    lying liars who lie

    Hello aska,

So as a requirement for transfer admissions to UofT, I need at least a 70% in ENG4U. Unfortunately? I was an idiot in highschool and ended up with 3
percent below requirement. I have spent the past couple of days calling all campuses’ talking to different reps asking what I should do. However I keep getting different responses:

One says I should take a second university English course

One said I should try retaking ENG4U if I can

And another said that since I’m a second year student, my two years of studies should cancel out my horrible mark. Oh and she said everyone else
    is lying.

I am frustrated at the fact that everyone keeps giving me different responses, and how their response applies to all campuses, and then I will
hear a different thing from someone else.

So I’m writing this, hoping you know who’s telling the truth and who’s isn’t. Hopefully I just have to repeat ENG4U1 because I don’t have room for
an university english course and I can just take it online 🙂

    Thank you,

    ?????????

    Hey there!

Okay so at any point, whenever someone needs to look up admission requirements, I always recommend hitting up the Admissions page where you get to specify your situation to figure out your needs.

Now for you, I wouldn’t say anyone was lying per se. Rather, they were probably confused. But from my own personal understanding, no, there won’t be any need to repeat a dreaded high school class. When it comes to transferring from another university, we always look at your grades at your current school and, more often than not, for a GPA in the B-range from said school — meaning not your high school.

But do answer the questions on the Admissions link I gave you to be absolutely clear.

    Best,

    aska

    from uae to utm

    Hi!

I am a freshman @ American Univ. in the UAE, I want to transfer to UTm in the fall. How many credits do I need to have by the end of next semester? I am currently taking 5 3-credit courses this semester and am thinking of dropping one. Also, all my courses are general education courses : english, intro to bio, arabic heritage, intro to psychology, and math 101, will this be an issue ? :S

Thank you so much for your help

    ?????????

    Hey there,

So according to UTM’s Admissions page, there isn’t necessarily a number of credits you need to take. However, there is a maximum number of courses that they’ll be willing to consider for transfer credits, that being 5.0 FCE, so you should be fine with the ones you have right now. Just make sure to keep up your good grades because that’s what the university will be judging you on.

    Cheers!

    but what if i withdraw?!

Hope you’re having a wonderful day. I have a question about transferring.

I know you get a lot of these questions, but I haven’t had luck with getting a hold of Enrollement, and I haven’t seen anyone ask this yet. Do you know how UofT feels about W’s on transcripts? I withdrew from 3 classes as of now (2nd year student) and I just realized that they appear on my transcript. They don’t affect my gpa and I should be able to pull a solid B+ by the end of the year, but I am still worried.

Should take a gamble on this, or just accept defeat?

Thanks in advance, you’re the best 🙂

    Sincerely, prospective student

    ?????????

    Hey Prospetive,

So like I told the last person confused about transferring, the number one place to go when it comes to admissions is, in fact, the admissions website! There you’ll get answers catered specifically to you. Basically, these would be your requirements assuming I filled out the questionnaire the way you would:

Admission consideration is based on your postsecondary studies and your most recent annual average, although we will review your entire academic record.

Program area prerequisites must be met at either the senior high school or university level. Applicants to limited enrolment programs must present the required first year university courses.

Competitive applicants to the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto St.George and University of Toronto Mississauga usually have a solid ‘B’ average.

This means that as long as you get that B+ you’re confident you’ll end up with, then you should be fine!:) Although allways keep in mind, however, that spots at UofT are more often than not competitive so make sure to maintain the good grades! I double checked with some people to be sure, but really, all that will be looked at are you grades, so your “W”s shouldn’t really hinder you.

    Hope you get in!

    a transfer to toronto please!

    Hi,

I am considering of transferring from UofOttawa to U of t (any campus really…) into the biochemistry program. Everytime I call the school asking what gpa’s are usually admitted they just tell me to refer to the website. I’m a part time student for health reasons and therefore don’t have the advantage of taking extra classes to boost my gpa. So what I’m asking really is even with a GPA a little less than a B will I be okay?

Your answer will be much appreciated 🙂

    ?????????

    Hey hey!

For anyone aiming to get into UofT, whether you’re a bright-eyed twelfth grader with this super high average that come university will totally plummet, or someone at another university that’s come to the realization that they just need to switch over to UofT, the best place to go is the Admissions website. Whoever you were talking to on the phone wasn?t kidding. You get to fill out this ultra specific questionnaire that gives you equally specifically answers!

So you for, after checking off “I’m a student in a Canadian University or College” and specifying that you go to another university, you just add that you aim to enter the “Life/Biological Sciences/Psychology” stream and voila!

According to these results, you’ll need what is literally referred to as a “solid ‘B‘ average,” so you should be fine! However, I stress aiming as high as possible in terms of your GPA in case the competition gets a little tough.

    Best of luck!

a course half completed or a course half done

Hello Aska!Heading into my second year in September at UTSG (life sci), but I’m already planning to transfer out to another institution in December (since my May plan has been rejected and foiled). However, what would happen in December if I am halfway through a year-long history course? Would I get credit if I transfer halfway out the course? If no credit will be given, is it advisable to transfer out at the end of second year to another university (back home? 🙁 )?Love, distressed UofT student.

    ———————————————
Hi Distressed U of T Student (… well one of them),

No … simply no. In order to receive a credit for a course you must complete it in its whole … completeness.

You actually made me ponder there for a second (which doesn’t really happen all that often with intention)?of things that you can complete partially and still receive the full outcome … it didn’t work? sooooo

Side Bar Ted – 5 things that you cannot complete partially and receive the full reward for
    1) Ordering Medium Regular at Tims (yes? … that is what I order, so feel free to bring a me a cup of joe) and giving them 80 cents when it’s worth $1.60 outside of Toronto… or $1.65 within the city (yes I think the price difference in bull)
    2) Running a marathon: you are first at the 21.1km mark and then just stopping … I assure you they will require you to finish in order to get your gold.

    3) Only completing half a roller coaster: you will not be paid for your work and in the likelihood that the incomplete nature of the coaster leads to a death, you will most likely end up with less money then when you started
    4) Only making one leg in a pair of pants: one leg will be naked … although you might make a new fashion trend

    5) Courses: If you sign up for a 1.0 and attend 50% of the course: you will not receive 0.5 FCE despite how awesome that would work out

The only way around transferring out after the fall session would be if you only took ‘H’ courses (i.e half a credit). Was your May plan rejected because you did not meet the grades required in order to transfer? If this is the case, and you did not take any courses in the summer, then your Fall credits will not have been completed at the time you are trying to apply for a transfer … and thus your grades will remain the same and will be inadequate if they were prior.

    Good luck matey.

forever in your heart … and mind,

    aska

    heyy, super helpful humanbeing!

I want to ask one question. Can I transition from one U of T campus to another during my first year?

Also, probably I wouldn’t have asked if I’d known where I can find info about transitioning on U of T website. Could you give me a link if there is one, please 🙂

    Thanks in advance!

    -confused humanbeing

    ———————————————

    Hi there confused!

What you’re asking about is called an internal transfer, and lots of students consider making such a campus-to-campus switch. The application to do as much is on the admissions website here, and you can apply as soon as today to start classes at a new campus next Fall. As to whether you can do that after just one semester, the answer is “no” for a couple of reasons. Enrolment services (the new, sexy title for “admissions”) will only accept transfer students after at least one year at any of the U of T campuses. Much like transferring universities, transferring campuses can only happen for September.

Since admissions officers have only recently looked at your admission application, they want you to show improvement over a full year before looking at it again and re-assessing your acceptance for the various campuses.

If you’re still bent on trying your luck, confused, your best bet is to contact admissions. I hope you’re charming!

P.S. I’d like to correct the assumption that I am a “super helpful humanbeing.” I am, in fact, a super helpful cyborg. But thanks for the compliment!

    transfer me baby

    Hello,

I am currently a student at seneca@york and am taking the *computer networking and technical support* program. The winter 2012 is going to be
my last semester. My question is that if I were to end off with a 2.5, which university can I transfer to, I do not need any transfer credits, and am willing to do the full 4 or 3 years if it means that I will get accepted.

    Thank you.

    ?????????????????????

    Hey there,

Well I know I’m all knowledegable … but?I don’t know (or want to know)?the transfer information?for every university in the whole wide world.?

I can, however, give you all the information you could ever want to know (and a little more) about the University of Toronto.

The entry requirements for a transfer student are dependent on the program they are trying to enter! If you follow this tool through, it will figure out your requirements for your specific situation.

knock knock. who’s there? come on U of T just let me in.

    Hi,

I’ve applied to UTSG next year as a transfer student to the Political Science faculty. ?I’ve been patiently waiting for a reply for months now, and I’m stressing sooo much about?whether or not I’ll get in. The U of T website says to be competitive, your GPA should be?a ‘solid B.’ With a 3.4 GPA from the University of Winnipeg, what would you say my?chances are?

    ??????????????????????-

    Hey heeey,

Well I would say pretty darn good, but I also have absolutely no say in if you get in. A 3.4 GPA gives you a ?solid B+, which is above the standard they suggested.

The only barrier I can think of is a high level of applicants for Poli Sci, might raise the standards.

I would just give admissions a shout and check on your status.

I was going to try and tie in this video … umm … it looks painful and you are experiencing waiting pains … there I did it.

Here is the transfer information for humanities into U of T. It says to have a “solid B” average.?So either?the inner?frat boy is coming out at admissions and awards or they mean to have?the higher end of a B in order to secure a place.

17% eh? maybe just celebrate Robby Burns day

    Hi,
I am looking to transfer to U of T for next fall. I saw the CUDO statistics for Fall 2009 and the acceptance rate was 17%. This kind of worries me. I know it couldn’t be much higher since they want to reserve as many seats as possible for the highschool students, but all the same I’m concerned.
What minimum GPA should one have to have a chance? I know that you don’t have access to those stats, but maybe you have an idea from transfer students you’ve known in the past?
    Cheers

    ??????????????????????-

    You little researcher you,

17% does seem pretty low, but I’m going to assume a few dummies didn’t check transfer requirements and applied with crazy low averages. U of T is fairly hard to get into in general (CUDO says about 26% for Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences), so it makes sense its equally hard to transfer in.

Click here, follow the steps and it will tell you what the specific requirements are for your program. It generally says a “solid B” average though.

I actually don’t know any students that have transfered into U of T … maybe that’s because only 17% get in. But if you do get in, imagine how special you will feel?

you’ll always be special in my heart,

asking questions isn’t basketball and doesn’t need to be played in quarters

    Hi there,

So, here goes my list of questions:

    1. Do all second year biology courses at UTSG require first year chemistry as a prerequisite? From the research I did, the courses don’t need chem but in order to get the program degree, you must have 1 FCE of chem. Well, there’s no point in taking the
courses and not be able to get the degree at the end of the day, is there?
    2. If I want to transfer to UTSC for my second year of study, will I get all 5 credits that I completed in first year at UTSG?
    3. Can I transfer from Social Sciences at UTSG to Mental Health Studies at UTSC or does it have to be the same area of study?
    4. When are you told if your transfer request got accepted? By what date?

Thank you for your time! 🙂

    ???????????????

    Hey there back,

    1)no

    2)yes

    3)no

    4)yes

…. just kidding, don’t get all sassy with me.

    1) No not all second year Bio classes require Chem classes, but it doesn’t look like you can get through Biology without having to take a Chem course at some point. Depending on which Bio program you are looking at taking, you may flatly be required to take a CHM course as a requirement or some of the required Bio classes have Chem as a prereq. Sorry, no avoiding those test tubes.

    2) You should be, but there is no gaurentee. Here is what the admissions and awards webiste says:

    • Transfer credits are assessed after admission has been decided. Credits are considered for degree courses taken at recognized degree-granting institutions.? More information will be provided at the time of admission.
    • Successful applicants are admitted to a program area.? Admission to a specific program is determined by the Faculty/Department once transfer credits have been assessed, and will depend on whether or not program prerequisites and grade requirements have been met.

    3) You can transfer to any program that you like, but make sure you have the requirements to get into the program.

    4) When they get around to it ok!! GEEEZ. They don’t give a specific date, but the deadline to apply for all the programs are in the spring, so I would think it would be fair to assume that by the end of the spring semester you will know.

    Good luck ol’ chap

    To Infinity And St George

    Hi,
I was wondering if transfer within UofT (not hard to guess from where to UTSG) also possible during the winter session. I know the dates are already over for this year, but supposing a student wanted to transfer downtown, but missed it during Fall 2012, would he be able to do it in the next semester? Would the rules be any different for a student in second year? For a student who, like many, is considering transferring to the “other” campus location, what would be a possible source of difficulty in enrollment and beyond?
    Thank you much.

They only do the whole transfer process one time a year. Changing campus’ is fairly common occurence, so the process is actually quite simple.
