second thoughts already?

Hi there,

I have been accepted to study cinema studies at Innis College for September 2009. I will not be living on residence and would like to know the fees per term (books, equipment etc.)

Thank you.

Not a whole lotta juice in that one eh? Or so it seems…

First of all, some technicalities. When you applied to UofT on OUAC website, you may have requested cinema studies. This is just a trick uoft does to let them know into which category they can funnel the applications- humanities, social science, science, etc. That sad outcome of this little bureaucratic fib is that you might mistakenly assume that you’ve been admitted into the cinema studies program. Which you haven’t. If you look at your admission letter, it should say something like, “you have been admitted to humanities UofT, Innis college, blah blah”. Hey hey slow down there. Don’t freak out or make any angry phone calls. Everyone is in the same boat here. You can definitely apply for the cinema studies program at the end of your first year. You’ll have to take the intro to film course or whatever the 1st year requirements are for cinema studies. And if your fabulous and pretentious enough, you just might make it.

As for your second question, I’m not sure. See, the university has devised a diabolical plan to instate a flat fee. This means that your tuition fee will be the equivalent of 5 full-year courses, which amounts to something like 5,500 dollars per year. Up until now students had a modular tuition plan, in which they paid per course. (I guess you’re screwed take 2).

I’m not sure about books. It varies from student to student. I imagine that you’re planning to take a humanities-oriented course combo. Usually that means an introductory textbook and a reader. Admissions and Awards approximate book expenses at about $700. Sometimes you can get used books for less, but intro to film textbook notoriously updates its edition on an annual basis.

Welcome to UofT!!!
