs. What I wanted to know is, can I enroll in 3 majors or 1 specialist and 1major program? Is that possible to be completed in four years? Should I pay additional tuition fee for that?
    I know there is some scholarships available for international student. Can I apply for more than one scholarships at a same time? Is there any limitations about the number of scholarships I applied for? I’m not greedy, but the tuition fee is really expensive (Honestly, more than $20,000), I wish to know if there’s some way to make the situation a little better.
    And the final, blockbuster question is from my mum. I bet this is the first time in aska history, that somebody want to know if the Innis Residence offer bedclothes, and should her son carry his bedding set for several thousand miles all the way from Beijing to Toronto (Oh, mom!).

    Hello there all the way from Toronto! (But on the internet, we’re the same.) Don’t feel embarrassed by your inquisitive nature or your darling mum. And congratulations on making Aska history!!!

    First things first. While it is possible to complete a specialist and major, or three majors, you have to consider your time and course registration. Many students end up with these combinations because they take courses that overlap, or have interdisciplinary seminars. No one is stopping you from taking as many courses as you need and want to, in order to complete your program, but it is good to keep in mind that a Specialist is 10 courses, and a major is seven. If you have to fill to fill five breadth requirements, plus 10 courses as is…maybe you won’t be able to give yourself the wiggle room needed. Talk to your registrar about your ambitious plans and they will help you (I promise!)

    You might finish your program in four years, or more, depending on how many courses you take (many students find themselves taking 3-5 courses a year, which designates you as a “full time student.”) There is no additional fees, depending on whether you complete a specialist or a major, just the fees towards courses and other compulsory fees for student societies. Keep that in mind.

    In terms of scholarships, by all means, apply for as many as you humanly can apply for! No one is going to be aware of how many scholarships you are applying for, and if you are eligible for more than one scholarship (and you receive more than one scholarship) – that is totally sweet-ass-sweet. Admissions and awards lists some scholarships on their website that you might be eligible for, though it gets a little trickier for international students. Your registrar should have some advice about good places to hit up, and while you may not be eligible for OSAP, there are some bank loans with low interest.

    In response to your mom, all beds come from the Innis Residence stripped bare. (Which is actually a good thing, considering.) Bring your own bed clothes or buy some new sheets at a local department store. I recommend The Bay, for that touch of classic Canadiana.

    i’mmmmm moving out!

    As the procrastinator I am, only researched about UofT’s residence buildings this week.
    (I’m already accepted to Innis, but I’m having major doubts now).
    I hear Innis is a really quiet, studious, and self-contained residency, and that is
    definitely not what I’m looking for. I picked it because I assumed that the majority of
    my peers would be taking courses at Innis College, ie Cinema and Rhetoric, thus having
    similar interests.

    Basically, could I have a breakdown of what type of people are at and what the atmosphere
    is of New College, Vic, and Woodsworth, along with Innis, incase what I’ve heard is
    false? I’d like to be in a social atmosphere with other kids who are in the Arts, and
    it’s probably too late to do a switcheroo since the 28th is in a week, but it’s worth a
    shot!

    Also, if I change residency from Innis, does that mean I can no longer take courses at
    Innis College?

    Hi there! I am here to crush your possible dreams.

    I called the Innis Residence coordinator to discuss switching residences. As a student of Innis College, you have to stay at Innis Residence. You can however, take whatever courses you please. The program you’re in and the college (and residence) you’re affiliated with have nothing to do with it. Colleges are for administrative purposes only. More of a way of organizing you, than restricting you from courses of study.

    The only time colleges however matter is when it comes to residences. If you were to pull out of Innis now, you would have to eat the $600 deposit charge. The only other residence that would be available to you is 89 Chestnut.

    Plus I can totally vouch for Innis Residence! As a former Cinema Studies student, I went into Innis Res not knowing what to expect and found a highly social atmosphere. Residences are a crapshoot when it comes to who your roommates are and who you’ll meet, but Innis is a big and artsy residence. I think you’ll find some like-minded souls.

    Also keep in mind that: Most of your best friends in university won’t come from residence (despite what you might think the first few weeks of school), anyway. They’ll come from meeting people in the same classes as you, and from getting involved (U of T has about a bazillion clubs and societies). Innis Residence has its good and great points, too – you won’t have to share a sketchy shower down the hall, survive on a gross meal plan or have to sleep in the same room as your roommate.

    How does roommate selection/assigning work at U of T? Not sure if you’ve covered this, but I searched your site and didn’t find anything.

    They give you and everyone else in the residence a questionnaire to fill out. And then, because they’re sadistic, they pair you up with the people who they know you’ll hate. Common roommates include:

    1) know-it-alls who will shut themselves away all day when they’re not talking to you about the philosophical and social implications of Dido and Aeneas (just because you mentioned Dido’s new single) or making jokes about integration or Marx or glycerophospholipids

    2) those super-social types that exude an indescribable hold on everyone and end up becoming everybody’s best friend — except for you, because YOU are just the most completely unbiased on Earth, and hence you can see that their REAL agenda is to brainwash everybody else and then take over the world

    3) sloth types that leave banana peels on the kitchen table, leaves flies swarming the garbage, and somehow make the toilet REALLY REALLY dirty and yet never clean it up (oh gosh, the imagery)

    4) vain types that walk like they’re in a never-ending beauty pageant, and will continuously remind you of how good they look, and whose only hobbies are: spending hours putting make-up on, spending hours walking around in their underwear/speedo/towel as if they’re God’s gift to the world (if male), buying 5 pieces of clothing every week (both genders)

    5) baboons.

    ……..uh…. I somehow ended up publishing an unfinished post when I was trying to save my “draft”. Oh well. I guess I’ll continue it now because my job description says that I have to give you some GOOD information in every post. Hopefully you didn’t read my post and then run home crying because I didn’t give you any GOOD information.

    Anyway, it really depends on what residence you are living in. I’m not about to go search up the policies every residence on campus just for you, so I’ll just list a few. I know that at Innis, you complete a form on which you specify how clean you are, how loud you are, how late you usually sleep, the types of music that you listen to, whether you’d mind your roommates having guests over… etc. etc. After that, they match you up with people who they think will be compatible with you. If you have friends (like aska), and they intend to stay at the residence that you’re staying at, you can also specify that on your form and they will do their best to put you in the same room. I EXPECT (but do not guarantee) that other residences have similar policies. For instance, UC states that they match you up based on your housing application form.

    I don’t know what college you’re in/going to be in, so I can’t really help much in this regard. Just search up the residence rules if and when you get accepted.
