to state or not to state

I was required to withdraw from utm, and during my year off I took a course at a community college. But during that time I was offered full time work, so I took the opportunity as I was planning on saving up. But the opportunity came after the time to drop a class without academic penalty. So now I will have a transcript from this community college with fails because I did not write the exams as I didn’t see a point, withdrew from the winter semester to work. I am planning on applying for reinstatement, will utm know I attended that college if I do not state that I went in my form?

    ———————————————

    Dude!

You have to state that you went to another school on the form. Don’t even consider not stating it on the re-registration form. I don’t know if they’ll know if you deign to lie — or, if we want to sound less awful, omit — but lying to your school just seems like a really dumb idea.

a little late for a late withdrawal

    Helloo,
I’m currently a second year student at UTM and am hoping to get into criminology in April. This semester I all of a sudden thought I was some sort of scholar and took 6 courses!! With a job and other hobbies it was really hard for me to keep up with my courses. I started to panic because I also happen to be on academic probation. Yikes! Anyways, i ended up dropping a course and now I’m pretty sure I’m failing another one, however I can’t afford to because I need to bring up my GPA. Even though the exam for this failing course is a few days away I’m considering doing a late withdrawal. My question is, should I do a LWD to avoid my GPA dropping and just enrol in the same course again next semester? I was planning on doing that considering they also offer it next semester. I know my money is basically lost however sometimes you gotta do watchya gotta do. I just need a little bit of advice. Please and thank you 🙂
    all the best!!

    ———————————————

    Hey hey!

Okay so I checked the calender and apparently the last day for a late withdrawal at UTM was December 3… Had you sent me this message a few weeks ago, I definitely would have recommended doing the dropping-and-retaking thing if you felt really badly about the course. Alas, we are at a standstill.

Right now, the most you can do is study, study, oh, and maybe do a bit more studying — and of course take a few breaks here and there! Since a late withdrawal is no longer an option and you actually will have to finish the course by writing the exam, maybe try taking a few days off and ease away from the time-consuming hobbies to concentrate. The only other thing to do would be deferring your exams but I highly doubt that would be allowed, so study hard and wreck that exam.

    I believe in you! 🙂

this post is too random for a title

    Hi Aska,

So I’m currently a first year student at UTM, in the psych program. I just transferred to UTM this semester after doing quite badly in a different program at a different university.

Anyways, because of my academic history, I’m on academic probation for this year and only allowed to take 3 courses per semester for my first year. So far, at the end of my first semester, I’m getting above 80 is all three courses, and very much enjoying my program.

If everything continues as it is, I will have 3.0 credits with a CGPA of 3.8 – 4.0 at the end of second semester. Now this is where things get confusing for me….

I’m interested in the specialist program in the psych department called “Behavior, genetics and neurobiology”. The requirements of which are on the website and which include CHM110/120, which I am not taking at the moment because I can only take 3 courses. My plan is to take it in the summer. However, this course, while being a UTM course, is only offered at the St George campus over the summer, and I know you have to have a minimum number of credits at your “home” campus before being allowed to take courses at one of the other campuses. So, my question is, will I be able to take it over the summer with only 3.0 credits?

Also, I don’t understand the whole subject PosTs thing. The minimum requirements for the specialist program are 8.0 credits, and a CGPA of 3.0 and some particular courses have to be taken. My question is, if you need a minimum of 8.0 credits, how can you declare it is a subject POST on ROSI after first year? Wouldn’t you have to wait until the end of second year to have enough credits? If that is the case, then why do you have to declare your subject POSts at the end of first year?

Also, if I am allowed to take CHM100/120 during the summer, is it a very difficult course to complete in the compressed time period?

Another question, I’m supposed to be taking a stats course in second year and I’m not sure which one to take: PSY201 or BIO360. Any idea on which prof is better or which one is slightly easier? Math is not my favourite subject so I would prefer to take the one with the better prof that will give me a better chance of getting a good grade…

    Thanks
    Confused First Year UTM student

    ———————————————

    Yo yo!

Nice grades there, bro. I take it you enjoy showcasing them? Don’t worry, I’m sure anyone getting As would be just as shameless. 😉

Now onto your matter: if you only have 3.0 FCE, then no, unfortunately, there will not be any studying at St. George. You need at least 4.0 FCE from UTM to take anything at the St. George campus. So what can you do for now? Well, unfortunately, wait. Or you can stock up on some courses for next semester!

And as for your POSt questions, it is exactly as you read it. I know it sounds weird, but basically from what I’m reading, the Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology program seems to be something you enter after your second year and after you’ve taken all the required courses, which adds up to a good chunk of that required 8.0 FCE. That means that in the mean time, take their listed first and second year course requirements.

But you will still have to declare a POSt. You always do. Why? So that you can register. But not to worry, a lot of people finish their first year, don’t get into the program they want, and just list something they know they can get into as a placeholder. For you, I would recommend perhaps going into a Psych specialist in the mean time.

As for summer school… well, it requires discipline. Lots and lots of discipline. Are you willing to study while your friends go out every single night, enjoying the warm summer nights and lovely patios?? Are you willing to flip through textbooks when there are pools to be swam in, beaches to lay on, and tanning to be had? And what about sitting in a dank classroom when the sunshine creeps into the windows? It’s up to you whether or not it’s “difficult.”

Lastly, the stats question… I guess the best option for you is to do a little research. See who teaches it and consult one of my personal favourites: ratemyprofessor! While not necessarily accurate, you at least get a little bit of insight.

too long but had to read,

what do you mean university is about doing research?!

Ive heard that for UTM commerce you have to re-apply in your second year? How does this work? I also am hearing that a lot of students do not make it into the second year?

Just wondering how many students get admitted to the first year and then how many students go through to the second year?

    ———————————————

    Hey Amanda,

Like I already told you, you apply to Programs of Study at the end of first year. There is no re-applying. Actually, I’m going to quote myself because I love the quoting option on this website and rarely get to use it:

Now what happens at all three campuses of UofT is that at the end of first year, you apply for Programs of Study, those being specialists, majors, or minors in a particular field. So consult the requirement for the program you’d like to be part of. I assume you’re aiming for the Commerce and Finance specialist, meaning you just need to heed the necessary courses (ECO100, MGT120, MAT133 or MAT 135), the grades you need to get in them, and then the minimum CGPA.

Tip: Try hitting the hyperlinks. There’s usually a fifty-fifty chance it’s either an academic link or a cat gif, but it’s always worth it. For example, clicking the Programs of Study link might bring you to an explanation about what they are and how they work.

As for questions about numbers of students? unfortunately, those kinds of things aren’t actually released. If you’re really curious, try sending an email over to the head of the department you want to be part of.

    Cheers!

    ccit is for me

    Hey there,

So, I am in like, a serious dilemma and I hope you can help me. I go to UTM and I am in the Management program in first year, but I am already struggling a lot with the economics and I know I will have a lot of problems with accounting and stuff too, because I am REALLY good in Social Sciences but anything with numbers is just .. no.

Anyways, I want to change to the CCIT program. And I want to drop ECO100Y and MGT120H like, asap. I am taking 4.5 credits, so if I drop the 2 I will have only 3 credits. Then I am planning on taking the two prerequisites for the CCIT program over the summer and then applying for the CCIT Subject Post in the 2nd round when I have 4.0 credits. But then either way I will be applying really late into a super competitive program and even if I get in the courses I need will probably be all full. So what should I do?? I am so confused!

    Thanks

    ———————————————

    Hey hey!

So step one would be to calm down. In first year, everything seems like a struggle.

If you really are being tortured by Management and you’re set on dropping those courses though, I recommend picking up an additional course or two in the second semester if you can, partly to help bump up your GPA (which is always a plus), but also to raise your credit count. While all of the courses in the CCIT program seem to require CCT109H and CCT110H, you can take some other courses in the mean time to contribute to your degree in general.

Now requesting entry into a program in the second round doesn’t necessarily mean it will be full. Logically, a department wouldn’t offer the opportunity for more students to join if they didn’t make room for them, right? So don’t stress over the possibility of not getting in. As long as you have the necessary requirements to the program – CCT109H, CCT110H, and a 2.0 GPA, according to the program description you should be fine. However, if you’re still concerned, double check with your registrar office or the department directly.

But as an aside, heed the refund schedule! Today, October 15, is the last day to get back 75% of your course fee for ECO100Y before the amount drops down to 50%.

    Good luck!

    struggling with stats

    Hi aska,

I’m a first year student at UTM who wants to get into commerce. As I was looking through the degree requirements for the Accounting Specialist, I noticed that there were some statistics classes I needed to take. However, I also noticed that STA220, which I am currently taking, is an exclusion to pretty much all of them.

Is there a way I can just keep STA220 and still be able to work my way around the requirements or do I need to drop it (and only get 75% of my money back…which is a huge loss since I’m paying international fees) and just take one of the requirements? I just don’t know what to do anymore 🙁

    Thanks for your time!

    ———————————————

    Hey there!

So I took a look at the requirements for UTM’s Accounting Specialist program in the course calendar and according to the list, you’re in a bit of a pickle.

I take it that the part that’s troubling you is that second section of the requirements that seems to graciously allow such an array of courses (ECO220, ECO227, and all those lovely STA classes)? Since STA220 is an exclusion to nearly all of those courses, I would recommend speaking to Hugh Gunz, the Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Department of Management at UTM. In the end, the final say about program requirements lies with the department. Hopefully you can work something out in which STA220 counts for 0.5 of what’s needed and then you can take STA261 – the only part of that list that isn’t an exclusion – to finish up that section.

But for now, don’t drop anything and don’t stress out. Try talking to an academic advisor and most definitely talk to the department director.

    Cheers!

    heyy, super helpful humanbeing!

I want to ask one question. Can I transition from one U of T campus to another during my first year?

Also, probably I wouldn’t have asked if I’d known where I can find info about transitioning on U of T website. Could you give me a link if there is one, please 🙂

    Thanks in advance!

    -confused humanbeing

    ———————————————

    Hi there confused!

What you’re asking about is called an internal transfer, and lots of students consider making such a campus-to-campus switch. The application to do as much is on the admissions website here, and you can apply as soon as today to start classes at a new campus next Fall. As to whether you can do that after just one semester, the answer is “no” for a couple of reasons. Enrolment services (the new, sexy title for “admissions”) will only accept transfer students after at least one year at any of the U of T campuses. Much like transferring universities, transferring campuses can only happen for September.

Since admissions officers have only recently looked at your admission application, they want you to show improvement over a full year before looking at it again and re-assessing your acceptance for the various campuses.

If you’re still bent on trying your luck, confused, your best bet is to contact admissions. I hope you’re charming!

    hold me closer Tony Danza

    Hello,

I am currently going into second year at UTM and have just completed first year in a specialist program. I want to expand and live down town this coming year and switch out of my specialist program and into just a major program so that I have more time to take classes at the down town campus and have more time for other classes (I am a dancer therefore need more time for dance training) because currently my program is very time heavy. My question is can I switch out of a specialist to a major at anytime? and when is the time when utm studies can sign up for courses at St. George?

    Thanks!

    ———————————————

    Hey there Tiny Dancer,

So here’s the dealio … well the first one of the bunch!

As a first year, you would not have been in a specialist program yet. At the end of first year, or specifically after 4.0 FCE you choose your Subject POSts. Meaning that just before your second year you declare your specialist/majors/minors.

You can switch your subject POSts in any year during the add times! I just want to warn you that switching from a specialist to a major won’t necessarily give you more time. In order to graduate from U of T you are required to have; 1 Specialist or 2 Majors or 1 Major and 2 Minors. No matter what combination that you take, you will be taking 20.0 FCE in order to graduate, so the same amount of work.

My guuuuuess would be August 16th as the date you can enroll for St.George courses as that is the last enrollment day for UTSG students!

if in doubt, follow Will Smith

Hi, I was just wondering how exactly has the utm residence been lately. Is it as bad as they say if you live on campus? And are people “cold” and unwilling to socialize? I’m considering going there this fall and I’m just nervous on what to expect and how hard it will be to make friends considering I won’t know anyone. Also do parties ever happen? I know university is about studying but I also want it to be a good experience. Thanks in advance for your reply!

    ———————————————

    Heyo,

Everyone, well most outside of anti-social folk, will be in the same situation. We all came to our first year knowing few to no people and scared we were going to be lonely and sad for the next 4 years. If you are social and outgoing, you will find a likewise crowd. Parties happen (especially if you are in res).

Sometimes if you live in a boring res you will just have to make your own fun, and I can gaurentee you will be able to find a partner or two in crime (ok, not real crime … but if real crime, just don’t get caught).

If you don’t plan on living in res, just chat up some peeps in class … this both supports your academics (by having a buddy for notes) and gives you an insider to the fun shiz going on around campus.

If you find yourself with boring people, just try this.

I have also heard a wise monk … or probably my Nan, says that only boring people find themselves bored. Make your own fun and fun people will follow.

sneaky students ruin it for everyone again

    Hi,

UTM (and possibly other campuses) have changed an enrolment policy. In the past, after wait lists ended, you used to be able to enroll in the course on ROSI if a spot opened up (by obnoxiously checking ROSI). Now however, the day that wait lists end is also the last day to add a course for that term. I’m wondering why this is the case because if I’m 20something on the wait list then my chances of getting into the course are slim. Is there any way to work around this? And if I’m a student planning to graduate who needs the course from a required list (but there are alternatives available…not good ones) then what can I do to try to get into the course? I know there used to be and maybe still is a petition to apply for late course enrollment and can the registrar or faculty advisor do anything if a spot opens up past the wait list end date?

    Thanks

    ———————————————

    Hey hey,

So I just called the folks over at UTM and they were actually pretty honest about what was going on. That policy is new to UTM … and from what I understand just UTM. Students were starting to get their knickers in a knock about the free-for-all week. Apparently students would team up with their friends. One would drop the course and tell their friend to add it right away. Students were getting all snotty and saying this wasn’t fair … personally I think it’s a little clever.

Unfortunately, the Dean’s Promise doesn’t apply in this situation. If there were no other options then they place you in the course.

Honestly, there’s no way around it if you have alternate options.

    my heart will go on,

Here’s what the course calendar says on the matter:

Courses at Other U of T Campuses

You must have completed 4.0 credits at U of T Mississauga by the end of the Summer Session to be eligible to enrol in courses at other U of T campuses. If you register, but do not have 4.0 credits, you will be removed from the courses.

    one point for utm

    Hi there,
I’m a second year utm student considering taking some courses at st george next year. I’ve grown used to the UTM Course Timetable Planner and I can’t seem to find anything like it for st george. Could it be the system isn’t as easy?? I’ve looked at the arts and science calendar and the anti-calendar, so I guess I’m just wondering if U of T is yet in the process of making a system for st george that is as easy as utm’s.

    Thanks,
    Tim

    ———————————————

    TIM!

Are you kidding me? I can’t believe UTM has that as a resource. Do you realize that in order to see if a course has space in it, you have to plug it into to rosi one by one at UTSG.

    Let’s compare:
UTM: all the information you could ever need

UTSG you will need all of the following resources:
    Course information

    Course times/locations

To find out if there is space

So, the answer is no … they haven’t thought to combine all of that information into one system.

    This round goes to UTM.

    cheers,
    aska
