i also want to know when the timetable will be out :(

do you know when the timetable will be updated?

    ——————————————

    hey there,

unfortunately i do not! i wish i had access to that kind of information, lol. i’m not high up enough in the bureaucracy for that.

if you want to be alerted when it is updated, i’d recommend following the arts and science student union on twitter. they tend to be pretty on top of these things, and i get a lot of my faculty-related news from them before i hear it from anyplace else.

otherwise, i anticipate the update will be released soon! course enrollment is coming up next month, and they’ve already released the preliminary timetable with info about course offerings/delivery/synchronicity. if you haven’t checked the preliminary timetable yet, it may at least be able to give you a sense of which courses will be offered!

    keener alert

hi! do you know when the timetable for courses is going to update? i’ve been wanting to plan out my classes for next year but i know the timetable isn’t going to be 100% accurate until it updates.

    ——————————————

    hey there,

to my understanding, there’s not really one comprehensive update for the timetable. u of t has too many departments and divisions that like to change things around at the last minute. they’ve probably already begun revamping the timetable for next year, but until it reads ‘2020-2021 fall & winter session timetable” instead of 2019-2020, i’d assume it’s fully unusable. especially with covid, we don’t necessarily know if classes are going to look the same next year. even in regular years, class times and offerings tend to change year to year.

my guess is that by june-ish (late june??) that heading will update. perhaps it will update later this year if covid changes the way u of t will operate. regardless, it’s important to note that the heading update only indicates that the timetable is mostly accurate, not 100% solid. like i said, there might still be smaller updates after that. i wanna say that around…. mid july (?) is typically the best time to do course planning, because it’s when the timetable starts to settle down.

right before my first year, i think i got on top of course planning several weeks before enrollment began. i also remember having to revise my course schedule several times, because a couple of things shifted and messed with the whole thing i had going on.

i understand the desire to plan your courses out (it’s exciting!!) but i would advise against doing it too early, unless you’re willing to spend extra time revising your timetable should your course info change.

i’d say the safest time to plan out your courses is just several days before your enrollment date, even though that might seem a bit tight. and then check over your course details one more time the morning of your enrollment day, to be super super sure nothing has changed.

    gotta hang on!

which is more accurate, the timetable or the academic calendar? when will the timetable be totally done?

    ——————————————

    hello hello,

the timetable is never ‘totally done,’ per se– i feel like small changes are always being made as more sections are added, rooms are assigned, instructors are moved around, etc. i would recommend you wait to plan your courses closer to course reg time if you’re worried about it, as it tends to stabilize around then.

i’ve heard that there are actually some issues with the current timetable, in that there are discrepancies between the courses registrars know are to be offered and what the timetable shows. this was flagged with first year seminars in particular, as i’ve written in several previous posts, but there could very well be other issues i’m not aware of at the moment. i will post an update about this when i get one, but once again– gotta hang on!

from what i know, the calendar is probably your more reliable bet at the moment. i’ve confirmed that it is up to date. while changes are definitely still possible, they’ll be tracked on this webpage.

however, the calendar won’t give you the kind of info essential to planning out your schedule, not the same way the timetable will. you’ll notice that courses listed on it are devoid of any practical details– no room numbers, no instructors, no tutorial times. this is why you’ll want to hang on for a bit and use the timetable to plan closer to course selection– but if you want to check which courses are being offered and stuff, the calendar is a solid bet.

hope this helped! best of luck with planning things out and getting those prereqs down.

    i can only speculate

if i can’t find a course on the timetable, does that mean it isn’t being offered? i’m really interested in ANT195H1 (Speculative Fiction and Social Reality) but when i try to add it to the timetable, it won’t show up!

    ——————————————

    hey there,

ANT195 does sound pretty cool! unfortunately, it’s hard for me to say at this point because the timetable is still constantly being updated. i’m not sure if these are big updates or small ones. i tried looking it up too, both using the course code and by scrolling through the anthropology listings, and can’t find any mention of ANT195.

i guess if you really wanted to check on it, you could very politely email the department? thing is, if it hasn’t been finalized yet, the department may not even have an answer for you.

might wanna start looking into backups, just in case. ENG102 might be a good option if it’s the speculative fiction you’re into– my guess is it would be a larger course than the anthro one, though. lemme know if you need any other recommendations and i can try to dig those up for you! i would recommend you plan for something else for now, and keep checking up on the course as the weeks go by. maybe, with a little luck, it’ll come up. it’s still in the calendar, anyway, which is more than i can say for some of the courses i planned to take.

a side note — since the timetable is always being updated, it’s best to double check all your courses before your start time at the end of july!

EDIT 06/08/19: i’ve received word that the timetable actually has a few issues that need ironing out. eg. old courses appearing, current ones missing etc. there’s a possibility that ANT195 may fall into the latter category. i will add to this post if i find anything out, but i would sit tight for now.

    patience, my child

when will course listings on griddy/acorn/course search be up to date? every listing i’ve found gives different courses that are or aren’t there!

    ——————————————

    hi!

as far as i’m aware, there’s no exact date out as to when the listings will be updated– i’ve noticed the same thing, that course finder is only showing summer session stuff right now. generally the update happens sometime in june, both on ACORN and the artsci timetable. the university’s still in the process of working out what the listings are gonna look like, which is why you’ve probably had trouble finding accurate info so far.

at least the timetables are up to date, according to my friend at the office of student life, so if you do wanna be a keener and start working on your schedule you can start there. in fact, i’d actually recommend you use the official artsci timetable as opposed to griddy. that is, if you’re in artsci.

griddy isn’t run by the university, which means that while it can totally be helpful, it isn’t necessarily foolproof. a previous aska did a quick rundown on their experience with this, which you can check out here. i’d recommend giving it a read. even then, i prefer the timetable for a few reasons. the timetable will use different colours for lectures, tutorials, labs, etc., which can help break up your schedule and make it easier to read. i’m not sure if there’s a way to do this in griddy, but i wasn’t able to find one. the timetable can be helpful for slotting tutorials in, too, because it’ll show you all the potential times in one page rather than you having to click on each section to see it.

the timetable also offers you a more complete set of information! with course listings, it will show you space availability, enrolment restrictions, and location/waitlist info. you’ll also be able to click on a tab that shows you prereqs, breadth reqs, exclusions, and the course description. maybe i’m just looking in the wrong place, but I’ve never been able to find anything other than section, time, and instructor on griddy.

in short, this has been a large plug for the timetable! use it use it use it. apart from the ical feature griddy has, i can’t really think of a reason why the timetable might not be a preferable option. it’s safer and more informative. what’s not to love?
anyway, yknow what would be killer, especially for first years? a site you could plug your course codes into and have your classes mapped out across campus. could be game-changing. i 10/10 could have avoided trekking the MILES from con hall to bader with queen’s park closed and a full-on blizzard in my face. i guess i know better now. class location is important, people, don’t gloss over it. i make mistakes so you don’t have to.

    the amazing race: classroom edition

I keep going to my timetable to figure out where my classes are going to be and it won’t tell me even when i ask for a map is this normal? i just want to know how far my classes are from one another? Do they usually not tell you until the night before?

    ———————————————

    Hey classroom stalker,

Unfortunately they can release the classroom information per course. I have had some locations come up on the timetable the moment that I register in the course and others be released the day before the first class!

It is strange that the map isn’t working for you (mainly because that is the only device on ROSI that I have a bit of a crush on), but if you look on your timetable with all those coloured boxes, under the course code it will offer letters and numbers. The letters are the location of the building and the numbers are the actual classroom. You can use this handy map, here.

If they don’t post the classroom before the first class … you don’t have to go.

Ok … I can never lie to you baby … you still have to go to class. Some departments post their classrooms on their home website and if not, I would call and pester them until they tell.

    Good luck on your hunt!

the heartbreak timetable …er … hotel

    Hi!

I was trying to figure out my timetable. And this might be a silly question, but if the time is MR4-6, T4, does that mean I have the option of a class on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, or I need to go to all three?

    ———————————————

    Heyo!!

Oh boy am I about to break your heart:

“An oblique stroke (/) means ‘or’. A comma and a semi-colon both mean ‘and’.”

Meaning you have to attend all three. My guess is MR 4-6 is the lecture and the T4 is the tutorial or lab (depending on the course)

If it makes you feel better I misread the timetable and it turned out I had double the lecture time then I thought.

back-to-back lectures made possible with Tim Hortons

    Hello,

I’m going into CS at UTSG, but I’m also taking RSM and ECO (trying to get in to Rotman year 2). I’m really interested in doing a CS FLC, but seeing as how only 1 RSM lecture is offered, that would make me have an RSM lecture from 5-7, then a CS148 lecture from 7-9.

Is having back to back courses bad? Is it even possible?

    Cheers!

    ———————————————

    yo yo,

When you say possible, do you mean physically or mentally?
Physically, yes! Lectures all start 10 minutes after the hour, giving you 10 minutes to get from one class to another. Depending on the prof and the class, they may even let you out a few minutes earlier than the scheduled end of class.

Now mentally, 2 hour classes back to back could be worse. They could be two 3-hour lectures back to back. From what I’ve experiencd a prof will either give you a break between the two hours or go straight through and let you leave early. I highly, HIGHLY recommend snacks and coffee.Food will get you through lectures .. and life.

Please meet my best friend, Tim Horton, may you both be forever acquainted.

school’s out for summer (not really)

    Hello there,

I would like to know if we are allowed to take half credits that basically last only a semester during the summer session. My plan is to take 2 half credits in the first semester, a total of 1 credit, finish off, and then leave the country mid-summer for good (as an international student)

    Thank you!

    ———————————————

    Dear Ms. International,

Both full year and half courses are offered in the summer session. Though the dates aren’t posted yet for Summer 2011 (that sounds so futuristic, doesn’t it?), last year’s first term began May 10th and ended June 18th, with final exams and tests running until June 25th.

Then you can escape off to Europe and find yourself! (I recommend eating currywurst.)

ou est mon tutorial? (that’s french, right?)

    Dear Ask,

I am a new graduate student at UofT and I am wondering if there is anyway to find out classroom locations for Ger100Y1 L0701 and FSL221Y1 L0401 without being actually registered in the course?

    Best,
    Elizabeth

    ———————————————

    Hi Elizabeth!

The codes for all your classes should be on ROSI. If you click on “view personal Timetable”, a map will show up via Google with the exact address.

Addresses used to be printed in the timetable but maybe they stopped doing that to detract auditors. I’m kind of stuck. The best bet is to contact the German Department and French Department to find out where the classes are.
Sorry I can’t be of help!

course conflicts are the worst conflicts

    Hey,

Just wondering, if I happen to enroll in two courses which conflict with one another, will anything happen (for example, will I have to officially drop one of the two classes)?

As of right now, my understanding is that the only “consequence” of having conflicting classes is that I will have to miss one lecture in order to attend the other however, because I always have the option of going to another lecture section for the same course, I’m not worried about my marks suffering or anything like that. Also, I know that attending lectures for some classes is mandatory and that in some courses you’re graded
on attendance, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the case in my situation. Obviously, this type of thing is probably not advised, but it works out for me.

So, is there any official penalty for having conflicting classes or is it just “not advised?”

    Thanks.

    ———————————————

Hello my ambitious friend. You can totally register in two classes that conflict – the worst thing that will happen is that when you view your timetable on ROSI – a little glaring red “these courses conflict” colour will pop on your schedule to remind you that technically, you shouldn’t schedule two classes at the same time.

If you can however swing registering in two classes at the same damn time and attend all the mandatory lectures, tutorials, practicals, Robarts cram sessions (are you sure you can do all this?), by all means don’t let an anonymous blogger stop you. The world is your oyster! Just clear it with your TA and prof first in case of spontaneous tests, class info and registration issues.

  • bad times,  St. George,  timetable,  transportation

fastest way to get from there to here: go into montage, or a jump cut!

    HI…
I have some transportation woes. I’m from St. George but due to options advisable to me at UTSC that ensure that I graduate(long story) I have to take 3 classes at the UTSC campus. Three out of the five days of the week I have classes at St. George and at UTSC on the same day. I made sure this was a doable plan because there are at least 2.5 hours in between the transfers. However, I as wondering if you knew a quick route between the two campuses that have been passed on by others in my situation or if one of those magic yellow school buses I see around Hart House is a shuttle from St. George to UTSC and visa versa? Any advice will help. Thanks.
