    SLP punk

Hey,so I was wondering what are the perquisites that I need in order to?get into arts and humanities program?I’m planning on going on into the SLP program after.?Oh and what grade range should i be in as well?

    ???????????????

SLP Punk … or is it SLC … meh,

The prereqs depend on the program that you are applying to. All require grade 12 U English, but many have additional requirements (such as certain maths).

Again, your grade range depends on the program but generally for humanities they say low to mid 80s. Saying this, it really depends on the applicant pool for the given year. If a whole bunch of smarty pants apply then the grade range will be higher.

IB(e) Wanting My Hard Hat and Admissions Package

    Hi Aska,

I am in grade 12 right now doing my IB and have decided to come to UofT next year for mechanical engineering. Well, the thing is and very frankly the site says that you need to have more than a 30 to be considered for admission (should i get about 32 or 34?) also, i read that the university does not consider EE and TOK points, any idea about that I take Math and Physics HL and Chem and English at standard. My O level grades were decent with a 4A’s including Math and Physics, and 4B’s including Chem, English and Additional Mathematics. I will have a 5 in physics and Maths and will get close to 30 (that is what I am not sure of). My extracurricular are pretty good so the main question is . . do I stand a chance in getting accepted? Any thoughts you have

    Yo yo Furqan!!

Here is what the engineering men with their suits and hard hats are saying,

International Baccalaureate Candidates must be completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with the following required courses:

    • Mathematics (Math Studies is not acceptable)
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
    • English

While most of our programs require higher scores, students with a predicted score of at least 30 will be considered for admission to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Applicants with a predicted score of below 4 in any of the pre-requisite subjects will not be considered for admission. Consideration is given for pre-requisite courses completed at the Higher level. Additional points awarded for theory of knowledge and the extended essay are not considered by the Admissions Committee.

Please note that the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering does not grant advanced standing credit for courses completed in the IB Diploma program.

If you apply with a predicted score of lower than 30, I can only imagine what they would do with your application.

    Side bar Ted:

Top 5 ways to dispose of refused applications

    1) The Burner

    2) Larger Shredder

    3) Feed it to a Dog

    4) or … a baby

    5) Most Likely Though … They Just Hit A Delete Button (we don’t even have bottled water on campus anymore, odds are they got rid of all paper ages ago)

… ok that might be a little dramatic, but you get the point

Unfortunately admissions is one of the more mysterious aspects of the university ride. The applicant pool changes from year to year. So if luck has it that you are in a pool of super geniuses your overall points will have to be much higher than 30. Saying that though, it could theoretically work the other way too. If you are in a year of all dummies or almost no one applies to the program, then they would have to start considering lower than 30 (this is so incredibly unlikely it pains me to even mention it)

I say to just work your ass of for the remainder of your IB and apply no matter what because you never know!

happy crawling into a cave and studying your life away like the rest of us,

  • admissions,  repeating course

    repeat a course, a course, a course

is it ok to retake a course in high school? i am planning to apply forensic psychology at UTM and they need one math and bio in high school. my friend said it’s ok as long as you write a letter tyo explain why did you retake the course. im so confused!

    ———————————————

    Hey!

Here is the official University of Toronto response:

    ” Repeated Courses
While the University of Toronto recognizes that there may be valid reasons for a student to repeat a course, in general we urge students do as well as possible on their first attempt. In considering students for admission and scholarships, the University reserves the right to give preference to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course. ”

Now here’s my unofficial U of T response. What I’ve heard is the case is if it’s a close call between you and other students (I.e you are right at the cutoff), they will consider your repeated coure. In that situation, they will choose the student who got the awesome marks first time around.

Also, this reponse varies per department. I’ve head that the engineers are a little more snotty with repeated courses.

My advice is do well the first time and be the one to bump the other fools out of the running … buuuuuut I’m also assuming you’re asking this question because you already didn’t do well in a course. I that case, theres not much you can do but to retake the course or build a time machine.

I am a secondary school student in BC. I want to get into the actuarial science program. I want to ask the average mark needed to get into the actuarial program. Thank you!

    ———————————————
dude, you don’t need to brag that you have an iPhone. My little samsung that’s screen is so scratched that I can’t read my text anymore is just as cool ok?

For science, they usually say mid to high 80’s. Depending on the applicant pool, this number could be higher or lower.

    short and sweet for once.

    Heya!

Has the new minimum cgpa for utm commerce 2011 been announced yet? Would appreciate it if you could help me out, thanks!

    ———————————————

    Hey man,

I’ve looked at their website and it doesn’t look like it’s been released yet. Cryptic, no? That really sucks because Round 2 of Subject PoSt applyin’ is set to begin and I bet you’d like to know if you have a shot, right? The best thing I can suggest then, is hassling the UTM Commerce program (who can be contacted here), disclosing your current CGPA and seeing if you have a shot. Bonne chance!

    u of t is a heartbreaker

So if I do not get into the program I want, which is Life Science, will I get an alternate offer for another science course at St. George, being the campus I initial applied to?

    ???????????????

Ooh, a follow up question! Aska loves those.

Basically if you are not accepted into Life Sciences at St. George, you will not be accepted into U of T. It’s possible that you might get an offer to UTM or UTSC instead (though I don’t think that usually happens). You can always apply to transfer in another year, or re apply for the following year if you do not get in.

Sorry if that’s a little heartbreaking.

is u of t racist? huh.

    Hi.

I’ve just been offered admission in the UTSC Co-op Social Sciences program.
The thing is, I (motivated by a little less than a billion reasons), kind of changed my mind.
    Uh-oh.
Anyways, by the time I decided that I really wanted to apply to UTSG, it was past the application deadline.

I called UT and was told that I should send them a nice letter telling them WHHYYYYY I failed to send in the application on time.
So I did. Also, I included the fact that people in downtown offered me a place to stay AFTER I applied to UTSC, potentially reducing my financial burden by a couple thousand dollars.

Here’s what worries me: does the university only accept late applications from really top Asian students? Because I’m an average Asian student.

Or do they mostly look at the reason for the late application and the content of the appeal itself?

    Thanks.

    From,

    Average Asian Student.

    ———————————————

    Dear ASS,

Let’s make one thing clear first – the fact that you are Asian has NOTHING to do with whether your late application will be accepted. By missing your deadline and not having that compelling a reason for changing your mind (you are not even an international student!), U of T might brush you aside for reasons as simple as you simply NOT COMPLETING A FORM ON TIME. Coupled with your average marks and average Asian ability, I have no idea whether or not the university will admit you. Have you made a more convincing case by meeting your possible college registar in person? Are there any last-minute strings you can pull? Try your hardest. It will just come down to whether you’ve made a convincing enough argument.

Basically U of T is like a choosy girl. If a guy isn’t bending over backwards after he loses interest in being with her, it’s not really worth it to be give him a second chance. Please don’t use your race as a point of contention again. And welcome hopefully, ASS?

    Welcome.

am i in yet, or what?

What is the cut off percentage for the program
Life Sciences (including Psychology) [HUMAN BIOLOGY-HEALTH/DISEASE]
at the University of Toronto St. George campus? Right now I have a 79% overall, do I stand a chance of getting accepted??

    ???????????????

Contrary to popular belief, Askastudent is not like that creepy genie in Big that determines and grants your every wish and command. (We do accept quarters though.) So while I can’t say for sure whether or not you’ll get in, it doesn’t look good. Usually for life sciences, the cut-offs or lowest averages accepted are in the mid-80s – it’s a competitive program. Also this being mid May and you haven’t heard anything yet leads me to the unfortunate belief that you probably have not been accepted. Sorry my friend. Let me know how it works out.

    askastudent cannot predict the future

    Hi there,

I recently applied to UofT Life Sciences at Trinity College St. George.

Would you be so kind as to give me my chances of acceptance from the IB program?

    SL English: 4
    SL History: 4
    SL French: 5
    HL Maths: 4
    HL Chemistry: 5
    HL Biology: 6

    Oh yeah,

I have +3 Bonus points, so the total is 31.

(Basically I need some assurance right now because two friends got admitted with 36 and 43, and I’m just stressed that I won’t get in).

    Thanks!

    ???????????????

Hey pal. Hopefully you’ve heard something from U of T now that it’s April 14th, but Askastudent cannot give you an assurance whether or not you’ll get in. Admission to Trinity College is seperate from Life Sciences, so there’s a chance that you might get accepted to Life Sciences (which usually needs a mid to high 80s – or even higher! – to be accepted) and not Trinity (which makes you write an essay about an abstract object).

Please let me know if you got into U of T and sorry about the late response. If so, we can start planning how you’ll prank the dean and win over your ultimate crush! Or maybe that’s just the plot of Van Wilder.

dubai + engineers = phallic buildings

Hi, I’m a grade 11 student currently and my 1st semester average was 86.5. I got mid 90’s in Math and Physics but i really screwed up in English (74). People are telling me that this mark will really affect my application because i want to apply to U of T Engineering Science next year. If by the end of this year, I bring it up to a 88 or so, will it be enough to cover the ground that i lost in my low English mark? How much exactly do i need to have a credible application? On another note, I just joined a school in Ontario this year and before that i was studying in another country. Do i now need to take TOEFL or IELTS ( i was in Dubai )? Another question, does the mark for summer school for an extra course like english (not a fail) be counted as a little bit less? Another thing, does U of T give credit for SATs?
Plz answer my questions (i know there’s a lot). Thanks a lot!!!!

    ???????????????

    Whaddup eaga-beava

First off, lets make sure we have all the admissions facts straight. The admissions requirements that the university are looking for are from grade 12. Don’t get me wrong, they do look at your grade 11 marks but your future is not determined on them.

Here’s what the engineers have as your requirements:

    Grade 12 Curriculum Requirements

Candidates in the Ontario Grade 12 curriculum must be completing the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, and the following six Grade 12 U/M courses:

    • English (ENG4U)
    • Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U)
    • Chemistry (SCH4U)
    • Physics (SPH4U)
    • one of:
      • Advanced Functions (MHF4U)*
      • Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U)
      • Biology (SBI4U)
      • Earth and Space Science (SES4U)
      • Geometry and Discrete Mathematics (MGA4U)
    • 1 additional U or M course
    • Proof of English Facility
      1. Evaluate if you are required to present proof of English Facility.
        www.adm.utoronto.ca/eft
      2. If proof of English?Facility is required: If you have achieved the minimum required English facility test score and have/are taking ENG4U,?a minimum of 60% in this course is required for admissions.

Please note that individual prerequisite courses must have at least 70% or higher. The Admissions Committee takes a look at a candidates overall academic history with emphasis on the prerequisite course average.

    * MHF4U – It is expected that all students will have completed the Advanced Functions course?as a co- or pre-requisite for Calculus & Vectors. However, in calculating the average, the?highest mark of the five elective courses will be used.

In that long slew of information, they also answer your English requirement question … click the link … doooo it.

Dude … i feel like your superman and Clark Kent, if you’re from Dubai/Ontario why would you have taken your SAT’s (but no you don’t get credits for taking the test)? and if you are considering retaking English in the summer, the school may consider that against you. If it comes down to a tie with you and another student who only took English once, rather then a wrestling match in pudding they would take the other person.

    Phew. I need a drink

    love,

    aska

I want my admissions letter NOW

    Hi
I have sent in all the documents that U of T wanted from me…they have updated everything and my application status shows its still under review. I was just wondering till when can I get my admissions decision? I have an average over 92% and a strong extra-curricular application. I have applied to Engineering at U of T St George Campus. Please reply if you have any idea that when can i get an admission decision.
    Thanks.

    ???????????????

    patience grasshopper, patience.

Generally speaking admissions letters start to go out at the end of April and up until the last part of May. Some early admissions might be offered earlier than that.

If you are really concerned and would like exact date I would give the department of Engineering a shout at: 416-978-3872.

    IGCSE/IB/ih8u

    Hello. 🙂
I’ve been thinking recently, and I’ve decided to change my school next year, for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, the school I really want to go to goes from IGCSE in Year 11 (Which is what I’m going to do in my current school this year) to IB in Year 12 and 13. I’m having a bit of a problem there though. We had representatives from U of T come to my school and they told me in the case of A levels, you only require AS levels, i.e. just the Year 12. However, since I’m most likely changing to an IB school, do I need to do both Years 12 and 13, or can I just stick to 12?
I would much rather do only Year 12 though, so I’d appreciate it if this email wasn’t ignored. :PI’ve had a lot of other universities (which I emailed to for specific doubts related to them) just ignored my emails. 🙁
    Thanks for reading! x

    ???????????????

    Mystery dude X,

The reason people have been ignoring your question is beacuse it is confusing. Go to your highschool guidance counsellor and ask them. I know they might smell a little funny or you’ve seen kids leaving their office shaking in fear, but they know the answers to everything.

    peace and love,

they have life sci at utm, who knew

    Hi Aska,
I would just like to ask you if you know which mark update is more important? The marks that are uploaded now, which for semestered school are the first semester credits or the mark update which is later in march this year? My marks are not so good and im only a percents away from an 86 average. I have applied to Life Sciences and I also wanted to ask what are my chances of getting into utm with about an 81 avg?
    thanks

    ???????????????

    yo yo yoooooo

Here are the specific date information taken fromt he Future Students section on the Innis website:

Your high school will send to OUAC any final first-semester grades and current full-year midterm grades by 15 February 2011.

Toward the end of April, your high school will provide to OUAC your midterm grades for second-semester courses and interim grades for full-year courses.

Meaning that both grades are considered. If your current grades aren’t high enough for the program you might not be admitted on early admission but if you get your shit together this semester you might get admitted in the regular admissions time.

I’m not entirely sure what the admissions average for Life Sci at Utm are. Its something that changes each year based on the number of applicants and their grades. At the St.George campus they generally say to have a mid to high 80’s average, but as it’s UTM and not quite so snobby so?the average might be a little lower.

Hopefully that helped and didn’t shatter all your dreams,

    love always,
    aska
