    extra work for economics

    Hey!

This is the first time I’m writing to you and I guess I have a little problem. I’ve just finished my first year at UofT St. George and although I struggled a bit, I know where I went wrong and I’ve kinda figured out what i have to fix to do better academically. However, I did not get into the Subejct Post that I wanted: Economics. I want to Major in Economics but i didn’t get the required math grade as I took MAT136H1 and barely passed. I’m thinking of repeating the course again this fall, but my question to you is do you think its possible for me to take MAT133Y1 instead? I know that MAT133 is an excluded course if a student has received credit for MAT136, but I think i’d have a better chance of making the grade if I took MAT133 instead. I know a lot of people would say that maybe Econ just isn’t for me because I’m not good at math, but i think last year was more down to me being lazy and not having the foundation that I would have liked. So yeah, basically what I’m asking is: is it possible for me to do MAT133 instead of repeating MAT136 having passed MAT136?

    Regards,
    Regretfully-motivated.

    ———————————————

    Regretfully motivated,

It is possible for you to do MAT133Y, but the credit WILL be counted as extra, meaning it won’t contribute to your cGPA, and on your transcript it’ll just say “EXT” (for extra) next to it.

However, the grade you get will still be considered for a program requirement.

And, lucky for you, you won’t have to go through the trouble of bugging your college to enrol in the course for you since technically you’ve never taken MAT133Y before.

Just note that with MAT133Y, you need to get at least 63%.

    Cheers!

    making plans on probation

    Hi aska,

I’ve just finished my first year of university (technically I haven’t as I will explain) and things are looking pretty grim for me. And before I go on and tell you how stressed I am at my current situation, I will make no excuses and the stress that I am experiencing is all of my own doing, due to stupidity, naivety, and laziness.

I earned 2.5 credits and failed two full-year and one half-year course. Those 2.5 credits are made up of Soc100y1, Pol101y1, Psy100h1. I got 63 for Soc, 52 for Pol, and 58 for Psychology. My goal is to get into the Sociology subject post and the minimum requirement for that is a 65 in soc100y1. I’ve read on here that the college registrar allows you to retake a course for the purpose of raising a mark to be able to meet a subject post requirement. Am I right on that? If so, is it a matter of setting up an appointment close to the start of the fall semester and talking to them about it?

Also wondering in regards to taking 200 level courses. Would I be able to take a 200 level Political science course with the 52 mark I got in political science? On the matter of courses, I understand that on academic probation, you are only allowed to enrol in 5 courses. So am I on the right track thinking I can take Soc100y1 again, along with a 200 level pol course, and 3 100 level courses?

Is my situation something I can recover from?

In regards to the registrar and making an appointment, I would love any kind of reassurance that the people I would be speaking to are not judgmental and are friendly. I have a lot of anxiety and any words from you in regards to that would help calm my nerves.

Thanks so much, you don’t know how much I appreciate your time and feedback!

    ———————————————

    Hey hey

So let’s begin by saying that fine, you’re on probation.

    Does that suck? Yes.

Can it be worse? Durr, you could be suspended.

Can you recover? Well of course!

Naturally, this just means you’ll have to work for it, but you most certainly can recover. 😉

Now students are allowed to retake courses they’ve already passed if it’s for the purpose of meeting a program requirement.

Just note that even if you get an 80 in SOC101Y the second time around, that credit will just count as extra on your transcript and the grade won’t contribute to your CGPA.

But the process of getting into the course another time is simple. Yup, you just go to your college registrar. There, you’ll fill out an add/drop course form and then someone will manually enter you into the course. HOWEVER, there isn’t exactly a set date for when they’ll do this. Typically it happens a day or two after the day you yourself could have added courses, but they’re going to have to wait for an okay from the faculty.

As for poli sci, your grade doesn’t really matter. Basically, just look at the prerequisites. Most 200-level poli sci courses just require 4.0 FCE and having taken a POL course beforehand. So can you take them? Sure you can!

And this reply is basically me saying “yes” over and over again in different ways, but yeah, you can only take a total of 5.0 FCE since you’re on probation — but that’s no biggie, really, since that’s usually what people take to begin with.

Lastly, feel free to make an appointment with your registrar! They’re there to help you.

Like fun fact: it’s their job.

    Cheers!

if you’re not in the 80s, you’re not getting in to uoft

    Hi

Im currently a grade 11 student and I am taking grade 12 advanced function this semester, but I’m not doing as well as I want too. I want to do Biochemistry or pharmaceutical chemistry at U of T. I am only getting a 82 in Advanced Functions right now and I will be taking calculus next year. I am hoping to do well in calculus but do you recommend I redo grade 12 advanced functions?

    ———————————————

    Hey hey

If you’re not doing well, then I definitely recommend retaking the course. Your top six marks in grade twelve are pretty significant — especially the ones relevant to where you’re applying.

But honestly, 82 isn’t thaaaat bad. I know we say to aim for mid- to high-80s but if you just bump that up a little you should be fine.

And luckily for you, life sci isn’t toooooooo strict and will still look at your second mark in the class. Some departments aren’t as forgiving — lookin at you Rotman! — and only take the first time around, so yay you. 🙂

    Cheers!

i love MAT134 so … so much that i just want to take it on repeat

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I have a question about the course enrollment.

I took MAT134 in UTM, and unfortunately I only get a 53%. However, I have to get a minimum of 60% in order to take Mathematics as my major.
So, I want to retake this course in the following year.
But the ROSI system said that I can’t retake this course because I have already taken in my previous session.
    What should I do now?
How can I retake this course?

    Thank you for helping me.

    ———————————————

    Hey hey!!

UTM allows you to repeat a first-year course in order to obtain a specific grade for program entry!

Here is what they be sayin’ on the matter:

Students may not repeat any course that they have passed. The only exception occurs when students require a 100-level course with a specific grade higher than D for entry into a limited enrolment program. Students may repeat such a course once as an extra course which will have no effect on the student’s status or GPA.

ROSI will stop you from enrolling in the course, but the registrar’s department and/or the math department should be able to override ROSI and put you in the course.

    love and cupcakes,

    repeat a course, a course, a course

is it ok to retake a course in high school? i am planning to apply forensic psychology at UTM and they need one math and bio in high school. my friend said it’s ok as long as you write a letter tyo explain why did you retake the course. im so confused!

    ———————————————

    Hey!

Here is the official University of Toronto response:

    ” Repeated Courses
While the University of Toronto recognizes that there may be valid reasons for a student to repeat a course, in general we urge students do as well as possible on their first attempt. In considering students for admission and scholarships, the University reserves the right to give preference to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course. ”

Now here’s my unofficial U of T response. What I’ve heard is the case is if it’s a close call between you and other students (I.e you are right at the cutoff), they will consider your repeated coure. In that situation, they will choose the student who got the awesome marks first time around.

Also, this reponse varies per department. I’ve head that the engineers are a little more snotty with repeated courses.

My advice is do well the first time and be the one to bump the other fools out of the running … buuuuuut I’m also assuming you’re asking this question because you already didn’t do well in a course. I that case, theres not much you can do but to retake the course or build a time machine.

    forever and truly,

    aska

    fail once, fail better

    Hi,

I’m a first year life science student. I went on ROSI this weekend to see my marks and found out that I only got a 52 in organic chemistry! I’ve already applied to all the type 3 subject post but they all require me to have all course a minimum of 60 and at least a gpa of 3.0!
This is the only course that I got that low, and because of this bad mark, not only does it not meet the requirement of having all courses above 60, my gpa is not above 3.0 anymore either!
Is there something I can do to get into any of the programs or am I just done and have to transfer from life science to some other program like commerce.

    -Christine

    ———————————————

    Hi Christine,

Please don’t despair. Since you are in first year, please keep in mind that you can continue to apply for the subject PoST of your choosing all the way until your final year of study. The main thing is being able to apply for some classes you need to take next year, right?

For the time being, you can enter a Type 1 Subject PoSt at any time in order to be able to select specific classes in upper years (remember that you have to be registered in a Specialist, Double Major or a Major and Two Minors). Your marks and criteria might also meet some Type 2 and 3 PoSts. You can also retake Organic Chemistry to boost your mark next year.

Perhaps a sitdown with an academic counsellor might make you feel more at ease about course selection for next year? Sinceyou have at least passed all your classes (silver lining!), you can register as a second year student to have an easier chance at nabbing some prime classes, working towards your Life Sciences Subject PoSt requirements. For now, peruse the program requirements, take the classes you can without being registered in the Subject PoSt (after a select date, the priority restrictions fall away and anyone can register!), and work towards your degree. Work hard, and when you reapply next year, it’ll be all good.

    xoxo, Askastudent

repeat, repeat, repeat a course gently down St.George

    Hello ASKA,
    Wish you happy new year….?
Well, i just found i failed a eco couse last semester, and i want to know what is the u of t policy if i’d like to take the course again? i mean how about the GPA be calculated? will my new grade replace the worse one for the same course?

    Best regards,
    Frances

    ———————————————

Frances? (… Bean Cobain? Yah that’s somehow the spawn of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain)

I must regretfully inform you that you cannot banish your failed mark from your CGPA. If you repeat a course, both grades will be calculated into your CGPA.

    Sorry dude.

    Stay Golden,

If I could turn back time … and get all A’s the first time

    PART ONE

    Hey ASKA!!!!

I was just wondering if their is any chance of making up for bad marks in a few courses…? What are the u of t policies regarding doing a 2 times? Which marks would be included in the gpa?

    Thanks

    JJ

    PART TWO

    Hey aska,

Okay, I am most definitely going to pass my physiology course but not with a very good?
mark. So, I was wondering if I can repeat the course and if yes, which marks will be?
    counted?

    Thanks
    JJ

    ???????????????
JJ baby, sorry for the tardy response. Especially if you’re are the JJ from criminal minds because you have lots of better things to do (ie being a babe and solving crimes with Matty Gray Gubler)

U of T recently launched the ‘extra’ credit which sounds cool, but really it’s like a get out of jail free card with a catch.

This is what the course calendar says:

Repeating a Course as an “Extra”

All students (both degree and non-degree-seeking) may repeat up to 1.0 full-course equivalent for which they have received credit (i.e., achieved a grade of 50% or higher or CR) for reasons other than to gain a required mark above passing to qualify for entry into a Subject POSt or a course required for a prerequisite. The repeated course will be designated an “Extra” course: it will appear on the academic record, but will be marked “Extra” and will not be included in GPA calculations or in the degree credit count.

Students may not use this one-time-only Extra provision to repeat a passed course yet again which they have already repeated once as an Extra to qualify for entry into a Subject POSt or for entry into a course for which the repeated course is be a prerequisite i.e., a student may repeat a specific passed course only once.

Students requesting to repeat a course in this way must do so at their college registrar?s office, where they will receive appropriate advising and will be enrolled, provided there is space available, only after other degree students have had an opportunity to enroll”

So pretty much … sure they will allow it but it won’t do you any good unless you are looking to repeat the course to obtain a grade for a prereq. No it won’t erase you’re not-so-hot grade and no it won’t even contribute to your CGPA

    Love Always,

Hi, i?m in grade 9, and want to do something in medicine. I want to become a doctor or such. I just want to know what are the cutoff marks (or what should my average be aroud) and how much do they look at grade 9 and 10 marks, if at all? Just a few questions, my avg. in gr. 9 is 97. What should be around in the senior grades. Also, how big a role does community service play. Is it as much of a deal as it is served up to be? Could u e-mail me the answers pls.? Also, if there is additional information you could give me I?d be very grateful. I was also thinking about a uniiversity such as U of T, McMaster, Western, etc.
    Thanks.?

the sixtuple decker bacon cheeseburger of freaked out highschool kids

Okay now I know this may sound lame or cheesy but I’ve wanted to go to U of T St
George Campu since I was oh I dunno 11? I know its sounds weird but i remember
it was one summer day in my cousins backyard that I decided which high school
and university I wanted to go to without even knowing what I wanted to be in
life. I am a good student and make honour roll every year but I’ve heard you
need to be in high 80’s or low 90’s to get in at st george, and I saw in the
addmissions book that they particularily look at your calculus and English
marks. My marks are still fairly good but they did drop quite a bit from garde
10 to grade 11. Im entering grade 12 in september and I’ve fast tracked and
    taken 3 grade 12 courses in which I’ve gotten high-mid 80’s. I got an 85% in
grade 12 english which im hoping is good enough… along with that by fast
tracking I currently have 30 credits and have techically fufilled all high
school diploma requirments through day, summer, and night school. Along with
that I have 150 community hours. The only problem is im not very good at math,
and I’ve heard Calculus is extremely difficult. Furthermore my school is known
for its infamous math department. What is the minimum mark I need in Calculus
to get accepted? Will St george look down at me taking claulus in privatre
school? In the admissions book it only says that they don’t like students
repeating courses, it doesnt mention summer/might/private school. If you
actually attend St. George and are in the life science program would you mind
telling me what your marks were like in grade 12? Thank you so much =D … by
the way Im loving this site, although it was difficult to find
PS Please do not tell me to refer to admissions as I find tehre website
    extremly useless.
