    2.0 too tough to do?

Hey, I’m a first year student at UTM, I haven’t been doing too good this year, my GPA will be hopefully be either 2.0 or it could be below it. The two majors I want to apply to require a GPA of at least 2.0. I am taking a summer course to hopefully bring up my mark. But.. what happens if I don’t have the required GPA even after summer school? What should I do?

Please help me, thanks so much.

    ———————————————

    Hey there!

If you don’t get the given GPA even after summer school, unfortunately, you’re just going to have to wait until you do. You can try appealing to the program head and seeing if they can do a little something-something to make some magic happen for you, but your best bet is to power through that summer course to ground you at, at least, a 2.0.

However, if that doesn’t work, then you’ll have to find yourself a random Type 1 program to get by with while you enroll in courses that’ll boost your CGPA so that you can enroll after second year.

Just be wary of the program requirements for after that! Sometimes they can get harsher. For example, after first year, to get into the English specialist program in first year requires a 2.0, whereas in second year you’ll need a 2.3.

  • probation

why don’t we just ignore that extra course over there…

Hello, to be on academic probation, is your overall gpa calculated or just your gpa for 4 courses? I took 5 full year courses and think I failed one.

    ?????????

    Hey hey

That would be great if we could just ignore that one random course that we regret taking and that totally drags down our average?

But unfortunately, you?re put on academic probation when your CGPA is below 1.5. Meaning it’s cumulative. Meaning it takes everything into account. Meaning all five of your courses will be considered, not just the non-failed four.

    Later days!

some of the swankiest places to stay

What’s the best Res for first year students at U of T?

    Thanks

    ?????????

    Hey!

Uhhh well to be honest I?m a veteran commuter, but of all the places I?ve visited/slept over at/loitered in, I?ll give two of my favourites!

Chestnut Residence: With its history as a hotel, this particular residence is for the ballin, which I say partly to be a tool, and also because it?s incredibly expensive in comparison to other residences. However, your beds are huge, as are your rooms, since you?re literally in OLD HOTEL ROOMS. Likewise, the food is great. On Sundays there?s an omelette bar. Like, what could be better, right?

Innis College: Now this is an acquired taste, I suppose. The Innis Res is an apartment-style place, meaning you share your living space with three or four other people but get your own room. There?s no cafeteria (although there?s the Innis Caf? across the street), but you get a kitchen so you can cook your own meals.

  • architecture

dammit daniels why is your site so useless

I heard that since the architecture is only offering an BA degree, which would sound really bad, so I was wondering if I could purchase a physics major along with architecture studies, so it would be more competitive when I apply for grade school which students from Waterloo and McGill which they offer B.Sc.(Arch). I heard since is a Honors of BA, so it is kinda require u take double major? But physic is a science program, is it possible for architecture student to major in physics? And do we still received a HBA if we has a major in physics and architecture studies? And I been an artist since little, I have ten years of painting experience, but is it require for all the student to take those studio courses? Can I just take the final exam and pass instead, I don’t feel like wasting time on the thing that I’m already good at, I heard since the program doesn’t require portfolio, lots of people actually have no visual art base at all.

    ?????????

    Ah, I remember you.

    Okay so:

    • Excuse you, but there’s nothing wrong with a BA. Arts ftw!
    • You can do the Architectural Studies Major Program in combination with Physics, sure, but for the most part, the Daniels website is completely useless and I barely understand it soooo I’m quite lost on what the difference between that and the general architecture BA is…
    • If you double major in an art and a science, you’re allowed to pick what kind of degree you graduate with.
    • If those studio courses are program/degree requirements, then yes, you have to take them. They’re required.
    • Can you just take the final exam and like… not do the coursework? Ha! If only. Heck no, dude. Don’t you think everyone would be doing that if it were an option? You obviously have to go to class and do the work unless your prof makes you some super sweet deal, which I highly doubt he or she will.

    aska to the rescue!

    Hey,

I’m thinking of transferring to utm from Brock. Im going to end up with a 70-73 average. i was thinking about transferring to either commerce or econ. do they have different admission requirements and if not could i get into commerce with that average? Also if i get accepted to econ can i ask for a re-consideration into commerce?

    thanks,
    dark knight

    ———————————————

    Batman,

Both programs at UTM call for at least a B (around a 74-76) according to Admissions, but that grade is competitive, soooooo try your hardest to bump your GPA a bit. “Competitive” means that there’s quite likely going to be a fair amount of applicants, so that set average could very well go up.

  • grad school

i just love school sooo much

    Hi there,

So I’m currently a student wrapping up my third year and basically my GPA sucks. I would need a 3.2 in my last two years or higher and a cGPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered for the vast majority of the grad schools I’m looking at. I was wondering if I have any chance of being accepted to a good school for example, Mcgill ( the above mentioned requirements were for this school). My current GPA is about 2.4 and I really need it to be higher. If you don’t make the GPA is that the end for you? How much do grad schools take extra curriculars and reference letters into consideration? Hopefully all hope is not lost but I could really use some direction.

    Thanks!

    ?????????

    Hey there,

Most grad schools take their minimum CGPAs seriously, but they often fluctuate depending on the applicant pool of that year. So say the standard is 3.0 but there aren’t many people applying. If that’s the case, they’ll lower the average a bit. However, that can work the other way too.

Although there are some schools that are quite rigid and won’t even consider students if they don’t meet their 3.3 requirement, even if you’re literally at a 3.28. Trust me.

But if you don’t make the necessary GPA, that’s not NECESSARILY the end for you. It just means you can’t be picky and that you may have to expand your search and apply to a lot of different grad schools. I mean some can be really hard to get into — e.g. University of Toronto, McGill, UBC — but some can be incredibly easy.

Now extra curriculars and reference letters come in to play depending on the program. The latter, yes, is always a factor, but to be honest I don’t think the former matters all that much unless your extra curriculars are actually relevant…

Also be careful with your letters! Don’t just ask a prof to write you one — ask if they can write you a POSITIVE one.

    Cheers!

    Angel,

The best I can do in terms of giving you a link to some sort of “askastudent: engineering edition” is send you over to the engineering category.

I won’t tell you where my super secret lair is based, but I will tell you I answer questions about UofT, UTSC, and UTM alike and all their faculties and departments, so feel free to send in whatever you’re confused about.

I shall research your research for you to the best of my abilities. 😉

living in loretto or stay at st. mike’s?

    Hi!

I received offers of residence to Loretto Women’s Res as well as St Mike’s,

which one do you know/think would be better?

    -Newly Admitted

    ?????????

    Newly Admitted,

Your question makes me happy. Firstly, you have a nickname. Secondly, you’re not asking about Subject POSts. So four for you, New Admitted. You go, Newly Admitted! 😀

Anyway, of those two… I suppose I would say go with St. Mike’s to be entirely honest.

But that’s just me, so let’s look at some facts. Loretto is all-female, whereas St. Mike’s is co-ed, so I prefer the latter. Loretto is kind of pushed off to the edge of campus, while St. Mikes is closer to Queen’s Park, therefore closer to my classes — although Loretto is closer to Indigo, which has a pretty Christmas tree come winter! And then between Loretto and Sorbarra Hall (one of the St. Mike’s residences), I find Loretto has prettier rooms.

So personally, again, I’m leaning towards St. Mike’s, but why don’t you do some tours so you can make your own judgement?

  • subject POST,  UTM

just in case we weren’t clear on the subject posts….

Hi! I go to UTM, and by the end of April I will have 3.5 credits. To enroll in the CCIT Major program, I need at least 4.0 credits. I have decided to take a second year Sociology course over the summer to fulfill the 4.0 credit requirement. Should I wait till after the summer session ends to apply for the Subject Post? Or can I do it before?

    ———————————————

    Yo.

As explained many many many many times, students enroll in Subject POSts only after they’ve gotten 4.0 FCE, so yes, you’re going to have to wait until the end of the summer session when you have your last 0.5 credit.

    Cheers!

may may why so far away

I’m currently a student in grade 12 from B.C. This year my avgs are not that good since I took so many APs and I was away for two weeks. So after calculating using my English 12, AP Chemistry 12, AP studio Arts drawing, and Mandarin 12, which are 76%, 93%, 91%, and 93%. Since my English is too low, my avg is pulled down to an 88%. My one idea is about a painting I done base on my perspective on Vancouver’s buildings in downtown. I don’t know if it is creative enough. I know lots of people who applied with avgs of 90% or above, and we all received the same message on our states which is file completed will have a decision in LATE may. I got a rejection from U of T civil engineering already, and I’m really nervous now. So I wanna ask, with my avg, do I still have a chance? On the admission site, it said susseful applicants are among the top three in their class… Which I’m not. I was, in regular class, but I transferred to AP, people their recived full scholarship form U of Penn..

    ?????????

    Hey hey!

Is an 88 average good enough for architecture…

To be honest, I don’t know what to tell you. Generally, we say “high-80s” for architecture, but when you factor in the many, many applicants and limited spaces, you arrive at a minimum in the low 90s. BUT, at the same time, that can work in the opposite way and bring it down.

So yeah. I’m going to go with the politically correct not-yes/not-no answer and say that it all depends on the applicant pool.

Your average is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but I guess you’ll have to wait til late-May to know whether or not architecture agrees with me on that…

  • UTSC

    an entire year without utsc

    Hello askastudent,

I’m in my 3rd year and I go to UTSC where you have to get more than 1.6 to get out of probation. I am in a terrible mess. I was placed on probation end of April 2012 and in Fall 2012 my sessional gpa was 1.57. My winter semester looked okay until now, I tried calculating my gpa and it doesnt work out to 1.6. And just to make things worse, I have an unpaid tuition fee remaining of like 3,700 – which I only have about 2 weeks to pay off or else I will be denied? further registration for the entire year. Now I’m at risk of being suspended and denied further registration due to financial reasons. What should I do? Should I just take this year off? I don’t think I have much else I can do…

    Signed,
    Very worried UTSC student

    ———————————————

    Very Worried UTSC Student,

Why do you say you’ll be denied registration for the entire year (2013-14)? From what I’m reading, you’re only really denied registration until you pay off the debt of the first year. So say you pay off your $3700 in June — theoretically, ROSI should allow you back in since you’re done with those payments… right?

    Waaaaah UTSC policies confuse me.

But yeah, at the same time, your pending suspension is another deciding factor.

So should you take a year off? Maybe. That’s entirely up to you, but if you keep falling into this situation where a) you can’t keep up the grades that b) you are PAYING for, then there isn’t really a point in you being there right? Sorry. That might have been a little mean.

What I’m trying to say is that a year off can’t hurt. It’ll give you time to consider if university is actually for you. Likewise, it’ll give you time to make some moniez and be prepared for the next year so that you won’t be in the same unfortunate situation.

But keep your chin up! You never know how you’ll do this year in terms of whether or not suspension actually happens. 🙂

    drowning in student loans,

  • UTM

we are never ever ever getting back together… if you don’t enroll in a post

    Whaddup yo aska!

Anywho, I go to utm and by the end of April I will have 3.5 credits. I want to enrol in the Digital Enterprise Management subject POSt but I won’t have all the prerequisites until the end of August. In the summer term I am taking 1.5 credits. But I heard that if you have 4 credits and you don’t enrol in a subject post, you will be deregistered and removed from all your courses. Is this true?? Because I don’t plan on applying to the subject post until the end of August, when I will have all prereqs and 5.0 credits.

Also, lets say worst comes to worst and I don’t get in the subject post. Can I apply for a sociology subject post instead, drop all the SOC courses, and take the Digital Enterprise Management Courses that don’t have restrictions? Then just reapply next year?

I’m just sorta worried because I’m hearing there are consequences if you don’t apply after 4.0 credits.

    Thankssss!

    ———————————————

    Yo.

The consequence of failing to enroll in a Subject POSt at the end of the academic session where you get at least 4.0 FCE is to lose a limb.

    Kind of.

    Sort of.

UTM states in bolded letters: Failure to do so will result in your Fall-Winter Session registration being blocked, and limit your access to some high-demand courses. Totes dramatic, right? It’s almost frightening.

But you’re not necessarily abandoned, so much as you are denied. So if you end up with 5.0 FCE in August, then yes, you’re going to have to enroll in a Subject POSt.

Now if you can’t get into Digital Enterprise Management, then that’s okay! Lots of people fail to get into particular POSts right after first year and like you suggested, mostly go into somewhat related programs to get by with. So yeah, feel free to go into sociology or whatever other program you’d like and just apply to the courses without restrictions on your enrollment date in July, along with some GPA-boosting electives! 🙂

    Cheers!

  • ROSI,  stats

and for once, the fault does not fall on rosi

Hi, I just wondering how to delete the subject post. I entrolled Applied Statistics ,which is a specialist in 2012 summer. But, now I want to change the subject post. Every time I delete or change the subject post. It shows an error. Just like this:

A problem was encountered and details are as follows:
6703 – Subject POSt is not eligible for WEB enrolment

So, how to delete this subject post?

    ———————————————

    Heyo!

Okay so this whole stats not being particularly friendly on ROSI pickle has actually been a bit of a thing for the past few weeks. I had someone come in three times in utter confusion over why she couldn’t change her stats minor to a major, but apparently a lot of people have been having these sorts of problems.

However, no fear, for a little birdie has told me that stats has resolved their problem, so you SHOULD be able to delete your POSt now.

If you’re still stuck though, let me know!

    love the sunshine,
