    UTM = Sheridan’s Probation

    Hi there,
I attended Sheridan College last year and had a terrible semester GPA wise because I did not enjoy what I was studying. I am interested in taking English at UTM in the fall but have a negative transcript to my name. I am 23 years old and can be considered a mature student, but am worried that my previous academic record will hinder my chances of getting in. Is there a chance that I can be accepted on probation at UTM?
    Thank you!
    Lu

    ———————————————

    Hi Lu,

Unfortunately I don’t think that you can … well right away. The information that they give for a mature is the following:

The University of Toronto considers applicants based on their academic background, regardless of age. To see if you meet our admission requirements, please go back and select the appropriate level of education and your program of interest.

    Annnnd those admission requirements are:

Admission consideration is based on your overall academic record and your most recent annual average. Competitive students normally have a high ‘B’ average in their college studies, with sufficient academic content, although some programs require higher standing.

    Meeeeaning:

If you do not meet the published admission requirements you may qualify for various humanities and social science programs through either the Academic Bridging Program or the Transitional Year Program. Please note that if you have already attempted degree studies, you are not eligible for these programs.

    Academic Bridging Program

The Academic Bridging Program is intended for Canadian citizens/permanent residents/protected persons (convention refugees) who do not hold the published admission requirements to qualify for degree studies.

Detailed information, including applications and deadlines for the Academic Bridging Program is available through the Academic Bridging Program office, Woodsworth College Academic Bridging.

    Transitional Year Programme (TYP)

TYP is designed for those who could not finish high school because of financial problems, family difficulties or other circumstances beyond their control. It is a one-year, full-time program leading to admission into an Arts and Science degree program. Detailed information is available through Transitional Year Programme.

Hopefully that response didn’t make you feel like you were in a lecture. Pure info, no fun.

    Truly yours,
    aska

    Fresh Prince of York? Utm?

Hey aska, this site is amazing and so helpful. I have a question about the Psychology programs at UTm and at UTSG. WHich one is more math based? or harder lets say? I am doing a victory lap and my marks and pretty good except for math. I want a BSC not a BA. ALot of people are telling me to go to York because it is much easier to get into and it specializes for their psychology program.
What is your opinion? i live much closer to Utm and it will be cheaper for me than taking the go bus every day.
    thanks a bunch!

    ———————————————

    Yo yo

I think if you had a gun to my head … i know … intense … I would tell you to go to UTM. Its not often I give blunt answers, but you just seem to bring that out in me. Here’s my reasoning and you are free to ignore it… but it’s good, so don’t.
Below I have included the course requirements for both UTSG and UTM. The only math-ish courses that you will have to take are Stats and Eco. Saying that, those are the requirements for both schools.
Now, if you want to chince out a little (and we all do it), I would chincing by going to UTM and not St.George instead of hauling your ass all the way to York.
First of all U of T is consistantly ranked in the top 20 schools in the world. When you graduate from U of T they don’t emphasize what campus you did so on.
So to enter the major, you must have a 75% in the the Psy100 at the St. George campus and a 63% at the Missisauga one.
Also I’m a little comfused what you are saying about York. U of T does offer a Psych Specialist in Science. Im going to assume its harder to get into than Yorks but probably waaaay better.
Although word on the street is that York students are better looking.

    UTM Requirements:

    First Year PSY100Y5
    Higher Years
    1. PSY201H5/ BIO360H5/ ECO220Y5/227Y5/ SOC350H5/ STA218H5/220H5

    UTSG:

    After PSY100:

    1. Statistics: PSY201H1/ECO220Y1/ECO227Y1/GGR270H1/HMB325H1/SOC202H1/STA220H1/STA250H1
    2. Two of PSY210H1, PSY220H1, PSY230H1, PSY240H1 (Cluster A) and two of PSY260H1, PSY270H1, PSY280H1, PSY290H1(Cluster B)

    5. 1.5 FCEs from Groups 1 and/or 2 below

    Happy decisions making 🙂

don’t knock UTM ’till you try UTM

    Dear Aska,
This site has been EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks so much !

I’ve recently been admitted to UTM as an international student and have accepted my offer since then. I’ve also been doing some research and asking around, and many (if not most) of the responses I have gotten are starting to make me worry. They all seem to point out that UTM is inferior to the main campus which I did not apply to, and that residence life at UTM is extremely boring and dead and that UTM is mostly international students. As well as that it is a commuter university, and that Mississauga is lifeless and there is nothing to do there. I can not visit the campus anytime before the academic year starts since I live halfway across the world, so I can’t really see for myself how the campus is and if I even like it. I really don’t want to be spending the next four years of my life in a place I can’t stand. From what I have seen in the university website, it seems really awesome which is why I chose it in the first place! As well as it’s academic excellence. I really like it, but i haven’t been there to judge. I have looked through every possible website for answers. But I just can’t seem to get any help. :S
    Any advice?

    Sincerely,
    Confused prospective.

    ———————————————

    Dear Confused,

Don’t listen to those haters. Anyone cool understands that university is what you make of it. UTM might be small, but it is very pretty (lots of nature wildlife), has an insanely vibrant student council and probably will be great once you get situated. Look at these promotional videos! Look at this cool list of clubs you could join!

Okay, that might not impress you much, which is why I’m going to suggest that you get in contact with the University of Missisauga Students’ Union, via Facebook.

They might be able to sell you on UTM, which it seems like you already loved before other people tried to convince you otherwise. You know that old saying, don’t knock it ’till you try it? Well you need to try UTM before you pull out. Doing internal switches at U of T is much harder than you might realize, but don’t think of it as a bad experience you are heading into – think of it as a possibly wonderful adjustment period.

    Let me know what happens.

    xoxo, Askastudent

they have life sci at utm, who knew

    Hi Aska,
I would just like to ask you if you know which mark update is more important? The marks that are uploaded now, which for semestered school are the first semester credits or the mark update which is later in march this year? My marks are not so good and im only a percents away from an 86 average. I have applied to Life Sciences and I also wanted to ask what are my chances of getting into utm with about an 81 avg?
    thanks

    ???????????????

    yo yo yoooooo

Here are the specific date information taken fromt he Future Students section on the Innis website:

Your high school will send to OUAC any final first-semester grades and current full-year midterm grades by 15 February 2011.

Toward the end of April, your high school will provide to OUAC your midterm grades for second-semester courses and interim grades for full-year courses.

Meaning that both grades are considered. If your current grades aren’t high enough for the program you might not be admitted on early admission but if you get your shit together this semester you might get admitted in the regular admissions time.

I’m not entirely sure what the admissions average for Life Sci at Utm are. Its something that changes each year based on the number of applicants and their grades. At the St.George campus they generally say to have a mid to high 80’s average, but as it’s UTM and not quite so snobby so?the average might be a little lower.

Hopefully that helped and didn’t shatter all your dreams,

    love always,
    aska

    The long lost information

how many students graduate from utm with a 3.8 GPA or higher? I’ve tried googling to no end, is there such a statistic for this?

    ———————————————

U of T is kind of like a couple in their 20th year of marriage, they’re always trying to keep the mystery alive. Meaning, they specifically do not allow information like that to be published.

why, oh why do they torture us so

and another one bites the St.George dust

I saw your site. I have a question!! So, I am a first year UTM student and I understand that I cannot take St. George courses until i finish 4.0 credits from UTM. However, can I choose a subject POST from St. George? I really want to do the physics major in St. George but I also dont think I could switch campuses because of my GPA. (chemistry is a %*#$) If I do end up picking the physics major from UTM, can I take the required courses for the major in the St. George campus even if it is offered in UTM?

    ———————————————

    Whaddup little UTMer

Unfortunately you would have to registered at the St.George campus to have a subject POST from that campus.

I would suggest first going into your registrar’s office and asking them about the possibility of transferring to the downtown campus. It sounds like that’s the campus that would be best suited for you. You never know, you might secretly have the perfect CGPA to get transferred (well i don’t know really, but you might as well check).

This is what the Arts and Science Course Calendar says about taking courses at other campuses:
” Students registered on the St. George campus of the Faculty of Arts & Science may enroll in most courses offered by University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Scarborough, provided that they meet the enrollment controls and prerequisites established by those divisions. These courses count towards the 20 credits required for a St. George degree and are included in the CGPA. These courses may also count towards St. George program requirements; students should check with their program office before enrolling. ”

Meaning, that unfortunately your going to have to go into the Physics department and talk to all those scary men dropping eggs off of balconies in little contraptions trying to get them not to break AND just ask them if its cool with them if you betray UTM for St.George …. and still have it contribute to your degree.

    With Greatest Love,
    Aska

    be a dentist, you’ll be a success

    Hi,
I am currently a student at UTM, and am enrolled in Physical and Chemical Sciences. My ultimate goal is to become a dentist, which requires a minimum of two years in Life Science. I was wondering what I would need to do in order to switch into Life Sciences? like what GPA would I need to maintain etc.
    Thanks a lot!
    Lauren

    ———————————————

    Hi Lauren,

Askastudent applauds your exciting life choice to become a dentist. Congratulations. May you floss eternally.

It’s totally possible that you can switch into UTM’s Life Science program. According to their website, first year students take the following courses, which will lead them down to the road to being able to apply to professional schools, like dentistry.

    • BIO152H5: Introduction to Evolution and Evolutionary Genetics
    • BIO153H5: Diversity of Organisms
    • CHM140Y5: The Study of Matter and Its Transformations
    • MAT134Y5: Calculus for Life Sciences

You might have taken a few of these courses already in your Chemistry program. Another important thing to note is their high school preparations. Do you have any equivalent of the following classes?

    • English (ENG4U)*;
    • Advanced Functions (MHF4U)*;
    • Biology (SBI4U)*; and
    • Chemistry (SCH4U).*
    • While Physics (SPH4U)* is recommended for some programs, it is required for Biotechnology.

It’s possible that you might have to take some first year pre-reqs to switch into Life Sciences in your future year. However, remember that you can only take a maximum of six 100 level credits that go towards your degree.

I would recommend talking to the Life Science program directly about your intention to switch into the program and how that will lead to dentistry. They can be contacted here.

    Best of luck!

    mississauga goddammit

I need to know how to transfer to St George campus! I just don’t get it! This is my second year. However, I only took 1.5 credits last year and I got 2 credits transferred. This year I am taking 6.0 to catch up, and I NEED TO GO TO DOWNTOWN CAMPUS NEXT FALL!!! It takes me 1 hour 30 mins to get to UTM everyday!!!

    ———————————————

Unfortunately for anyone wanting to come to St. George, the transfer credit process is a bit loopy. You cannot simply switch from UTM to St. George like a model off duty. The process, called an internal transfer can be completed through Admissions and Awards by filling out  this application. It costs $85.

St. George of course, is notoriously more difficult to transfer into than UTM. I would recommend talking to Admissions and Awards about the application and how many of your transfer credits will go through. Sorry about the commute – you do know about the shuttle buses, right?

  • anti-calendar,  polisci,  sociology,  UTM

why is there no UTM anti-calendar?

im wondering if you might have knowledge/some book guide that would talk of the ‘preferred’ courses that are taken in second year for political sci and sociology at UTM?
    any info would be helpful
guide as in ‘best prof to take or course’

    thank you in advance

    ———————————————

Apologies beforehand, as I am using your question as a jumping off point to discuss why UTM doesn’t have an anti-calendar. Normally I would be able to point you to the resource, which does offer criticism on instructors, easiness and cvetching with the course. However, UTM’s regular anti-calendar hasn’t been updated since 2005, and the only courses it does discuss are for programs in anthropology, biology, culture communication and technology and chemical and physical sciences. WTF?

Your best bet might be to go on the dreaded Rate My Professor, and see if any of the courses you want to take also match a well-loved prof. (Bonus points if there’s a chili pepper next to their name.) Otherwise, maybe contacting the Political Science or Sociology programs is the best thing to do? Both have academic counsellors there.

But hey Aska Readers, have you taken these classes? Any poli sci/sociology majors at UTM reading? Help a Aska out and comment with advice.

even if i’ve fallen short…will U of T let me in?

    Hello,
I have arranged to transfer to UTSG from UTM, and I have a couple of questions. First, I have a 2.49 CGPA and the minimum is 2.5 – will they not accept me because I am short .01? Also, if I do not get accepted into UTSG will I still be enrolled at UTM?
    Thank you!

    ???????????????

This kind of seems like an obvious question to me. Maybe now, to you. If you are short the minimum grade to be accepted into the school, St George will not let you in. If you are denied a transfer, you will remain at UTM, where it seems you should. I would be booking an appointment with the UTM college registrar, if I was you.

Have more questions? Contact the transfer credit office.

  • summer,  UTM,  UTSC

    we can get physical later

Long time reader, first time askaing. I am a St. George Campus student (geography major) and wanted to know if I can take summer classes at Mississauga or Scarborough. They offer different classes from St. George, and a change of scenery would be nice. Is there a place on the St. George campus where a physical copy of the summer programs offered at the other campuses can be picked up.

    Thank you

    —————————————-

You sure can. However, you definitely want to do your research first. Talk it out with both your college registrar AND your departmental advisor (so geography in this case). You will want to make sure that the credits you take will actually count towards your program. Be wary of prerequisites and exclusions. The UTSC and UTM course lists will not specify what St. George courses count as prerequisites and exclusions. It is up to YOU to find out whether or not the courses you have will let you take the course you want to take at UTSC/UTM.

Like I said, talk it out with your college registrar. Nothing?s worse than wasting a $500 bucks, and a summer on top of that.

The St. George summer course list is not actually finalized yet, but when it DOES come out, you can pick up a copy at your local convenience sto?uh, college registrar. If you?re impatient like me, you can always just print out a copy of the online preliminary list.

Kudos to you for being a faithful fan.

    everything’s waiting for you!

im battling with the idea of transfering downtown or staying at utm and taking courses downtown.
i know that utm students cant register for utsg courses until august. Im worried ill get stuck on a waitlist and wont get into the courses i want.
I live in Mississauga and i like the idea of being able to take the shuttle bus back and forth.
    but is it worth it?
should i just transfer to utsg?
i figured that by taking some courses downtown next year i could see if its worth transfering. but i heard its harder to transfer after 2nd year (im first year now)
the deadline for transfers is this sunday, so i need to make a decision quickly.
i originally wanted to go downtown, but my parents talked me out of it. now i really regret it.
    any advise would help!
